The Story Box is a monthly subscription box that sends children’s books. Every month they send out two books that have been curated by a speech-language pathologist.

They have packages appropriate for ages 0-2.5 (which comes with a monthly tip card for parents) and 2.5 -6 (which comes with a parent guide), or a family package for families with kids in both age groups (and comes with a tip card and parent guide).

The Story Box also has a charitable giving program:

A portion of each subscription fee is used to purchase and donate materials to benefit children with disabilities and children from low-income families.  Usually, donations consist of books.  Occasionally, we also donate toys and other education items that can be used to facilitate communication and literacy skills.  Materials are donated to nonprofit organizations, charitable organizations, and professionals that serve our target recipients.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This was the first month I received in a box instead of a mailing envelope, and it was a great unboxing experience! Plus my books arrived in perfect condition - I had some dings on a book in a previous month of this box, so this is a nice upgrade for sure.

The Story Box always sends an info card with a reading challenge. This month is all about verbs!

My son is quite the talker these days, but he gets really excited to learn new words so we talk a lot about synonyms and are starting to help him decipher words that are similar in meaning but not exactly the same -- like "skip" vs "jump". We'll definitely keep the verbs theme in mind this month.

Go! Go! Go! Stop! by Charise Mericle Harper – Value $3.49 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)

I was thrilled to see this book when I opened up the box - my son is a huge fan of cars, trucks, and construction equipment, so I knew he was going to love this one.

The story begins with Little Green, who only knows one word: Go!

Little Green gets a lot of different types of construction equipment to work on a project together, and at first, all is going well.

As predicted - he loved this book - there are so many different machines and he really loved repeating back the names of the various trucks as well as the verbs on this page.

Eventually, because all they do is "go," the construction site evolves into chaos. Then we meet Little Red, who only knows the word (you guessed it) "stop!"

As the weather gets warmer, we're spending more time outside, so I also appreciate that this book is a learning moment for stop & go - important safety words we use every day when walking on the sidewalk and crossing the street.

Ha, I love the design of the barcode on the back cover!

My 2-year-old was enthralled and immediately proclaimed "Read again!" at the end of this; I'm sure we'll be reading this one together for awhile.

Rocket's Mighty Words by Tad Hills - Retail price $7.99

(I couldn't find this version of the book new on Amazon, just an oversized version which was about $10.)

The second book looked promising too - my son loves dogs, and his favorite stuffed animal is named "Doggo."

This book doesn't have a narrative - just a lot of nouns and verbs with cute illustrations of Rocket the dog exploring his world.

This one wasn't as big of a hit, but we still read the whole thing, and we had fun pointing out the words we already know and learning some new ones.

I like to have these books on hand even if they aren't his favorite because I figure once he's really learning how to read on his own, these are fun to work through together. This definitely has some words I don't think we've used much - like "gift" and "jug".

Verdict: The March The Story Box board box was perfect for my son this month. The challenges are always great to have in mind, and the books this month are just awesome for us - my son is 100% all about dogs and trucks pretty much all the time. He is always happy to have new books!

You can buy 2 board books a month for less money, but the thoughtfulness of the challenges and the charitable aspect of The Story Box are both reasons I like this subscription instead of shopping for myself. This month, I thought the curation of the books to go with the theme was spot on, too, since they're very verb heavy. I think this would be a really thoughtful baby shower gift - it's definitely one I'd have been happy to receive as a new parent!
