BarkBox is the most popular dog subscription box. They now offer a Super Chewer Box version for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 86 pounds right now.)

There was an information card detailing some of the items in the box. This month’s theme is “Throwbark Thursday” and you get these stickers instead of a regular information card.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew – Value $5

This is made in the USA and it is pretty much the ultimate single-ingredient, minimally-processed, dog chew. I think these things are gross (no one is asking me to chew on them, though), but dogs love them, and that is the main thing.

Smart n’ Tasty Chicky Twizzies (9”) – Value $3

These are grain, dairy, and soy free and are supposed to be non-stinky (to humans, anyway). Actually, almost all of the ingredients are chicken based, except for a bit of gelatin, natural flavoring, lactic acid, and vitamin E and rosemary (as preservatives). Nyx can’t have chicken due to her IBD but I know a lot of people with dogs that would love these so it will be easy to find a new home for it. (BarkBox’s price for the 9” size is better than some other retailers, too.)

Sodapup Crazy Bounce – Value $12

Nyx only gets to play on the carpet right now (we are having some other parts of the house, with wood floors, painted) so this didn’t bounce much, but she did seem to enjoy just holding it in her mouth. Whatever works, I guess. We are seeing Sodapup toys in a lot of boxes lately and they are pretty durable.

Bark & Co. Cassette Tape – Value $14?

This one is sold out from the BarkBox shop so I had to estimate the value based on what I think is a similar toy. There are a lot of possibilities for this one – Nyx eats canned food I can stuff in here, and the way it opens will allow for her to get all the little bits out. If your dog can have treats or chews, those would be easy to stuff in here as well. Nyx tested this out by chewing on it some last night and it seemed pretty sturdy.

barkbox-super-chewer-april-2017-treats

Barkbox Duck Treats (5.5 oz) – Value $6

These are soft treats and a different size was sent to smaller dogs. The main protein here is duck and these also include potatoes, barley, and oats (but they are free of wheat, corn, and soy). These should be good for a lot of dogs with allergies and food sensitivities. Plus they are made in the USA!

Uptown Pup B’nana & Coco (5.5 oz) – Value $6?

These are a BarkBox exclusive treat but I can’t find them in the BarkBox shop, so I’ve just given them the same value as the other treats since the weight was the same. These have peanut butter and banana in them (and they ACTUALLY do have the banana, as opposed to some other dog treats we received in a different subscription box recently that said “banana” on the label but didn’t actually contain banana…). Like all BarkBox treats, they’re made in the USA.

Here are a few shots of Nyx with the toys from this box. She just wanted to hold the Sodapup toy in her mouth (she does that with tennis balls, too). I am going to try putting some of her food in the cassette tape tonight (although she was interested in chewing it without the food in there, as well).

Verdict: I calculated a value of $46 for this month’s BarkBox Super Chewer Box. That is over the cost of the subscription on a month-to-month basis by more than a few dollars, and keep in mind that I did have to estimate some values, so the total could actually be a bit higher. Once again, I feel that the box contents were a nicely curated mix of toys, treats, and chews. The toys were durable and the treats will work for a lot of dogs with allergies and food sensitivities.

Howloo Ragan and Nyx! Thanks so much for sharing your review on April’s Super Chewer BarkBox – it sounds like the toys and the treats are a hit! Sodapup is an amazing vendor to work with – they are located in Colorado and all their toys are made in the USA, recyclable, and biodegradable! And of course, DURABLE. How pawsome is that?!

You mentioned that Nyx has canned food. Now that it’s starting to get warmer, you should try freezing some of her food in the Mix Breed Tape! This would be a perfect way to cool her down and keep her entertained during the summer heat! 🙂

Thanks again for taking the time to review this month’s Super Chewer box! Give Nyx an extra belly rub fur us today, we ruv her so much!

I just have to say how awesome barkbox is. We signed up in November for the year plan which is the cheapest. I actually didn’t know at the time we were locked in for a year and couldn’t cancel. I just lost my job and tried to cancel and found out it’s a year commitment thing, I emailed them to ask if it was possible to please cancel early as I lost my job unexpectently. They emailed me back so quickly and said it was no problem at all and they canceled it early. My dog absolutely LOVED getting barkbox and as soon as I can afford it again I will absolutely sign up again. I wrote back telling them that and thanking them for letting us out of the year commitment early. She said again it was no problem and that when we do sign back up to let her know and she’ll help give us a discount. Seriously they’re amazing. Absolutely the best customer service I’ve had from anywhere in a long time and their boxes are fabulous. High quality treats and toys. Can’t say enough good things about them. I’ve already told this story to my mom and sister and two friends and my mom has already signed her dog up for one too. Amazing company and absolutely superior customer service. We will absolutely re join when I can afford it again. 🙂

We received the April small dog box yesterday, with a NYC theme! The favorite item from it is a plush covered squeaky ball shaped like the Statue of Liberty’s head, that has a quiet, high-pitched squeak. The treats are always a hit too, and I love that they were both grain-free and made with healthy ingredients.

Heather, we are so yappy that your throwbark Poo York theme was a hit! We always want to make your pup happy and healthy, and would never send anything that we wouldn’t give our own pups. We are so glad the treats were a hit – give your pup an extra one fur us!!

Nyx looks so happy especially in the first photo. Maybe the pet boxes should include picture frames to put ones pets portraits in. Seriously she seems like such a sweetheart!❤️

Do you know if there is a “toy only” option for this box like there is for Bullymake?

Melissa from BarkBox

Howloo Andrea! We do not have a toy only option, apawlogies! But email us at [email protected] and let’s chat about how we can make your BarkBox the best for your pooch! 🙂

I would message them and ask. They are super nice so they might make a special box for you.

I subscribed a few months ago and the only option I remember seeing is for the size of your dog. There definitely wasn’t an obvious choice for “toy only” or even add-on toy per month.

Jessi

There is an add on toy option now.

Andrea

Thank you!!
