Vegan Rob’s Brand Cauliflower Puffs, 1.25 oz – Value $1.75 (buy a case of 8 bags for $14 on Vegan Rob's Brand)
We’ve received Vegan Rob’s Brand items in a few past Vegan Cuts Snack Boxes, but this item is new. I was honestly not looking forward to it because I’ve had some bad broccoli snacks in the past, but these turned out to be delicious – they have a light, crunchy texture that is much more pleasant than rice flour or cornstarch-based puffs.
Dream Water Sleep Powder in “Snoozeberry”, 0.11 oz – Value $2 (buy a 5-pack for $9.99 on Dream Water)
This was hiding under one of the box flaps so I didn’t see it at first. Proceed with caution if you are going to try this product. I have had Dream Water before. It contains melatonin. Some people swear by melatonin but I am one of those people who has very lucid, disturbing dreams after taking melatonin. So, unfortunately, Dream Water is not for me.
Choice Organic Teas in Hibiscus Heart, 1 bag – Value $0.34 (buy a box of 16 bags for $5.39 on Choice Organic Teas)
Hibiscus tea may help lower blood pressure, especially in people with diabetes. It is fine for everyone to drink, though, if a bit tart (most of the Celestial Seasonings Zingers have hibiscus in them). Anyway, this was a good, fruity tea, but I should have taken the bag out sooner – it was pretty strong.
Choice Organic Teas in Simply Detox, 1 bag – Value $0.34 (buy a box of 16 bags for $5.39 on Choice Organic Teas)
This has dandelion root in it. I am skeptical of anything claiming “detox” (that’s what your liver and kidneys are for), but I gave it a try. It is pretty bitter and may not be for everyone.
Pacific Coconut Non-Dairy Beverage, 8.25 fl oz – Value $0.82 (buy a 32-ounce carton for $3.19 on Swanson Health Products)
We get a lot of Pacific non-dairy “milks” in Vegan Cuts. This has a few more calories than the equivalent amount of almond milk. I did my usual, which was to put it in a smoothie, and the smoothie was pretty good, though it obscured the taste of the coconut “milk.”
Nature’s Bakery Strawberry Fig Bar, 2 oz – Value $0.50 (buy a box of 12 for $5.98 on Amazon)
These are a subscription box standby. But luckily, I like them. They have kind of a lot of sugar but also some whole grains, and they have better ingredients than Fig Newtons. For the most part, all the berry-flavored ones taste about the same to me.
Tasty Brand Organic Fruit Snacks, 0.8 oz – Value $1 (buy a case of 30 for $29.95 on Tasty Brand)
We get these from Vegan Cuts on occasion so I’ve had them before. This time, for some reason, they smelled REALLY good to me. Maybe my sinuses are finally clearing up?
Red Plate Foods “Free From” Vegan Granola, 1.9 oz – Value $1.11 (buy 3 12 oz. bags for $20.99 or a 5 lb. bag for $39.99 on Red Plate Foods)
If you are vegan (I’m vegetarian so this is not as much of an issue for me), it can be hard to find granola (a lot of it contains honey). This one does have a lot of small pieces but the flavor is pleasantly sweet and I always like getting snacks with whole grains in them.
I Heart Keenwah Chocolate Puffs, 2.5 oz – Value $3.99 (buy a case of 6 for $18 on I Heart Keenwah)
My husband didn’t like these so much but I think they are an improvement over this brand’s other products, which just about break my teeth to eat. These are basically just plain puffs with a thin chocolate shell, but something about the presence of the shell makes the overall texture of the puff a lot better.
Pearls “Olives to Go” Black Pitted Large California Ripe Olives, 1.2 oz – Value $0.90 (buy a 4-pack for $3.59 at Target)
This was one of the first things I devoured. I have loved olives pretty much the whole time I’ve been eating solid food. These did not have a lot of brine so they would not keep long once you opened them.
Tru Roots Ancient Grain Pasta, 8 oz, penne – Value $4.09
I keep getting Vegan Cuts on Saturday after I’ve already been grocery shopping for the week, so I haven’t tried this yet, but I have put it in the pantry as a backup for if we need a quick dinner one night. It has brown rice, quinoa, corn, and amaranth. I’ve never had amaranth in pasta, but I’ve definitely had some great brown rice pastas and quinoa/corn pastas, so I am optimistic!
Vicia Almond Noir Bar, 1.83 oz – Value $3 (buy a case of 12 for $36 on Vicia)
For something with both almonds and chocolate, this was just OK for me. It tasted about like you’d expect but there really wasn’t any part of it that wowed me. I’m pretty sure I’ve had these before from somewhere, I just can’t remember where.
Fawen Drinkable Soup in Sweet Potato and Red Lentil, 16.9 fl oz – Value $7 (buy a pack of 12 for $84 on Fawen)
This is a marketing misfire right here. “Drinkable” room temperature (or even worse, cold) soup from a carton sounds like a terrible idea to me. Just completely unappetizing. Which is too bad, because this is actually a tasty product. (I poured it in a mug and put it in the microwave before sampling it.) This is kind of pricey compared to the Pacific soups in cartons in a larger size you can get at Whole Foods.
Purely Elizabeth Cranberry Pecan Granola + Puffs Cereal, 1.1 oz – Value $0.96 (buy an 8 oz. box for $6.99 or a case of 6 8 oz. boxes for $38 on Purely Elizabeth)
When you see cereal in a container like this, you automatically think to add hot water. Well, don’t. I’ve done that before with Purely Elizabeth cereals and it is not a pleasant experience. These are cold cereals, meant to be had with milk (or since this is a vegan box, the non-dairy beverage of your choice). This was not a super filling breakfast but would be good in a pinch with a piece of fruit if you don’t have a lot of time.
Here is what the soup looks like, out of the carton.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $27.80 for this month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box. That is one of the best values I’ve seen for this box for awhile. The soup and cauliflower puffs were pleasant surprises (be sure to try everything, even if it doesn’t sound good at first!) and other than the “Detox” tea, there wasn’t really anything I didn’t care for. Overall, this was a great month!
