The Vegan Cuts Beauty Box is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. All of their products are vegan (and they tend to be natural, too). They also typically include a nice mix of full size and sample beauty items. Vegan Cuts also offers a monthly Snack Box and quarterly Makeup Box.

Vegan Cuts sends a single package to subscribers who get both the beauty and snack boxes.  =The beauty items are separated into a little bag. (If you do not get the snack box, I don’t think you get the little bag.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Vegan Cuts Beauty, $22.95 a month, box.

Plantlife Therapeutic Mineral Bath (3 oz, “detox”) – Value $5.95

This is a new brand for me. I’ll be honest, I don’t buy all the “detox” language on the product page, but I do like relaxing baths with bath salts. In addition to sea salt, this has magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) and a few other salts, plus olive oil and a few soothing plant extracts (calendula and chamomile). It was moisturizing and felt good on my muscles after a workout. I am having a hard time describing the scent and the company is kind of secretive about what the specific essential oils in this are. I would definitely be interested in trying some other products from this brand, though. They have a pretty full line of bath and body care products as well as essential oils.

Hempz Fresh Coconut and Watermelon Herbal Body Moisturizer (2.25 fl oz) – Value $3.04 (full size is 17 fl oz for $23)

I’ll be honest, at first, I wasn’t super excited about this because Hempz is a mainstay in Ulta GWPs and I have SO MANY bottles of it. But then I saw the scent: “fresh coconut and watermelon.” And I have definitely not tried that before. It smells really, really good. More body products should be watermelon-scented. This performs well as a body lotion (non-greasy, absorbs nicely). Also, it is affordable if you want the full size.

Modicum Essential Cleanser (0.34 fl oz) – Value $9.52 (full size is $28 for 30 mL or about 1 fl oz)

This cleanser is quite gentle (my skin has been dry and irritated lately so that is important) and has lots of moisturizing ingredients (argan oil, avocado oil, squalane, etc.). It is full of plant extracts that will have antioxidant properties (like black seed oil) and also includes some anti-acne ingredients (MSM, a source of sulfur, and willow bark extract, a source of salicylic acid). I am finding this wonderfully balancing for my skin right now as the weather transitions. It doesn’t lather as much as you might expect since it is sulfate free.

Modicum Essential Exfoliant (0.34 oz) – Value $6.12 (full size is $18 for 30 mL, or 1 fl oz)

This was interesting. The only two ingredients are MSM (a source of sulfur, which can be good for acne-prone skin) and aloe. I tend to prefer strong, physical exfoliation, whereas this is something you mix into a paste, for example, by adding to the cleanser (although the cleanser already has aloe and MSM in it…). If you are looking for a gentle exfoliant, this may work for you, but I like my scrubs to be a little harsher and/or more abrasive (this was super gentle by my standards). Still, it was nice to sample multiple items from a skincare line that was new to me and to get enough of each to try a few times.

Lakur Enhanced Colour by Londontown in “Brill-Ant” (0.4 fl oz) – Value $16

This looks silver but has a hint of rose in it – it is a really pretty color. It is also vegan and “9 free” (I understand “4 free” and “5 free” but am not sure about the 9). I haven’t gotten a chance to put this on my nails yet but it is supposed to be infused with hydrating and strengthening compounds and that is definitely something I need right now since my nails are in terrible shape. This one is moving to next up in the rotation.

Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm (0.5 fl oz) – Value $3.99

I like this. I like to use really thick balms in squeeze tubes like this right before bed so this is in my nightstand. It is clear and thick and you do need to rub your lips together a bit to get the coconut oil in it nice and melted. I don’t think it has a strong scent.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $44.62 for this month’s Vegan Cuts Beauty Box. That is pretty close to last month’s value and is well over the cost of the subscription. I thought the items this month were nice in that they can be used by pretty much everyone, regardless of skin color or hair type or anything along those lines. I also felt the value was better distributed among the items than in some other months. And, it was nice to see a few more luxe items (like the Modicum cleanser) alongside some affordable, easy-to-find choices from Hempz and Shea Moisture.

What do you think of the March 2017 Vegan Cuts Beauty Box?

I think VeganCuts beauty is so underrated. It’s a really nice sub with a good variety of items, and it’s cruelty free!

That said, there were a couple of misses in this box. Loved the nail polish, cleanser duo, and lip balm. I don’t have a bathtub – a lot of people in apartments only have showers, so bath products that are strictly for the bath are always a miss for me. And that lotion. I love Hempz, and think their body lotion is great. It’s just me…I really don’t like watermelon, and this has a strong watermelon scent. I don’t like any melons. I’m probably the only one who doesn’t like this Hempz. If it was just about any other scent, it would be great. I hoped the coconut would be more powerful, but no, it’s the melon that is. And yet, I am still using this product because it’s a good lotion.

So VeganCuts, I still love you and look forward to my next box. Just please don’t send me any melon or cinnamon scents and we’ll be good 🙂

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the Hemp lotion and the nail polish!! For me, the lotion smelled great and was not greasy at all. Anyone who knows me knows that I LOATHE greasy hands. I was surprised by this lotion. I have seen it in stores but never even thought about trying it. After receiving it in this box I went to Ulta the next day and bought 3 more mini lotions of different scents. Loved it. 🙂 My thirteen year old daughter loved it also LOL I had to buy her one or she was going to take mine! 😀
I usually turn my nose up to nail polishes in boxes,…but this one is GORGEOUS!!! I cannot express enough how truly beautiful this color is. I am super grateful to have received it!!

I am so excited to have received my 4th Londontown nail polish this month (I received one in the February Yuzen box, another in the March Allure box, and my friend gave me hers that she got in Allure, and it was in a different color than what I received!)! I’m currently wearing the polish that came in the Vegan Cuts box, and it’s beautiful! I first wore the polish from Yuzen last month, and it truly is chip resistant. This brand is one of the best (or maybe the best) I’ve ever tried. It has awesome staying power, the colors are true to what you see in the bottle, and they go on very smoothly.

I was also happy to get another set of the Modicum cleanser & exfoliant (got another set in March’s Goodbeing box), and I’m so happy to be able to try out Shea Moisture’s lip balm. I love how they continue to come out with new products!

The nail polish color is to die for!!!! The Therapeudic mineral bath is AMAZEBALLS. I normally don’t like adding anything to my baths…but this not only smelled so great…I left the bath feeling clean, refreshed and my skin was so soft. I will be buying this brand again!!!

However, the lip balm was RANCID like the coconut oil went bad. The HEMPZ lotion did smell great but left a greasy and then sticky residue on my hands after.

I wonder if it was something else in the lip balm that tasted rancid or the balm was old. Coconut oil is known for how shelf stable it is.

Follow up….Vegan Cuts is sending me a whole NEW BOX because of the balm 🙂

That’s awesome! I had a little snafu with last month’s box… it arrived completely beat up with only one product in it. It looked like it had gotten caught in a machine, and USPS just taped it up again. Vegans Cuts was gracious enough to send me a whole new box, and they were super apologetic, which I thought was so nice since it wasn’t their fault at all.

Ragan

Yeah, I didn’t use the lotion on my hands. I used it on my legs and then I put sweatpants on, so I can see how we might have had different opinions there.

It is weird that your balm went rancid. I have had the same 2 pound tub of coconut oil in my kitchen for over a year and it is fine. But, I suppose different heat conditions could be responsible, especially with no preservatives and such.

Laura

I liked this box….
PROS: The Modicum is a really nice cleanser especially with the exfoliant added in. The nail polish color is to die for!!!! The Therapeudic mineral bath is AMAZEBALLS. I normally don’t like adding anything to my baths…but this not only smelled so great…I left the bath feeling clean, refreshed and my skin was so soft. I will be buying this brand again!!!

CONS: The Shea Moisture lip balm was RANCID. I contacted Vegan Cuts and they offered to send me a whole NEW box! I am hoping the new balm will taste better. I don’t know if you’ve ever tasted rancid coconut oil, but it is not a nice taste.

My other complaint is with the HEMPZ lotion. While I love the scent (amazing!!!!)…..the after residue is sticky and similar to that of less expensive lotions. I had to wash my hands after applying. Fortunately my daughter likes it….so it’s getting some use.

Overall……the other products made up for the not so great ones. I’m happy with Vegan Cuts for sending me a new box…and hoping the lip balm will taste good this time!

I love Plantlife! I bought their “Stress 3 pack” of essential oils to try out in my bedroom diffuser at night and loved them so much I came back and bought their HUGE sets of oils during a Christmas deal. (FYI my sometimes over-excited and ADD dog also seems to really chill out with those oils too!) And I’m absolutely in love with their vanilla orange scented hand soaps and body wash. Definitely check out their “factory seconds” section of the website…I got awesome deals on full size scrubs and they also have a great “samples” section to try out different soap scents or products.

Ragan

Thanks, I didn’t see the “factory seconds” section.

I’m a bit afraid to use essential oils in the bedroom (I have a diffuser). Sneaky (one of my cats) spends most of her day there and she has asthma and I am trying to keep it scent free because she has been having issues lately.

But I am all about scrubs. I go through them like crazy.

Go to “Sales and Deals” and then “Factory Seconds” from the drop down menus across the top of the page. Looks like there is a lavendar scrub there now for $5.95 (regularly $19.95). The warning is that the container might be damaged or have oil on it. I got a lavender and a lemongrass scrub at those prices a few months ago and they seemed in good condition to me and full (and the tubs are rather big!) I just got around to using the lavender one and I’m liking it…but it can also leave a greasy residue if you don’t rinse it off well (probably all the oils).
