This month’s box is all about spice!

Robb-vices-march-2017-liquor

Ancho Reyes Ancho Chile Liqueur (750 ml.)- $34.99

This month’s box was absolutely packed full of items, but this large bottle of chile liqueur caught my eye right away. I’ve never tried chile liqueur before, but my mind immediately started racing with possibilities and ideas for how to use it. Margaritas! Frozen daiquiris! Robb Vices included a couple of their own ideas and cocktail recipes, as well as some small bottles of liquor to aid in the cocktail making:

Robb-vices-march-2017-vodka

Robb-vices-march-2017-rum

Robb-vices-march-2017-whiskey

Reyka Icelandic Vodka (50 ml.)- $3.99

Flor de Caña Gran Reserva (50 ml.)- $3.99

Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey (50 ml.)- $3.29

These little mini bottles include: Reyka Icelandic Vodka, Flor de Caña 7 Year Old Gran Reserva Rum, and Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey.

I used the Flor de Caña 7 Year Old Gran Reserva Rum and Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur to make an Ancho Daiquiri, one of the suggested drinks:

In addition to the rum and chile liqueur, this recipe utilizes lime juice and Royal Rose Three Chile Syrup, which was also included in this box (and is showcased further down in the review). This cocktail was so interesting! It was tangy, sweet, smoky, and a little spicy. I think this would be an absolutely perfect cocktail for Cinqo de Mayo! (Bring on the chips and salsa!)

Robb-vices-march-2017-puffs

Serious Cheesy Puffs Sriracha Cheddar (3 oz.)- $5.67

Next up, I sampled these cheddar corn puffs. Here’s a close up of them:

Robb-vices-march-2017-puffs-detail

I love sriracha, so these puffs are right up my alley! I never think of sriracha as being super spicy, but these puffs pack a healthy punch of heat. The flavor is great, and I love that these are made without genetically modified ingredients. I have a feeling that they won’t last long in my house.

Robb-vices-march-2017-elixir

No. 5 NW Elixirs Hott Jolokia Ghost Pepper (9 oz.)- $12

A spicy box wouldn’t be complete without some hot sauce, so Robb Vices included this ghost pepper elixir. Interestingly, this sauce is made by aging ghost peppers in rum barrels from Portland’s Bull Run Distillery. The aging process helps this sauce absorb the flavor of the rum and gives it an island vibe. It’s really tasty… and VERY spicy! I love that there’s a sweetness that helps balance out the spice.

Robb-vices-march-2017-hotsauce

Hank Sauce Cilanktro Hot Sauce (8 oz.)- $14

… and here’s another hot sauce! This one is made with fresh cilantro, which adds a surprising freshness to the flavor. Whereas the NW Elixirs hot sauce is sweet and spicy, I’d describe this one as fresh and tangy. Cilanktro can be used on salads, over vegetables, and as a marinade for shrimp and fish. I’m a big fan of this sauce— I tried adding it to guacamole, and I really enjoyed how it amped up the flavor.

Robb-vices-march-2017-syrup

Royal Rose Three Chile Simple Syrup (8 oz.)- $11.50

I’ve tried a number of Royal Rose Syrups before, but this one is new to me. It’s made with fresh poblanos, jalapeños, and dried ancho chiles, and it’s sweet, spicy, and smoky. I used it to make the Ancho Daiquiri (featured above), and I can’t wait to experiment with it and try it in some other cocktails!

Robb-vices-march-2017-jerky

Righteous Felon Habanero Escobar Beef Jerky (2 oz.)- $9.99

Righteous Felon is another brand I know and like, and I’ve actually had this jerky before. I’m a fan of spicy jerky, and this one is great. There’s definitely a good bit of heat to it, but the spice is balanced out with just enough sweetness. The heat does build as you eat it, though.

Robb-vices-march-2017-jerky-detail

Robb-vices-march-2017-chocolate

Little Bird Dark Chocolate Fire Bark with Crushed Candied Jalapeños (1.5 oz.)- $6.99

Speaking of spice that builds, this chocolate is not for the weak at heart! I thought that “candied jalapeno” might mean that this chocolate has a mellow, sweet jalapeño flavor, but the spice level is higher than I anticipated.

Robb-vices-march-2017-chocolate-detail

It’s delicious, but I had to take a break after I ate my first piece in order to let the fire extinguish a little before going back for piece number two. Even though it’s spicy, there’s a nice balance of flavor— I get a little sweetness, a little saltiness, and a nice creaminess from the chocolate.

Robb-vices-march-2017-peppers

Melissa’s Dried Oaxaca Chiles (1 oz.)- $5.83

The last two items in this box are a couple of dried chiles from Melissa’s.

Robb-vices-march-2017-peppers-detail

The first one is a large jar of dried oaxaca chiles, and Robb Vices included a recipe for Oaxaca Chile-Rubbed Bone-In Rib Eye Steaks.

Robb-vices-march-2017-ghost

Melissa’s Ghost Peppers (.25 oz)- $3.93

The next dried chile, Melissa’s Ghost Peppers, kicks up the spice level a little bit. The booklet actually comes with the following warning: “Ghost peppers are extremely hot. Handle with care.”

Robb-vices-march-2017-ghost-detail

Robb Vices recommends using these peppers to make Ghost Pepper Veggie Soup with Kale. I think I’ll give the soup a try, but I may try and pick up some disposable gloves before I try handling these puppies!

Verdict: I had a lot of fun with this box, and I enjoyed trying so many different spicy products! Robb Vices has a knack for curating boxes that almost always feel unique and surprising, and this box is no exception. The retail value of the items in this month’s box comes to just over $116. As far as Robb Vices Boxes go, that’s on the lower end of what I’ve come to expect, but it’s still well above the subscription cost, so I’m pleased!

This box would make the perfect gift for my hubby, but they are not accepting customers from Kentucky!? I wonder why that is?

There’s always an issue to mailing alcohol there especially since there are so many dry counties. I think they just don’t want to deal with the hassle.

I loved this months box😍 Loved it. Robb Vices is one of my 5 boxes that I will never ever cancel no matter what. They are an amazing company and I adore that it’s family owned and a family as a company.

Hi Courtney, can I ask what the other 4 boxes you won’t give up are? I have gone through so many the past couple of years and as of yesterday am now just Robb Vices, PSLE and FFF. I may add back PS monthly and Adidas, but I only need so many tennis shoes. Thanks! Had Allure until yesterday, but still will do occasional Target and RZ BOX.

Hi Chris, my apologies for the late response, I didn’t turn on notifications. My top 5, in no specific order, are BoxyCharm, PopSugar Must Have, Robb Vices, Sephora Play, and Avenue A. I also get ones like Target and Walmart, but those don’t count and I would stop getting them if I had to. I get the RZ also, but I’d drop that as well in a heart beat. I subscribe to a few more but there are only 5 that I will always make sure I am getting it, and that’s the 5 listed above.

I am jealous of this box. I love spice! I think this box is on my wish list for the future because I’m always coveting this sub!

I love Robb Vices! My favorite box all month. March was packed with tasty surprises. My husband and I have had a great week sampling all the treats, mixing cocktails and enjoying new recipe spices. A perfect selection!

Mamo

I was a little disappointed this month. I was hoping it would be St Patricks day themed! Also I was a little surprised that the value was so low considering they have kinda set the bar for being a higher value box.

Hi Mamo! Your comment reminded me to mention that the founder of Robb Vices dropped into the MSA forum and mentioned that April’s box will be the highest value yet! 🙂 If anyone would like to read the full comment, it can be found here about 1/2 way down the page: http://forum.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/discussion/4569/march-robb-vices-spoilers/p5

Sammee

Thanks so much for posting this. This was the last month of my current subscription and I’ve been going back and forth about whether to renew as a part of me was convinced that they would come out with their best month yet as soon as I did :-). Looks like I might have been right. I’ll probably switch to M2M and see what happens.

Susan

I have been debating a subscription for this box, but I have waited too long. I live in KY and we are on the list of closed subscriptions 😕 I am guessing it has to do with the state’s ban on alcohol shipments from outside the state. The bourbon lobby is real here.

I hate spicy foods so this box was a huge fail for me. I’ve been able to give some of it away but for the most part I haven’t had any fun with it. By curating a box that has nothing but consumables that all revolve around one extreme flavor, it shuts out everyone who either doesn’t like it or can’t eat it.

Janet

This looks great! I’d love to get this box but I don’t think the mailroom at work would appreciate the extra work of having to distribute heavy non-work related packages to people.

Reply ButtonReply

Lia

Since they ship FedEx, when you get the notice you have a package coming, you can go in and have it held at a FedEx location. That is what I do most months when I can’t be home for delivery. It is a nice option so you can still get the box. 😊

That looks awesome! I would love to sub this box, but it’s a little out of my price range. Maybe someday in the future.

Sharon

I hope everyone that gets this likes spicy!! I personally do not, so this would be a complete bust for me!
