The Youtuber who designed the first palette is Evon Wahab – she made video tutorials for using this palette (now on Deck of Scarlet’s Facebook page.)

Now, time to look at this palette!

The top has two separate magnetic flap closures, so you can keep one side covered if you like.

The back side of the palette’s packaging (it came in a paper sleeve) has a description of the palette and the ideas behind it, as well as the ingredients for each pan inside.

Evon describes this palette saying she picked “super wearable, flirty shades.” Personally, that’s not how I’d describe this palette, however, I have to say after playing with it a little, I think the shades are more wearable than I initially thought and when you incorporate the whole palette in versatile ways you can get a lot of different looks. As far as flirty goes, well, the coral (and green) colors can definitely be funky and playful and it’s easy to smoke out your look a little with the green and brown shades.

To summarize, I think many people may have opened this palette and been a little intimidated or at least feeling somewhat challenged to push their makeup comfort zone boundaries.

The palette includes two lip glosses (coral kisses, almond), three eyeshadows (fudge, sunshine, mermaid), a highlighter (halo) and a bronzer (sandstorm). In December, the palette included a space to hold an eye or lip liner, but this month they cut down the packaging and that’s not included.

The pigmentation of all of these products was really good! The formulas were a little powdery and I experienced some fallout, but it wasn’t too bad. The lip glosses were really goopy, though, so I think the formula for those would make me concerned about tossing the palette in my purse or traveling anywhere where it may be warmer than room temp with them. I can see them melting and dripping everywhere.

Deck-of-scarlet-march-2017-items5

The eyeliner this month is a pretty, shimmery green called “chameleon.”  I don’t wear much green on my eyes but I like this color! The formula was nicely pigmented and creamy, too.

Deck-of-scarlet-march-2017-items7

The lip liner is a pretty, darker nude shade called “cake pop” that matches the Almond lip gloss shade. This formula was nice – pigmented, smooth, and dry enough to lock down my lipstick but no so dry to be hard on my lips.

Good to know: both the lip and the eyeliner have a built in sharpener on the end.

Here is everything swatched! (Eyeshadows on top, highlighter/bronzer, lip glosses, and then lip and eye liner)

Deck-of-scarlet-march-2017-items9

Here’s my own look (more pictures below). I decided to play around with it myself and figure out a look that was a little more day-to-day than the tutorial looks they show. I’m wearing the Almond shade on my lips, layered over the lip liner, and you can see a better look at the shadows below.

For this look, I used the highlighter for all over my lid. This helped to tone down the orange eyeshadow a little as well as offer a more neutral shimmer shade to blend into at my inner lid. Next I pat the orange shade on the center of my lid. I blended the green shade into my crease and used the brown shade to blend a small “v” shape to define my outer lid. Lastly, I used the eyeliner on my top lid and the outer half of my lower lid. One thing Evon did in one of her looks is use the coral lip gloss on her lid, topping and setting it with the coral eyeshadow – this really makes the coral color pop! I thought that was a cool technique and showed versatility and interesting ideas with the glosses.

Verdict: I am pleased with the formulas in this palette and have had fun playing around with it! I know they value everything at $80, but to me I’m looking more at what I get for the $30 price, and for that I’m happy with what I got.

The colors were not good for me at all. I asked them to cancel and received another order, I paid about $10.00 shipping and returned it. A very few days later I received ANOTHER order, and just returned it unopened. I have tried numerous times to contact them and the phone number provided does not work…………I have been charged $71.44 and cannot get hold of anyone to ask about a refund. I wrote a letter, still no response. I am definitely not a happy customer!!!

I am not very impressed with my pallet . I have also tried to stop the subscription and it failed for some reason now I am forced to contact my credit card company and stop yet another payment for a second pallet that I didn’t order to start with and at 39.00 plus shipping I am so not happy …..but since every effort to stop this order have failed I have no choice but to contact them to stop this crap from coming unwelcomed!

So do you pay $30 for each month or is it $30 every other month and you get a palette each month?

Carla

I don’t mind paying $30 every month for a complete palette. I love make up and this months palette is really cool. I promptly tried it and my husband said this was his favorite look of all.

Wow, that makeup looks great on you! I love how the green eyeliner makes your blue eyes pop with the bronze/brown colors on the lid. And the 90s brown colored lips are making a comeback! That shade looks perfect on you too! You always know how to apply the colors well enough to fit your skin tone and make them look flattering cause when I first saw the palette, I was like ugh, I could never wear those! But then seeing how you applied it, it makes it look totally doable.

What mascara are you using in your look? Your eyelashes are AMAZING!

The make-up looks good on you. 👍🏼 If we signed up today, would this be our first palette?

Great review! I would be so intimidated by this palette but you made it seem very approachable for novices like me. I don’t wear much makeup except for very simple shadow techniques with neutrals. Your example is a look I would feel very comfortable wearing. Would love to see a mini video tutorial sometime!

Btw, Hayley, I love your reviews – you always do an excellent job of highlighting the products (clothing, makeup, baby toys, just about anything!)

I know, I totally agree. I did not like the palette when I first saw it cause this colors intimidate me too! But she makes it look easy. I agree, video tutorials would be cool! I love her reviews

I REALLY like this sub and am looking forward to getting this!

Never in a million years would I have tried a brown based blusher like in the previous palettes but they really look good.

I depotted my lippies because those I like to have with me all the time, and I have found that once I set this makeup I get 10 hrs wear with no touch ups.

Shadow dust doesn’t bother me because I’ve had plenty of luxury shadows that throw product too. Sometimes it’s simply the formulation and trying to pick up too much product all at once.

For $15 per month it’s still less than I was spending on drugstore brands each month-& half of those I never wear!

I’m happy and I love the orange/coral look for spring. I’m ready!

Geena

Isn’t it $15/month for a palette every 2 months though? For that I’d rather just spend the extra $15-$20 on a much bigger palette at Sephora or Ulta and buy some other nice product in a couple more months.

Reply ButtonReply

Trisha

$30 charged to my card every other month equals $15 per month correct?

I continue to buy the seasonal releases from Tom Ford, Chanel & Kat Von D (mostly) but I absolutely dabble in drug store lines too. Some are great & some just don’t work.

You should buy whatever feels worthwhile to YOU, forget about others opinions. I figure it’s my hard earned cash and I’ll spend it like I want.

I’m just bored with MATTE lippies in dark colors which every sub I get has dumped me with this past year. I want more gloss or traditional cream lip products and these guys deliver.

I’m gonna copy Hayley’s look exactly because that color combo for me is perfect! Super flattering on light skin tone- love it!

Rosemary

I have been impressed with every palette. I know some people are complaining about the price, but if you enjoy being nudged out of your comfort zone, this is a fun way to do it for $30.

This is the first time i have seen this subscription and I really like it. Its an awesome concept. I will be keeping my eye on this subscription for sure. I really like the makeup look you created. I am very curious what the recommended day and night makeup looks are for this palette and i guess i can go to their website to find that out and see pics. I wonder if the subscription box comes with the day/night instruction tutorial or u have to go to youtube/website to find that info out?

Reply ButtonReply

Haley Faye

Stephanie, it’d be great if the box came with the day/night looks, or even just cards showing what the looks are directing you to their site for tutorials. Short answer: yes, you can go to their facebook and youtube to see their tutorials.

Reply ButtonReply

Stephanie

Oh wow- I can’t believe the box doesnt include how to create the intended day/night looks. I went to website and youtube and had trouble finding the correct tutorials 🙁 there are so many youtube videos and reviews on this product that i never did find the “endorsed” one even though i started from the website. I didnt go to their facebook. I dont think facebook should be the only way to find the tutorial. For $30 and the intention of the box, they really should include this. Very inconvenient that they dont. I was considering a future subscription but wont if i cant even find the day/night look and how to create it.

Tracey

I wouldn’t call those “super wearable” either. Although looking at the more muted looks managed in the pics, I agree its much more wearable than at first glance if you play with it a bit. I would still call them out of my comfort zone, though.

I do like how the palette is done, and the style. How do the lipsticks last in a palette like that?

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

Agree. If you blend the orange and the green until you can’t even see that the shadows are orange and green, what’s the point?

Tired of powdery shadow with fallout. For this price, there shouldn’t be fallout.

Reply ButtonReply

Geena

Exactly – THREE shadows in a $30 palette shouldn’t questionably need a primer. Especially not when paired with goopy glosses… :-/

Marion

The packaging this month is really pretty.
