The Story Box is a monthly subscription box that sends children’s books. Every month they send out two books that have been curated by a speech-language pathologist.

They have packages appropriate for ages 0-2.5 (which comes with a monthly tip card for parents) and 2.5 -6 (which comes with a parent guide), or a family package for families with kids in both age groups (and comes with a tip card and parent guide).

The Story Box also has a charitable giving program:

A portion of each subscription fee is used to purchase and donate materials to benefit children with disabilities and children from low-income families.  Usually, donations consist of books.  Occasionally, we also donate toys and other education items that can be used to facilitate communication and literacy skills.  Materials are donated to nonprofit organizations, charitable organizations, and professionals that serve our target recipients.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Story Box always sends an info card with a reading challenge. This month, they encourage you to use 'expansions' when interacting with books and reading to your kids. My son is 21 months and is picking up new words crazy fast right now, so this is super fun! If he says "truck" for example, we'll say "yellow truck" or "yellow dump truck" and he tries to repeat it.

The Itsy Bitsy Snowman – Value $2.99 on Amazon (retail price $5.99)

Our first book this month is a fun winter story with cute illustrations, written to the tune of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider." We actually don't own any singalong books, so I thought this was a cute idea!

We read this a couple times right away, both just reading it and singing it. My son already likes to try to sing along to "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" so he was pretty entertained by the new lyrics! This will be a fun book to keep in our stash, though he didn't immediately return to it.

I'll Never Let You Go by Smriti Prasadam-Halls and Alison Brown – Value $5.64 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)

This book is so sweet! It features different parent and child animal pairs on each page, with a cute rhyming story about the ways that parents support their children through different adventures emotions:

We both loved this book, and read it about 5 times in a row before bed. I like that it features some animals that my son wasn't already familiar with, like alligators and koala bears, so we had fun reading the story as well as talking about the names for those animals and the sounds they make.

This book arrived a little scuffed up in the top corner on the back cover. Toddlers wear pretty hard on board books anyway (at least my son does), so it's not a huge deal for me since damage is somewhat inevitable, but it was a bit of a bummer.

Verdict: The January The Story Box board box had two fun books that my toddler enjoyed. The retail prices are just a bit lower than the $14.99 price of the box (which does include free shipping), but board books are almost always quick to get discounted, so both of these are available somewhat cheaper to buy individually. My son loves books and we enjoy reading new ones together, so I love the idea of this subscription to help keep our collection fresh. I'm also personally trying to support more businesses with charitable giving programs when I can, so I love that they are able to donate books to kids with disabilities and low-income families, and I do include that in the total value every month because it's important to me.
