So-Choix-January-2017-Box

So Choix is a new way to try and buy makeup where we bring the makeup counter to you!” So Choix is a makeup sampling subscription service that sends you hand-made samples of brand name, beauty counter products. Each month, subscribers have the options to choose all or a few of their beauty samples or to be totally surprised.

So-Choix-January-2017-bxo2

All the samples they send are hand-made from authentic full-size products and brand new sample containers. They use high hygiene standards and never even touch the product itself. This is a process which allows them to send completely uncontaminated products to you, which I really appreciate considering that the lipsticks and products sitting on some stores’ shelves have been touched and poked by hundreds of other people.

You can click here to learn more about how they make their samples.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Origins A Perfect World Age Defense Moisturizer with White Tea with SPF 25 – Full-size value $43

I’ve never tried any of Origin’s skincare except for a mask or two, so I was interested in seeing what a moisturizer from them is like. I love that this one has SPF! I like the formula alright – it definitely absorbs well. I just prefer super heavy duty moisturizers, especially in winter, so I don’t think I’ll be buying the full size.

NARS Dual-Intensity Blush, Adoration – Full-size value $45

I love the shimmer and glow of this blush! The “dual-intensity” is supposed to come from being usable dry or wet, but I personally just prefer it dry. The pigmentation is great dry and the lighter shade makes a great highlighter. Wet, I had to be really careful about applying with a light hand. So Choix also included a little cheek brush for me to use.

Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick, Witchy – Full-size value $21

I haven’t yet tried Smashbox’s new Be Legendary lipstick, and I thought this “witchy” shade was really pretty. The formula is hydrating and the pigment is good, though with the brush So Choix included it went on a little patchy. I think application with the actual lipstick would be better.

So-Choix-January-2017-items4

Tarte Tartiest Glossy Lip Paint, Poison – Full-size value $20

For a gloss, this stuff has incredible pigmentation! This color went on completely opaque, wasn’t sticky at all, and felt good on my lips. This (gorgeous) vampy color wore for a long time, too. When I took it off, it actually sort of stained my lips a little, but nothing really noticeable.

Alterna Caviar 10-in-1 Complete Correction Hair Cream – Full-size value $25

I was curious about trying a hair sample from So Choix, and I’m actually pretty happy with this cream! It’s a leave-in product that has a lot of benefits: moisture, shine, smoothness, softness, UV and heat protection, manageability, strength, light hold, and anti-breakage. I only got one use out of this, but I could tell that it made a small difference in my hair just from using it once – I’m definitely adding the full size to my wish list.

Here are swatches of the Tarte lip gloss, Smashbox lipstick, and both colors of the Nars dual intensity blush.

Also, this month I redeemed 500 points for a So Choix Pod Palette, that has 5 spaces with magnets for you to put your little pan samples until you’ve used them up!

So-Choix-January-2017-items8

It’s simple but so handy.

So-Choix-January-2017-items9

Here, I’m wearing the blush (the darker pink as blush and the pale pink as highlighter on my cheekbones and inner eye) and the Smashbox lipstick (left) and the Tarte lip gloss (right). I really love both lip colors! The Smashbox lipstick is just right with my complexion and is a very wearable shade. The Tarte lip gloss is vampy and fabulous, and I’ve been looking for a dark purple like this that has the right undertones for me all winter.

Verdict: I had a lot of fun with my January So Choix box. Thanks to So Choix, I’ve been able to try so many brands that are new to me and/or aren’t sold anywhere convenient near me. I love that they often have new releases, too, so I can keep up to date on the newest beauty trends. It’s hard to do an exact cost-breakdown for this box because of the hand-made samples, but being able to try so many different brand name cosmetics and skincare products plus getting 250 points ($5 store credit) every month feels fun and worth it to me, especially considering my own lifestyle (toddler mom, living far from any kind of access to any of these).

What do you think about So Choix? Have you tried their service before?

The Alterna Caviar 10-in-1 Complete Correction Hair Cream is my everything! I think it keeps my hair in check between hair washings.

I’m really glad to see a review about So Choix. I looked into this sub about a month ago or so ago, pretty thoroughly, but I can’t pull the trigger. I love the idea of it, that you can try all the designer brands. The thing that I don’t like about it, is that you can only use your monetary credit up to $20 worth of their products, which hardly brings any credit to the picture… since we are talking about expensive, awesome stuff! So no thanks, I’ll use Sephora and Ulta and get points that way 🙁 and receive bonus samples once in a while. I’m sad, because except for that, it could have been a lot of fun!
I’m glad to see the review because I was very curious how they packaged up the samples 🙂

I joined about a month ago and I’m going to cancel. I chose a shampoo and hair mask the samples were so small they did not cover even a third of my shoulder length hair. They say you get applicators with products I ordered a powder foundation and it was so small came with no sponge another waste of money.
I ordered two full size products Monday and they still have not been shipped. I have emailed them three times the first being a week ago and have not gotten a reply email. I just emailed them asking to cancel my order and my membership so let’s see if they reply to that.
I wish I never joined!

I canceled this subscription after 1 month. I didn’t get any tools to use with my samples. I received samples that I still can’t use because my makeup brushes won’t fit in the small containers they come in.

Of all the sub boxes Ive tried this last year, I think this is my favorite. Ive unsubscribed and resubscribed multiple times to sephora and birchbox and am currently off both bc of product overload but still have my SoChoix bc its fabulous!! So easy to pause and just order what you want WHEN you want it….NO OTHER SUB DOES THIS!!!, customer service is over top amazing, and shipping is super fast. Yeah, samples are small…think equivalent to the larger foil packets, but im not an instagram beauty blogger full face makeup artist type of person, and i have more than enough full size stuff than I care to own. This is perrrrrrffffeeecccttt for me when I want to try a new look with a glittery shadow or different treding product, get ready for a formal event without purchasing full size products i wont use again, or travel light but still spruce up my look at the airport. The samples last me about 5 uses (AGAIN, im not a heavy user) so no clutter in my makeup bag or vanity!!!

I would say if you try to compare this to other subs, you might be disappointed. I dont think its good for building up a stash of makeup or hoarding, so you wont be getting the same “RSV” and that feeling of finding a “great discount” BUT you will get stuff you use up and only the type of products you needed…because you picked it yourself! 🙂

How do you pause the subscription? I’ve been trying to figure this out for months, lol

I didn’t know they had hair samples. But, that looks way too tiny for the amount of hair I have.

Sounds like I need to go back and update my queue a little. Right now I am looking for a cheaper loose powder than the one from Chanel I like (though at least with So Choix I can get $10 off, which is good, since that stuff does not get discounted anywhere else ever) so that is what’s at the top of my queue. But it seems like they have expanded a lot since the last time I went through.

I really enjoy your So Choix reviews! I subscribed for a few months and miss it. I got a Chanel eyeshadow that I loved and would never have tried otherwise. And a Shiseido foundation sample that lasted several times. It’s a good way to get a glamorous special event look without spending a lot of money. I wish now I had gotten their yearly deal. Nice to have a high end treat every month that you actually pick out.

I just signed up and can not wait for my first box. There are tons of products I’d like to try out but just never get the chance to, like Nars blushes…are they worth it lol? Or finding the right foundation. Sometimes I really wish companies would have a page on their sites where you can purchase a good sized sample before committing to the full size. I never update foundation because I can’t see wasting the 35 bucks or 60 on something I’m not sure about. I once bought a Mac foundation online and it looked great when i would first apply it but about an hour into the day it’d oxidize so bad i looked like the great pumpkin. So this box is exciting!

Omg! I love this idea! I’m a germaphobe. I cannot stand the unhygienic way people test makeup in ulta and sephora. I also hate wasting $30 on lipstick or eyeshadow that doesn’t work well on me. This is the solution!
