The box came with this information card. The theme this month was “Best of 2016.” I hate to be cynical, but it kind of seems like they were just getting rid of leftovers. Even though I didn’t review this box many times in 2016, I already received a few of these items from Pet GiftBox.

Petstages Plaque Away Pretzel – Value $2.99

I don’t know how well this pretzel shaped toy will clean teeth, but they have an interesting texture. It contains catnip, so the cats do like to bite it.

SmartyKat Soft Tease Feather Baton Toy – Value $4.99

This braided baton toy has FEATHERS so of course, it was popular. Feathers are always popular. They seemed attached pretty well, too, which was nice.

Pet Candy “Nips” – Value $3.95

My cats usually like toys like this pretty well, also. They seem to have good catnip in them that lasts awhile.  It’s a nice size for tossing around. I previously received this toy in the May Pet GiftBox.

Multipet Scratch ‘n Play Cardboard Roller – Value $7.99?

This is pretty awesome. I don’t think it is easy for my cats to scratch because it rolls, but it has dangly things (including a sparkle ball!) and most of the cats were interested. Also, this item is totally new to me! (Note: I can’t find this variety of roller for sale online so the value is an estimate based on toy complexity.)

Charming Pet Snapcat in Blue – Value $6.99

You squeeze the fish head and the tail moves. We have a couple of these already (we received an orange one in June's Pet GiftBox) and Sneaky does like them. I'm hoping to get the New Guy interested as well. He definitely has the energy…

PetGiftBox Cowboy Crunch (2.5 oz) – Value $6.50?

You can see photos of this below with Sneaky. This is bison, which is fine, but there is no way these make good cat treats. They’re enormous and difficult to break into smaller pieces. Sneaky couldn’t even figure out how to eat it. As far as I can tell, PetGiftBox doesn’t have a shop, so I have estimated the value of this item. This was in April’s PetGiftBox, too. Only apparently Madison would eat it then, but he won’t now.

SPOT Feline Harvest Salmon Dental Treats (3 oz) – Value $2.15

These were more popular. Both Madison and Sneaky like them. We have received a lot of these in the past few months from PurrPacks and Pet Parcel, but they always get eaten, so I am not complaining. Like most dental treats, they are hard and crunchy. I think these might be either discontinued or undergoing a packaging change because they are hard to find in stock anywhere.

Gratuitous cat photos ahead:

Mostly I can only get Madison to come out for treats.  But, I love the last picture of him.

Monkey decided he wanted to sit in this box and there wasn’t anything I could do to tempt him away from it for long.

Mr. Kitty hadn’t been feeling so great the day I took these photos. He had eye surgery a few days later. He seems to be doing well afterward, we just have to put in eye drops six times a day. And yes, he is wearing a cone of shame, which I am sure you will see a picture of soon.

pet-gift-box-cat-january-2017-angus1

Here is New Guy. The day I took these photos was his first day out of isolation and he was kind of scared. I know he has a scab near his eye. We are pretty sure it is a food allergy at this point so we are in the process of switching his food. We are calling him “Angus” now; this was the name the rescue group gave him and we liked it well enough to keep. It’s just a few days later now, and he is out and about. He has made friends with Monkey. (It’s good. They can keep each other busy.)

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $35.56 for the January Pet GiftBox for cats. Although the Cowboy Crunch treat was not a hit, most of the toys generated interest, and the value was above the price of the box, though I did have to estimate a few prices. Make sure to use our MSA50 coupon to save 50% off your first box!

Angus is a great name! (Make sure you show him the movie of the same name. Or yourself, if you haven’t seen it.)

Much love to Mr Kitty from my Marley, who knows a thing or two about frequent vet visits and medications she’d rather not be taking.

I got a different variety of items in my box, though all repeats. I actually liked the repeats since rhe box had more stuff in the box than usual and some of the items were huge hits with my cats both times around. Anything we did not need a duplicate of we donated to our local cat rescue.

He says thank you!

He made it through the eye surgery and did very well (including handling the anesthesia, which I was a bit worried about due to his age). He is very angry at having to wear an e-collar (I think there will be a picture of this in the BuffBoxx review later today). But he had a check-up at the veterinary ophthalmologist’s office yesterday and is doing great, all things considered. We can take the e-collar off tomorrow, which is good, because he is kind of crusty now since he has been unable to clean himself and no wipes or waterless shampoo seems up to the task.

He is not very happy with the existence of Angus, but I think he’ll get over it. (The last new cat I got was Sneaky in 2009, which was quite awhile ago as far as Mr. Kitty is concerned.)

I remember they included that cowboy crunch treats last year. Too many treats in their boxes and my cat doesn’t like them… have way too many now.
