When you first sign up for Home Chef, you take a short quiz about your meal preferences and dietary restrictions.

Based on this quiz, Home Chef selects meals for you each week. If you’d rather receive different meals, it’s easy to swap them. You can also skip a week whenever you like.

I think the Home Chef website is very user-friendly, and I like how many meal options they offer. Most weeks, Home Chef offers 10 dinner options, a breakfast, a smoothie, and a fruit basket.

When my box shipped, I received an email with tracking information.

Ingredients for each meal are bundled together in plastic, and meats are always packed separately at the bottom of the box under ice packs to help maintain freshness.

Now, on to the food!

Meal #1- Roasted Salmon with Ginger-Scallion Sauce

Calories: 518 per serving

Prep Time: 30-40 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

I’ve been trying to eat a bit healthier lately, so for this delivery, I decided to try out some of Home Chef’s lower calorie options. I love salmon, so this dish was my first pick this week! In addition to being low calorie, it’s also low-carb and dairy-free.

After prepping my ingredients, I seared the salmon and cooked the green beans with ginger and garlic.

While the beans cooked, I made a sauce from ginger, garlic, sesame oil, teriyaki glaze, minced green onions, and water.

This dish was really tasty! It was definitely on the lighter side, but the salmon was delicious and I really enjoyed the flavor of the sauce. It also came together really quickly (definitely less than the suggested 30-40 minutes).

Meal #2- Bone-In Pork Chop with Pecorino-Garlic Butter with Hot Honey-Glazed Peas and Carrots

Calories: 600 per serving

Prep Time: 30-40 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

For my second meal pick, I went with pork chops. This recipe is a little higher in calories than the salmon but still falls under the “low-calorie” classification. It’s also gluten-free and low-carb.

After cleaning and chopping my veggies, I roasted a few cloves of garlic in the oven and seared the pork chops.

When the garlic was soft, I made a compound butter by combining it with a couple of pats of butter, pecorino cheese, and parsley. Lastly, I cooked carrots and peas with red pepper flakes, butter, and honey.

These pork chops were really yummy. I liked the spicy and sweet veggie mix, and the compound butter made this dish feel special.

Meal #3- Classic Chicken Marbella with Red Potatoes and White Balsamic Pan Sauce

Calories: 464 per serving

Prep Time: 35-45 minutes

Difficulty: Intermediate

My last meal pick was this low-calorie, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free Chicken Marbella. I only recently discovered Chicken Marbella (thanks to December’s Saucefly box), and it’s quickly become one of my favorites.

I seared the chicken breasts in a non-stick pan and set them aside. In the same pan, I cooked red potato wedges and then added vinegar, chicken stock concentrate, honey, and water into the pan to make a sauce. When the potatoes softened, I added in chopped plums, olives, parsley, and the chicken breasts.

This dish smelled really good when it was cooking, and I love that it was a one skillet dish. (Hooray for easy cleanup!)

Plums and olives seem like such an odd combination, but I love how they add sweetness and saltiness to Chicken Marbella. This was my favorite dish this week, and I’ll definitely order it again if I see it on the menu!

Verdict: Home Chef offers great variety when it comes to meal selection, and I like that the menus often feature classic dishes and comfort foods. I really enjoyed all of my meal picks this week! In terms of value, Home Chef is very competitively priced in the meal box subscription market. Their meals start at $9.95 per serving, which is cheaper than Plated ($12 per serving) and on par with Blue Apron ($9.99 per serving) and Hello Fresh ($9.99 per serving).

I only get Blue Apron (maybe once a month) and haven’t tried Home Chef but I’m impressed that they send 3 meat dishes for the same price as Blue Apron, which always has a non-meat recipe. And yes, olives and plums do sound weird together… good to know they work well!

I first tried Home Chef in the middle of chemo and radiation when I was really struggling tring to keep groceries on hand since I was not doing well and I don’t have a good support system. It was WONDERFUL! I had to contact Customer Support on several occasions and they pleasasant/accommodating every time. My usual cooking style is Indian/ethnic foods but I’d always wanted to try oriental/Asian but balked at another collection of spices/oils before knowing I’d like “homemade” version. THIS allowed and TAUGHT TECHNIQUE to do various dishes AND points out steps you may make GOOFS… e.g. where you use one ingredient multiple times. As I got too sick to use some kits, I gave to friends to try. Theyou AND their HUSBAND LOVED EVERYTHING they tried!

For the price PER SERVING, convenience of HOME DELIVERY, security of knowing how your food is HANDLED/PROCESSED combined with the enjoyment of cooking a dish that seems to MAGICALLY appear from the ingredients that is beautiful and delectable I don’t see how you can go WRONG with this!

My sister is having surgery today and will be laid up for several weeks. I sent her a gift card for a week of Home Chef. I’ll be interested to see how she likes it. I live to far away to bring over a casserole so this is the next best thing. 🙂

I am getting my first Home Chef box today, the mushroom swiss burgers on pretzel rolls with steak fries and truffle mayo, and pork chops with maple butter with carrots and broccoli mash. I have been doing plated for a couple weeks and couldn’t find anything on the plated menu I was really excited about, so I decided to try a week of Home Chef. Without tasting the Home Chef food, I would say that I prefer the Plated menus. In over 7 weeks or so of Plated, this is the first week that I haven’t found two dishes I was excited about, whereas with Home Chef over the course of the 6 weeks of menus that I can see this is the only week I was able to find two meals I was interested in, and even then I am meh on both. I am excited to try my two meals though!
