2015 Two Jakes of Diamonds Cabernet Franc

The first bottle I opened up was this bottle of Cabernet Franc. The wine card points out that this wine is known for having a “green pepper character” that helps it pair well with food. I was a little skeptical as to whether green pepper is a flavor I actually want to taste in wine, but I ended up really loving this bottle. The green pepper flavor is definitely there, but it’s pretty subtle and balanced out by other earthy and fruity flavors. I think I’m going to seek out Cabernet Franc the next time I’m making pizza. I feel like it would be a great combination!

2014 Cave de Theizé Coteaux Bourguignons Red Wine

Next up is a French wine from Burgundy that’s a mix of 90% Gamay and 10% Pinot Noir. I’m not all that familiar with Gamay, but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it from now on— this bottle is a winner! The flavor is bright and fruity with an herbal undercurrent. Blue Apron recommends pairing this wine with pork or chicken.

2015 Arco von Kammersbründl Zweigelt

Blue Apron Wine sends 3 bottles of red and 3 bottles of white every month, and the last bottle of red I received in this box is an Austrian Zweigelt. This is another wine that’s new to me, so I turned to the info card to learn a little bit about it. Blue Apron explains that this wine is known for being equally fruity and spicy, and that it has a trademark peppery character that helps it pair well with food. (They recommend thinking of it as the wine equivalent of grinding pepper over a dish!) To my palate, this wine tastes a lot like a dry, unsweetened mulled wine. It’s almost like this wine was aged with peppercorns and baking spices! I’m a big fan.

2015 Kōtuku Sauvignon Blanc

Next up is a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. (Huzzah! Sauvignon Blanc is my fave!) This wine is very light in color but full on flavor. It’s very citrusy with a crisp bite of acidity— just what I expect from a good Sauvignon Blanc from this region. Yum!

2015 Clayhouse Wines Chardonnay

I’m pretty open minded when it comes to wine, but oaky Chardonnay is one wine that just doesn’t work for me. Unfortunately, this bottle is a perfect example of the kind of Chardonnay that I don’t like: it’s oaky, oily, and very buttery. I know I’m probably in the minority when it comes to this style of Chardonnay, though, so I hope most subscribers feel differently.

2015 Arco von Kammersbründl Grüner Veltliner

The last wine in this month’s shipment is an Austrian Grüner Veltliner. I really like Grüner Veltliner, and this one is yummy. The flavor reminds me of summer; it tastes like peaches, apricots, and honey.

Verdict: I’m really impressed with the wines I received in this month’s Blue Apron Wine box. It was fun discovering (and tasting!) some great new varieties of wine, and apart from the Chardonnay, I loved everything! As a Blue Apron meal subscriber, I really appreciate that every wine comes with Blue Apron menu pairing suggestions, and I like that the bottles are a bit smaller than full-sized— I think they’re the perfect size for two people to split with a weeknight dinner. It is important to note that Blue Apron does not allow for any sort of customization, so I think this subscription would be best for wine lovers who aren’t too picky. Regarding value, the cost of the box breaks down to $11 per bottle. Considering the quality of the wine and the convenience of the Blue Apron pairing suggestions, I’m very happy with that.
