Wine Awesomeness is a monthly wine subscription that specializes in rare and unusual wines. They seek out “the coolest, craveworthiest wines” and send “vino you don't see everyday, but will want to drink everyday.”

Their curatorial team is led by a Food & Wine Sommelier of the Year!

Wine Awesomeness offers 3 different subscription options: all red, all white (with a chance of rosé or bubbly), or a mix (with a chance of rosé or bubbly). I signed up for the all white box.

Typically, Wine Awesomeness ships wine in their signature blue box, but this month’s shipment arrived in a standard brown box.

Good to know: you can skip a shipment, change your subscription preferences, or cancel your subscription from your online account.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Zazou Picpoul de Pinet - Value $12.99

The first wine I tried this month is made from 100% Picpoul, a French grape variety that’s totally new to me. Since I didn’t really know what to expect from this wine, I decided to read a little bit about it before I jumped in. The info booklet is great about providing tasting tips, but it also includes fun and useful facts about each wine. There’s a great one for this wine: “Picpoul” literally translates to “sting the lips.” What?! I was intrigued! I poured myself a glass, and the first sip nearly knocked me over. The flavor is bright, acidic, and VERY tangy. I love wines with a healthy punch of acidity, but those who prefer smooth, creamy wines may find this one a little overwhelming. The flavor is probably too bold and tangy to be a crowd pleaser, but that’s okay by me. One of my favorite things about Wine Awesomeness is that they don’t shy away from sending unusual wines!

2014 Tora Bay Sauvignon Blanc - Value $17.99

This next wine is a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and it’s SO good. I love Sauvignon Blanc, and this wine embodies all the things I love most about it. Wine Awesomeness describes is as “fruit salad in a glass… passion fruit, peach, and a splash of zesty lime.” The flavor is definitely fruity, but it finishes crisply and cleanly, leaving me drooling for another sip. Speaking of drooling, the recommended pairing for this wine is Pesto Turkey Grill Cheese. Yes, please!

Gran Passione Falanghina - Value $15.99

Last up this month is another wine that’s new to me, a 100% Falanghina from Campania, Italy. It’s a really interesting and complex wine— the aroma is very floral, but the taste is actually creamy and clean with a chalky minerality. Wine Awesomeness points out that while Falanghina isn’t a widely popular wine today, it was one of the most beloved wines of ancient Rome, and I can’t help but feel like I’m going back in time while drinking it. It’s fun to imagine that I’m tasting something similar to what the ancient Romans drank!

Verdict: I really enjoyed this box from Wine Awesomeness. The Sauvignon Blanc was downright delicious, and I really like that the other bottles both introduced me to something new. I really like that Wine Awesomeness seeks out rare and unusual wines and that they include a good amount of information about them in the provided booklet. It’s also wonderful that they send out a recipe pairing for every bottle, and I have to give them extra points for focusing on grilled cheese this month! Yum! The per bottle cost breaks down to $15 per bottle, which just about breaks even with the wines I received this month. Considering that doesn’t include shipping or curation, I’m very pleased with the value of what I received!

Sounds great, but I’d like to see more reviews before I sign up. Has anyone out there tried this one?

I’ve tried a couple of boxes of Wine Awesomeness and have never been disappointed. I mainly cancelled my subscription simply because I don’t like the inconvenience of having to be home to sign for the subscription since it’s alcohol.
