Wine Awesomeness offers 3 different subscription options: all red, all white (with a chance of rosé or bubbly), or a mix (with a chance of rosé or bubbly). I signed up for the all white box.
Typically, Wine Awesomeness ships wine in their signature blue box, but this month’s shipment arrived in a standard brown box.

Each box comes with a booklet that provides information about the month’s featured wines, tasting notes for each bottle, and suggested recipe pairings.
This month’s theme is “2016 Retrospective.”
The booklet also contains features and wine-related DIY activities.
Boxes also often include small product samples. This month’s box contained a sample of gluten-free crackers.
Now, on to the wines!
2015 Schafer Rosé - Value $18
The first bottle of wine in this month’s box is a German dry rosé that’s made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. I often associate rosé with summertime, but I think this one is full-bodied enough to stand up to the hearty stews and roasts of winter. The flavor is zesty and fruity, and it reminds me a little of lemony strawberry jam (minus the sweetness). I tend to overlook rosé in the wintertime, and this bottle is a great reminder that it can be good year round!
2013 Hope Estate Semillon - Value $12.99
This next wine is a bottle of 100% Semillon from Hunter Valley, Australia. It’s smooth with a potent acidity that reminds me of green apples and a sourness that’s almost like lemon juice. (My husband tried this with me and has been calling it ‘Granny Smith juice.’ It really does taste like freshly cut tart apples!) I’m a big fan! Also- I have to point out how much I love Wine Awesomeness’ wine bios. For each wine, they provide a fun, in-depth description, a suggested recipe pairing, and even a song to listen to while you’re drinking your wine. How cute is that?
2013 Kakhetian Royal Kakheti - Value $16.95
The last wine in this box is something that I’ve never seen before: orange wine! Just take a look at the dark orange hue:
This wine is from the Eastern European country of Georgia and made using ancient winemaking techniques. Basically, this is a wine made from white grapes in the style of red wine; the grape skins are left on long enough to darken the wine into its notable orangey hue. This wine is… different. Since the grape skins were left on for so long, this wine has the tannic structure of a red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon. The flavors are extremely bold, and it almost tastes concentrated. More than anything else I’d describe the dry, astringent flavor as powerful. I can’t say I finished a full glass of this, and I can’t say I’d pick up another bottle, but I’m glad that I got to try something utterly new to me.
Verdict: What an interesting month for Wine Awesomeness. I loved both the rosé and the Semillon, and I’m pleased that I was able to sample a wine that I didn’t even know existed before this box! I appreciate that Wine Awesomeness seeks out rare and unusual wines and that they include a good amount of information about them in the provided booklet. It’s also wonderful that they send out a recipe pairing for every bottle; that’s a big plus in my book. The per bottle cost breaks down to $15 per bottle. The value of the three wines is $47.94, so I’m happy with the value of what I received.
