Robb-vices-january-2017-booklet-2

This month’s booklet talks about how vices are most enjoyable when you’ve worked hard for them. How beer tastes best after a sports victory, for example, or how a delicious meal is even more delicious when you’ve earned your hunger through hard work. January’s box includes items with this idea in mind. So many subscription boxes focus on healthy eating and detox in January, and I like that Robb Vices has taken a slightly different approach to the idea of healthy living. It’s nice to see a box that isn’t so much about making up for bad choices as it is about finding the right balance between health and indulgence so you can better enjoy the vices to come!

With that in mind, I’m not at all surprised to see that the hero item this month is a health tracker!

Robb-vices-january-2017-misfit

Misfit Ray with Black Leather Band - Value $119.99

Huzzah! The Misfit Ray is a sleep and fitness tracker that automatically tracks steps, distance, calories burned, and sleep patterns. It comes with three small batteries and doesn’t need to be charged.

Robb-vices-january-2017-misfit-box

I currently have an Apple Watch that I use for fitness tracking, but before that, I had a Misfit Shine, so I’m pretty familiar with the brand. Like a lot of fitness trackers, you don’t get a ton of detailed information from the Ray itself, but it does communicate the basics pretty well— when you tap the tracker, different colored lights will flash to let you know how you’re progressing toward your daily goal. (You can set up daily goals and access more detailed info in the Misfit app.) The Ray will also alert you to calls and texts, and you can set an alarm through the app so the band will wake you up using vibrations. (I haven’t tried using the Ray as an alarm yet, but I like the idea of waking up to gentle vibrations instead of a buzzing alarm!)

Another interesting feature of the ray is that it’s waterproof! (The leather band isn’t waterproof, though, so if you want to use it to track calories burned while swimming you might want to pick up a set of sport bands from the Misfit site.)

Here’s a picture of the Ray on my wrist:

I’ve been wearing the Ray for a couple of days, and I quite like it. I feel like it gives me access to basic info whenever I need it, and I don’t mind having to delve into the app if I want more detailed information (like my total number of steps for the day).

My favorite thing about the Ray, though, is definitely the design. I think it’s one of the most stylish trackers I’ve ever seen. The sleek, modern shape perfectly suits my personal style, and I love that it’s all black. Very chic.

Here’s a shot of the Ray on my husband’s wrist, too:

I really like the way it looks on him but he isn’t really a fan. (He thinks the thin band gives the tracker a delicate, feminine feel.)

Robb-vices-january-2017-candle

Apotheke Binchotan Charcoal Candle (11 oz.) - Value $36

Next up is this gorgeous soy wax charcoal candle. I immediately started laughing when I saw this in the box because I just bought this exact same candle a few weeks ago!

Robb-vices-january-2017-candle-unboxed

I’ve been burning it for the last several weeks, and I absolutely love it. The aroma is deeply fragrant and heady with notes of sandalwood, amber, patchouli, and wood smoke. It’s been sitting on the counter of my (relatively small) bathroom, and it’s the kind of candle that manages to fill the room with fragrance even when it’s not lit.

Robb-vices-january-2017-candle-alone

This is a good sized candle, and it has an estimated burn time of 50-60 hours.

Robb-vices-january-2017-radice

Next up are two different products from nature-based, vegan skincare line Radice Organic.

Robb-vices-january-2017-radice-orange

Radice Orange Blossom Water - Listed Value $50

Radice’s Orange Blossom Water is a toner that “delivers powerful antioxidants and astringents to tighten pores and prepare the skin for moisturizing.” I’ve been using it for the last couple of days, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s very moisturizing (not at all drying like harsh, alcohol-based toners can be), and the aroma is lovely. It smells just like orange blossoms— citrusy and floral. The aroma does linger, though, so if you don’t like the smell of orange blossoms I’d advise applying it with a light hand.

Robb-vices-january-2017-radice-blackcurrant

Radice Blackcurrant Cream - Listed Value $35

Robb Vices also included Radice’s Blackcurrant Cream, a day and night facial cream. It has a serum-like consistency, and the bottle is fitted with a dropper top dispenser.

Robb-vices-january-2017-radice-blackcurrant-detail

Radice developed this cream to help protect sensitive skin from the environment, and it’s recommended for those who experience redness and dry patches. I have sensitive, combination skin that always goes haywire around this time of year. I’ve definitely been experiencing dry patches and redness, so I was excited to give this cream a try! It’s a lot lighter than my go-to winter moisturizers (Laneige’s Water Bank Moisture Cream and It’s Skin’s Creme d’Escargot), but I found it to be surprisingly moisture-rich. It absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling light and hydrated. The smell of this cream is great, too. It smells just like sun-ripe berries!

Robb-vices-january-2017-bottle

Nomader Water Bottle - Value $19.95

Have you ever gotten a subscription box that feels like it was curated just for you? I’m really feeling that way about this box. I swear just last week I almost bought this exact water bottle!! A friend of mine was telling me about how she swapped her stainless water bottle for a collapsable one because she loves being able to roll it up and toss it into her bag when it’s not full, and I thought, “I should get one of those!” So, well done Robb Vices for reading my mind!

Robb-vices-january-2017-bottle-rolled

This bottle is great for everyday use, and I think it’ll be perfect for travel, too. I like that I’ll be able to tote it around in my carry-on bag and fill it up with water once I’m through security.

Robb-vices-january-2017-brode

Brode Electrolyte Vitamins - Value $24.97

Next up is a 10 pack of electrolyte vitamins. These can be taken with any liquid and provide “more electrolytes than Gatorade with less sugar than Pedialyte.”

Robb-vices-january-2017-brode-pills

The reviews for these pills are really promising. Users report that they’re great to take before an intense workout or a big night out, and quite a few people claim that they effectively prevent hangovers! I’m going to Vegas at the end of this month so…. yeah… these will come in handy, I think.

Robb-vices-january-2017-bar

The YES Bar Macadamia Chocolate - Value $3.49

Last up this month is a Macadamia Chocolate YES Bar. It’s made with organic, whole foods (including macadamia nuts, cherries, and German chocolate) and is free from gluten, dairy, soy, and artificial ingredients.

Robb-vices-january-2017-bar-detail

I’ve had YES Bars once or twice before, and I think they’re great. (Macadamia Chocolate is my favorite flavor.) I’m very picky about nutrition bars, and I think this is one of the tastiest bars on the market.

Verdict: This box is really fantastic, and I kind of feel like it was curated just for me! (Get out of my brain, Robb Vices!) The skincare items are great, I love the candle, I’ll get a lot of use from the water bottle, and I’m excited to try the electrolyte pills the next time I travel. I’m even excited about the fitness tracker. Even though I already have one that I use every day, I’m glad that I now have one that I can use for swimming, and I think it’ll be interesting to try tracking my sleep patterns. I’m always happy to receive health-related items in January, and I’m thrilled that Robb Vices managed to curate a health-centric box that still feels luxe and high-end. Best of all, the combined retail value of the items in this month’s box is approximately $290. That’s incredible!!!

Hey Lindsey, is there any way for you to correct the value of the red current cream? You say the value is $75 but if you go to their website, it’s $70 for a full oz, 30 ml, while this bottle is only .5 oz and 15 ml. I was trying to swap for it but everyone uses your valuation. Thanks so much.

We are working on it! 🙂

Updated. 🙂

So the free gift is a free box at the end? Can anyone confirm? That would be sweet because you also get a discount for 6 months that would make it about $56 per.

I’m just wondering what’s the deal with a charcoal candle? Does it clean the air or something? Might be a silly question but I’ve personally never seen charcoal in a candle

Reply ButtonReply

Janie

Sorry if I overlooked it but I didn’t see anything in the review. If I sign up now would I still receive the January box or will they start me off with the February box? I’m craving that candle and toner…..

Click on their site, it says Feb is your first box if you sub now. I want this Jan box so bad!!

Cristal

I feel the promo code is misleading. I order a six month sub with the promo code and was told by RV that the promo code from MSA is a free box. However, they send it at the END of your subscription. Well it’s the end of my subscription and I have not received my bonus box. My Misfit arrived broken and they have not responded to any of my emails. If you liked to be ignored by customer service and not receive items promised then this is a box for you.

On the free gift… I was told would arrive toward the end of my subscription as well. But – I was asked what my favorite vice(s) were – and that they would tailor the free gift to my response. I’ve received my last box in subscription – and have not received any gift yet:( I’ll keep waiting! Other than this though – I absolutely love Robb Vices and their curation!

I got a broken misfit too. The bracelet leather tore and my battery compartment was broken. I emailed several times and finally got the response that they are still working on a solution for the broken misfit. I hope RV makes this right. They normally have good service, but I have never had an item from them with this many quality issues. The durability and design of the misfit is just bad for something that is going to be worn constantly.

I had a problem with my candle and they were quick to respond and very helpful. My husband (and I) loved this first box which was a holiday gift for him.

I have had the opposite experience with their service. If you call the number on their website, I have had wonderful success in having issues resolved.

I hate that they don’t ship to PA. It seems really silly since there hasn’t been alcohol in a box in months!

Reply ButtonReply

Leia

They don’t ship to Utah either. I wonder if I could hop over the border to NV and get a post office box. Will they deliver to a PO box?

Reply ButtonReply

Sammee

No; the packages come via FedEx and you have to sign for most of them because of the alcohol. Maybe there’s another service/company in NV you can have them shipped to that will sign for them and maybe let you claim it upon showing ID?

hildol

There actually is alcohol in most boxes. For example: Dec was the Fiol Prosecco and Absinth, November was the craft cider beers, October was Whiskey, September was Sake and so on and so forth. They tend to have it in almost every box. I love this box. It has been a fun thing to open with my husband every month 🙂 I am sorry it doesnt ship to your state 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Sammee

Sorry they don’t ship to PA, but most of the boxes do contain alcohol. This is only my third box, but it’s the first one I’ve received in those three months that didn’t have alcohol. RV should really make an effort to curate a non-alcoholic version of their boxes. It would greatly expand their customer base to people in states that currently can’t subscribe because of alcohol inclusions and people who are hesitant about subscribing because they don’t drink at all. Even though I can receive the box, I’d opt for the non-alcoholic version since most of the alcohol they send doesn’t appeal to me.

Overall, I LOVED this box. I’m going to use everything in it (I have my Misfit band on right now). I was disappointed with my first two boxes; I feel like this is the RV box I’ve been waiting for since I subscribed. Hope they keep it up!

Connie

When I originally signed up I thought you could opt for a no alcohol subscription based on the questions. I have been debating on whether or not I would sign up for another year but if they offered a no alchohol box I would definately renew. I agree that it would broaden their subscription base if they did.

Beth L

I recieved the same box which started in Dec for my boyfriend as a gift but I found that I was a hundred times more excited…. Maybe because I am a girl… Anyway last month got used and all is gone except the blue tooth ear thingy he wears… But this box this month just ROCKED MY WORLD.. Any man or women would love most or all… It was made for me and if I could kiss them I would… Gosh was a box and the price of all items is so crazy.
I total loved your review and feel everything you said and I am glad someone else loved it as much as me. What a perfect box for January right?

Reply ButtonReply

Beth L

Sorry I should proof read my posts sorry. I ment to say, Gosh WHAT a box.

Letha

Would you say that the boxes have huge value for the price? Is there typically two or more items in the boxes every month?

Thank you?
