My husband and I play together in a band; he's on the drums, and I'm on the bass. So I was a natural fit when Magic Room reached out to ask about reviewing their subscription! They sent us the Drums + Guitar pack so we could try both of their bamboo products.

Magic Room notes on the tags that all their products are biodegradable. I'll admit, I've not been too worried about the excess trash that my old guitar picks create since they're so small, so I was more interested in tone and durability.

Both products came packaged in their own reusable bags. I used mine to carry my picks in my purse so they wouldn't get lost between home and band practice.

This is actually the first subscription box I've gotten with a handwritten note, which is a nice touch! They include a monthly playlist for subscribers, too, and I really enjoyed listening to December's selections while writing this review. Lots of groups familiar to me, like Jeff Buckley and Sharon Jones, and some new-to-me names like Lucas Jack.

5-pack of Bamboo Composite Guitar Picks - Value $8

Many bassists play with their fingers, but I've always played with a pick. The material that a pick is made of can definitely affect tone, even on an electric instrument. I've experimented with composites similar to these in the past in addition to rubber and felt picks. They usually produce a warmer tone, more like using your fingers to pick, so I was excited to try these out!

Since these are made of bamboo, they're a little thicker than most picks, but the design is tapered so you don't have a thick edge to strum with. Thickness was a big disadvantage to using the rubber and felt picks I've tried, so this is a nice touch.

These also have a bit of a curve to them that conforms to your thumb - it took a little getting used to at first, but by the end of the night I didn't notice it. They have a strong clear coat too. I was surprised that at the end of a three-hour practice, my pick didn't have a scratch!

Tone-wise, I thought they were slightly warmer than my regular Jim Dunlop picks, but not as warm and round as other uncoated composites I've tried. I do think the difference in tone would be more noticeable on an acoustic guitar.

Bamboo Drumsticks - Value $12/pair

I handed these off to my husband to test out at our same practice. He liked that they were lightweight, but thought they weren't as well balanced weight-wise as a pair of his normal drumsticks.

After 3 hours of practice, you can see the wear is more apparent on the Magic Room sticks (left) compared to his regular hardwood sticks (right), which are about 3 months old and get used in our weekly practices together as a band.

Verdict: I was overall happy with the bamboo composite picks from Magic Room. They aren't my holy grail of picks, but they were easy to handle and did give me a slightly warmer tone, and they seem like they'll last quite awhile. My husband, however, preferred his regular drumsticks to the more eco-friendly bamboo. Price wise, the picks and sticks are both on par for similar "specialty" products, with both cheaper and more expensive options available. I can get plain old picks for much cheaper, but other composite picks are in a similar price range. I'm really curious to see how these wear over time and plan to keep using them for now!
