The Craft Beer Club includes flyers that provide information about the brewing companies and beers featured in each month’s box. This month’s box includes beers from Saucony Creek Brewing Company and Bootlegger’s Brewing Company.

This month, I gathered a couple of friends to help me taste the beers I received from Craft Beer Club. We tasted them all side by side, and it was a lot of fun to compare notes on each one!

We started out by sampling the beers from Orange County’s Bootlegger’s Brewing Company.

(While editing my photographs, I noticed that Bootlegger’s beers are unevenly filled. Can you see how much fuller the centermost bottle of Rocco Red is than the rest?)

Bootlegger’s Rocco Red

The first beer we tried is Bootlegger’s Rocco Red, an American Red Ale with 7.1% ABV. This was definitely a crowd pleaser! We all liked it. The beer starts out with a nice malty caramel flavor and then finishes with a refreshing crispness. There’s a lot of flavor, but this beer is far from heavy. We all agreed that we’d be happy to finish a few of these in one sitting.

Bootlegger’s Far Out IPA

The next beer we tried is Bootlegger’s Far Out IPA, one of the brewery’s bestselling releases. It’s a West Coast Style India Pale Ale with 7% ABV, and, again, it was a hit across the group. Unlike a lot of IPA’s this beer is bitter, but not too bitter. We all agreed that the taste is crisp, refreshing, and a little grapefruity.

Next up, we tried the beers from Kutztown, Pennsylvania’s Saucony Creek Brewing Company. Saucony was also founded by an expert home brewer, and the brewery specializes in “authentic, small-batch creations with an adventurous/rebellious spirit.”

Saucony Kutztown Lager

I’ve always been a fan of classic lagers, so I was really excited to see one in this month’s box! Kutztown Lager is an Amber Lager with 5% ABV, and it’s clean and easy to drink (like a good lager should be) but with plenty of flavor to keep it interesting. Saucony smokes the malt for this beer over a ring of Kutztown Bologna, a local Dutch Pennsylvanian specialty. We could all pick up on a hint of smokiness, but (luckily?) the beer doesn’t really taste meaty.

Saucony Hexerei White Ale

Lastly, we sampled this 5% ABV Witbier. It’s brewed with white wheat, malts, coriander, and sweet orange peel and then filtered over blood oranges for an extra zap of citrus flavor. Overall, the group liked this beer, too, and found it to be bright, tangy, and citrusy.

Verdict: This was a great box from The Craft Beer Club, and all of the beers were a hit with my friends and me. My favorite beer this month has to be the Kutztown Lager, but I really enjoyed them all. When it comes to value, the cost of each Craft Beer Club box breaks down to $3.50 per beer. While that’s not exactly a steal, I think the price is fair— especially since most of the beers featured in the subscription aren’t available nationwide. I love the convenience of having craft beers sent directly to my door, and I really enjoy learning about new craft breweries every month!
