Boxwalla is a subscription box company dedicated to introducing subscribers to the best in food, books, film, and green beauty. They curate bi-monthly boxes in each of those four categories.

Boxwalla's Food Box introduces subscribers to gourmet food products from small-batch producers across the US. The curators at Boxwalla seek out the best American artisanal products, and they only include their favorite products from any given category.

Boxwalla has beautiful packaging. Their boxes are sturdy and beautiful, and they’re crafted from tree-free paper by a small company in Rajasthan, India.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the subscription review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Boxwalla Food, $49.95 a month, box. Subscriptions for December are currently closed, so, if you sign up now, your first box will arrive in February. (The cutoff date for each box is the 15th of the preceding month. So, to receive the February box, your order will need to be placed by January 15th.)

Boxwalla's Food Box includes a card that explains the box’s theme and describes the products selected to represent it. The theme for this box is “Wonder-food life.” (The products are meant to be so enticing and addicting that you can’t help but say: It’s a Wonderful Life!)

Unfortunately, one of the items I received in this box, the Umeboshi Plums, arrived spoiled. We reached out to Boxwalla about this issue and, even though it seems most subscribers were unaffected, they decided to issue all subscribers a refund for the plums (a total of $12.99).

Rum Toddy Toffee Dessert Sauce (13 oz.) - Value $12

The first item I sampled is this Rum Toddy Toffee Dessert Sauce. Made from buttered rum, spices, vanilla bean, chai, and maple syrup, it can be drizzled on ice cream, bread pudding, or custard. Since this box arrived in December, I think it’s wonderfully appropriate that it contained a holiday-ready dessert sauce! It’s sweet and sticky, and the flavor reminds me of cinnamon rolls and sticky toffee pudding. I warmed up this sauce and drizzled it over vanilla ice cream, and it was incredible.

Askinosie Chocolate Hazelnut Spread (6.5 oz.) - Value $13

The next two items in the box are both from San Francisco’s Askinosie, a chocolatier that specialized in bean to bar chocolate and oversees all steps of their chocolate making in-house. The first is a Chocolate Hazelnut Spread that’s made with DuChilly Hazelnuts from Washington State and single origin roasted cocoa nibs and cocoa. It’s creamy, rich, decadent, and super chocolatey. I tried it on toast, and it was like eating candy for breakfast!

Askinosie Dark Chocolate + Crunchy Sugar Crystals & Vanilla Bean (3 oz.) - Value $9

The second Askinosie item, a dark chocolate bar made with crunchy sugar crystals and vanilla bean, is a collaboration with Zingerman’s, and I love the packaging! The chocolate is complex and a little bitter, but the crunchy sugar crystals add little pops of sweetness. It’s so tasty!

Verdict: Boxwalla always does a great job of seeking out and sending delicious food items, and I think their packaging is top notch. I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to sample the umeboshi plums, but I completely understand that spoilage is sometimes unavoidable with perishable items, and I think that Boxwalla did an incredible job handling the issue. Refunding all subscribers, regardless of whether or not their particular item was affected, is some exceptional customer service. The value of the items included in this month’s box comes in just a few dollars below the cost. I wouldn’t recommend Boxwalla for anyone looking for a high-value box (it usually breaks even or comes in a little over or under), but I do think the curation is great. I can definitely rely on Boxwalla to introduce me to some new and delicious products in every box.

What do you think about Boxwalla? Have you tried their food, film, book, or green beauty boxes yet?

Is it just me or are some of these reviews repeated a few times in a row? I saw this in yesterdays, I’m pretty sure.
