Unique Vintage 1950s Navy & Floral Bouquet Short Sleeve Draper Swing Dress – Value $78

There are a lot of things about this dress that are really perfect for me. I love the colors and the pattern and regularly wear clothes that are this bright and bold. The fit is also quite good.

However, I am not sure the waistline is doing me any favors. High waists like this are usually not so flattering on me. I am going to try to find a white shrug that is a little bit bulky to wear with this because I think if I can create the illusion of having a bigger top half, it will make the waist look narrower than it does right now. Because I do really like everything else about the dress. (Other styling suggestions are also welcome. Feel free to add them in the comments.)

It was really cold out the day we took these pictures (and for a few days before and after) so we had to take them inside. I can still probably wear this during the winter with some thick tights and a shrug or cardigan. (“Really cold” is a relative term. I live in the South.)

Here’s a look at how much material was used to make the skirt.

And here’s a look at the back. It is fairly low in the back but I was wearing a normal bra and you couldn’t see it.

Verdict: The dress I received from Unique Vintage this month had a value of $78, which is definitely above the cost of the subscription. Plus, it was actual regularly-priced merchandise and not something from the clearance page. I am happy to have received something bold and colorful and I’m also pleased with the fit.

The back of that dress is gorgeous and you look perfect in it. Really, really pretty dress on you.

The only time the dress looked high wasted was when you were facing straight ahead with your arms behind your back. The back and sides look fine. Unless you intend on facing everyone at attention I think you don’t need to over think the dress. A shrug would do for chilly days and evenings but doesn’t have to be a part of the outfit, especially since you will get plenty of wear out of it once spring gets here.

You might try a solid colored sash to use as a belt and tie it into a bow in the back. That would cinch the waist and add to the retro look.

Thanks, I have a little shoe problem. As in, I am running out of space in my closet for shoes because I keep buying them…but it means I will nearly always have something to match outfits. (I think these came from Shoe Carnival so they were affordable, at least.)

Girl, have you still not gotten a petticoat yet?? It’s a must for these lovely dresses you are collecting! Even these cheap ones from Amazon totally transform a dress: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011RIZW6K/

P.S. I saw that pattern in the first photo and was scared, then I saw it on you and was IN LOVE. A great reminder to try clothes on, give them a chance.

I am going to order a petticoat this month. Thanks for the link.

I saw the pattern and I was NOT scared. I love stuff like that. It’s what I was hoping for when I signed up!

I would add a simple skinny belt to actuate your waist and put your hair up to help elongate the overall shape. Very cute dress, you can make it work!

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Ragan – you look amazing in the dress.

You look great in this dress as-is! I LOVE this dress and the back! I’d make sure to wear your hair up to show it off!

A Beautiful dress from when I was young. I’m 73. Great for summer cocktail parties around the pool. Or for dancing at a night club. You are going for a sexy look and a petticoat ruins that. And no belt. It should flow naturally as you move. Wear it just as it is!

Gorgeous! And that deep v-back is super pretty.

I would add a wide belt to it, that will you the defined waist you are looking for.

Beautiful dress, and it looks great as-is! I think in the last review you mentioned need of a petticoat, and I think this dress could benefit from that as well. 🙂

You and the dress are stunning. The shrug might be advisable for the cold, but I agree with the other resonant. A fluffy multi net petticoat will balance out the silhouette. It will also make your waist look even tinier.
