2015 Vigilance Syrah

I first tried Blue Apron Wine about a year ago, and I was very excited to re-subscribe! This is the only wine subscription I know of that sends 500 ml bottles, and I think the size is absolutely perfect for two people to share over a weeknight dinner!

The first bottle I sampled from this shipment is a California Syrah. It’s very dark red in color, and the flavor is great. It’s dry and tannic, with a dark, peppery taste that’s reserved and a little fruity.

2014 Fabre Fitou

This next wine is a French red from the Languedoc region. (Fun fact: France’s Languedoc region produces more wine than the entire US!) This wine is less full-bodied than the Syrah, but it still has some solid structure. Blue Apron recommends looking for notes of cherry, sage, rosemary, and bacon, and I definitely think the flavor is herbaceous and fruity.

2015 Medel Pinot Noir

Blue Apron Wine sends 3 bottles of red and 3 bottles of white every month, and the last bottle of red I received in this box is a Pinot Noir from Oregon. This bottle is another winner! It tastes like earthy plums (a common flavor in Pinot Noir) with a hint of vanilla. It’s very drinkable, and it has a nice smooth finish.

2015 Vinum Cellars Riesling

Of the three whites I received in this shipment, this California Riesling ended up being my favorite. I most often go for wines that are extremely dry, but I really like how the hint of sweetness in this one is balanced by a solid acidity. Blue Apron pinpoints flavors of green apple, pear, apricot, and smoke, which I think is spot on.

2015 Clayhouse Malvasia Bianca

I’ve tried Malvasia Bianca only once or twice before and only because of my Winc subscription. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen it anywhere else.) This wine is very floral— the aroma is all citrus, peaches, and flowers. The flavor is a little floral, too, but not overpoweringly so. There’s a medium acidity that helps ensure this wine stays crisp and refreshing.

Seigneurie De Chatillon Viré -Clessé

The last wine in this box is a white French Burgundy. It’s probably the most reserved of the three whites in this box, and it has a really nice minerality that Blue Apron describes as “limestone.” There’s a little bit of fruitiness too, but it’s pretty muted. Blue Apron points out that this is a great food wine, and I have to agree. I paired it with roast chicken, and each sip left my palate clean, refreshed, and ready for another bite!

Verdict: My husband and I have wine with dinner a couple of times per week, but we don’t always want to finish a full-sized bottle— especially on a work night! I love that Blue Apron Wine sends smaller, 500 ml bottles to pair with weeknight dinners, and it’s convenient that they come with Blue Apron menu pairing suggestions. The packaging is nice, and I think the wine cards are really well done. It is important to note that Blue Apron does not allow for any sort of customization, so I think this subscription would be best for wine lovers who aren’t too picky. Regarding the value, the cost of the box breaks down to $11 per bottle. Considering the quality of the wine and the convenience of the Blue Apron pairing suggestions, I think that’s a good value.
