Winc (formerly known as Club W) is a wine subscription box that re-imagines the traditional wine club.

They offer a regularly changing selection of unique, small production wines that are sourced directly from vineyards and winemakers.

winc-november-2016-quiz

When you sign up to join Winc, you take a short, fun “palate profile” quiz that helps determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations or choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection.

winc-november-2016-booklet

Winc used to send an info card for each wine in your shipment, but it looks like they’ve replaced the cards with a mini magazine!

The magazine includes information on all of the current Winc wines, and there are even wine-related articles.

Now, on to the wine!

2015 So This Happened White Blend - $13

My first wine pick this month is a blend of Malvasia Bianca, Muscat Canelli, and Chenin Blanc. It’s a dry wine, but the flavor reminds me of flowers and fruity candy (but without the sweetness). The taste is just… lovely! Sometimes wines that are super floral can veer a little too close to “grandma’s perfume drawer” for my liking, but this one is nicely balanced with tropical fruit and citrus. I don’t think I’ve ever had a wine quite like this before, and I really like it.

2016 Cape Route Chenin Blanc - $13

Chenin Blanc, like most grapes, can taste a lot different depending on the climate of where it’s grown. (Cool temperature fruits ripen less quickly and produce a lot less sugar than their warm weather counterparts.) For this Cape Route Chenin Blanc, winemakers used grapes grown in two different South African climates. The flavor is crisp and a little sharp at first, and then reservedly fruity. It wasn’t my favorite bottle from this month’s box, but I enjoyed it.

2015 #TBT White Blend - $13

Winc describes this as a playful wine, with a flavor reminiscent of canned fruit cocktail. What a wonderful sales pitch, am I right? I couldn’t resist giving it a try! In some ways, this wine reminds me of the So This Happened blend, probably because they’re made with some of the same grape varietals. (This one is a blend of Muscat ,Malvasia Bianca, Chenin Blanc and Viognier.) It has a touch of florals that are balanced by a crisp acidity and a good dose of fruit. I’m a fan.

2015 Alchemist Noir Red Blend - $13

My last pick this month is the 2015 Alchemist Noir Red Blend. Winc releases this wine every year, and I love it. (I always scoop up a bottle as soon as I see it on their site!) It’s an easy drinking red that has lots of red berry flavor and a little bit of sweetness. I don’t often go for sweetish wines, but there’s something about this one I just love. The flavor reminds me of cherry pie filling or maybe dark berry jam. Yum!

Verdict: This was a great box from Winc, and I really enjoyed my wines! My favorite bottles this month have to be the So This Happened blend and the Alchemist Noir, but everything was pretty great. At $13 per bottle, I think Winc offers a pretty good value, and I love the fun labels they design for their bottles. If you like trying new small-production wines that you can’t find in the grocery store (or you’re looking for a wine subscription that allows you to hand pick the bottles you receive), I definitely recommend checking out Winc!

Also, if you’re looking for a special gift for a wine-loving friend or family member, I highly recommend checking out their boxed gift options. From caramel popcorn and red wine to rosé and bath products, they’ve got some incredible gift options this year!

What do you think of Winc? What bottles did you pick this month?

I dislike that they’ve replaced the cards with the magazine, especially since two of my wine selections were not in the magazine. Also, I liked to save the recipes which fit neatly in my old recipe card box. It’s a small thing but not a change of which I am fond.

I like the Alchemist Noir so much I’ve chosen it the last three months. It’s just lovely. If they are still available, I’d like to try the So This Happened and/or the TBT, but I’m afraid of the florals. I’m always worried it’s going to taste like soap.
