When you first sign up for Home Chef, you take a short quiz about your meal preferences and dietary restrictions.
Based on this quiz, Home Chef selects meals for you each week. If you’d rather receive different meals, it’s easy to swap them. You can also skip a week whenever you like.
I think the Home Chef website is very user-friendly, and I like how many meal options they offer. Most weeks, Home Chef offers 10 dinner options, a breakfast, a smoothie, and a fruit basket.
When my box shipped, I received an email with tracking information.
Now, on to the food!
Meal #1- Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Spaghetti
Calories: 830 per serving
Prep Time: 25-35 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
The first meal I picked in this box is Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Spaghetti. I actually misread the title of this dish when I ordered it (I missed the pesto and thought it was just sun-dried tomato spaghetti), but I like sun-dried tomato pesto so it was a nice surprise!
As always, the Home Chef recipe cards provided easy, step-by-step instructions for each dish.
I inventoried the ingredients for this dish and then began cleaning and prepping my veggies.
In kind of a fun twist, the fresh tomatoes for this dish were mixed with garlic, olive oil, and salt and pepper to make a quick bruschetta. (I never mixed bruschetta into the pasta before, but it’s a great idea!) As per the instructions, I laid out the bruschetta on a baking sheet and cooked in the oven for about 10 minutes to soften the tomatoes. I also toasted some garlic and olive oil topped baguette.
While the tomatoes and baguette baked in the oven, I cooked and drained the provided spaghetti. I then mixed in some spinach, the bruschetta mix, and sun-dried tomato pesto. (There was A LOT of pesto for this dish.)
I divided the spaghetti between two plates and topped it with slivered almonds and red pepper flakes. On the side, I served the garlic bread.
This dish was really tasty, but there was just a little too much pesto for my liking. (I think I’ve felt this way about Home Chef’s pesto dishes before, so I’ll have to remember to go a bit lighter the next time I order a dish with pesto.
I should also mention that the portions for this dish were very generous. The two-portion recipe could have easily served three.
Meal #2- Sicilian Herbed Chicken with Green Beans and Mozzarella Tomatoes
Calories: 398 per serving
Prep Time: 25-35 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
The following day I made Sicilian Herbed Chicken.
I washed the green beans, chopped the garlic, and hollowed out the Roma tomatoes.
I packed the tomatoes full of parsley butter and topped them with shredded mozzarella and Italian seasoning.
I baked them in the oven until the cheese started to melt and then I took out the tray and added green beans and chicken seasoned with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
When everything was cooked, I plated the dish and topped the chicken with balsamic glaze.
This dish was tasty (the tomatoes, in particular, were delicious), but it was definitely a light dinner. My husband was in the fridge snacking not long after we finished eating.
Meal #3- White Wine Garlic Chicken with Roasted Potatoes and Peas
Calories: 547 per serving
Prep Time: 35-45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
My last pick this week was this garlicky chicken dish with potato wedges and peas.
Home Chef included 10 cloves of garlic for this recipe— that’s a lot of garlic!
I roasted the potato wedges and pan seared the chicken. When the chicken was cooked through, I added the garlic cloves, white wine, thyme, and butter to make a sauce.
This dish was pretty good, and I enjoyed the garlic and wine sauce. The potatoes were good, too. I baked them for a bit longer than the recipe called for to make sure they were nice and crispy.
Verdict: Home Chef offers over 10 meal options every week, and I absolutely love their large selection. I enjoyed the meals I picked this week, and I think I might steal the cheesy tomato recipe and make it again soon. Since Home Chef offers so much variety, I don’t want to generalize too much about their offerings; however, I will say that I’ve come to expect comfort food from Home Chef. In terms of value, Home Chef is very competitively priced in the meal box subscription market. Their meals start at $9.95 per serving, which is cheaper than Plated ($12 per serving) and on par with Blue Apron ($9.99 per serving) and Hello Fresh ($9.90 per serving).
