The Craft Beer Club includes flyers that provide information about the brewing companies and beers featured in each month’s box. This month’s box includes beers from Evil Genius Beer Company and Spider Bite Beer Company. (What great picks for an October box. These seem perfect for Halloween!)

Evil Genius Beer Company is based in Philadelphia, PA, and they’re known for pairing serious beers with silly names. (Reading through Evil Genius’ offerings is like a pop culture pop quiz! Their beers include: Turtle Power, a grapefruit pale ale, I Love Lamp, a pineapple hefeweizen, Ma! The Meatloaf!, a mango belgian wit, and Shut Up, Meg!, a farmhouse IPA.)

Evil Genius Stacy’s Mom IPA (7.5 % ABV)

The first Evil Genius beer included in this month’s box is Stacy’s Mom, an American IPA made exclusively with Citra hops. (Thank you, Evil Genius, because I’m pretty sure I’m now going to have this song in my head all day!) It’s citrusy and fruity, with a pretty minimal amount of bitterness for an IPA. The finish is crisp and clean. I’m a fan!

Evil Genius Purple Monkey Dishwasher (6.7% ABV)

One of my favorite things about the American craft beer scene is discovering new brews that have creative flavor profiles. I can’t help but get excited when I get to try a beer that’s made with unexpected ingredients, like this porter that’s infused with chocolate and peanut butter. I can’t say I was able to easily pick out the flavor of peanut butter in this beer, but it has a pleasant nuttiness. In case anyone is wondering, I’m pretty sure the name for this beer comes from The Simpsons.

The second brewery featured this month is Long Island’s Spider Bite Beer Company.

Spider Bite Boris the Spider (10% ABV)

Like a lot of people, I have a pretty strong dislike of spiders, but I absolutely love the ones on Spider Bite’s packaging! I mean, look at Boris in his little hop-emblazoned ushanka! Too cute! I really enjoy dark beers, and this one is right up my alley. It’s made with eight different malts, and the flavor is rich and roasty, with flavors of coffee and chocolate. (The head on this beer even looks like coffee crema!) At 10% ABV, this beer isn’t messing around. It doesn’t taste that strong, though, so I had to remind myself a few times to sip slowly.

Spider Bite First Bite Pale Ale (5.5% ABV)

First Bite Pale Ale is so named because it’s the first beer ever brewed by Spider Bite. Even though it’s technically a pale ale, to me, this beer tastes kind of like a pale ale/ lager hybrid. It’s very easy to drink, and it has a nice dry finish. I could easily toss back a couple of these in one sitting.

Verdict: This was a great box from The Craft Beer Club. Both of the breweries featured in this box are new to me, and I love that the beers seem appropriate for Halloween. I greatly enjoyed the IPA, Stout, and Pale Ale! When it comes to value, the cost of each Craft Beer Club box breaks down to just over $3 per beer. While that’s not exactly a steal, I think the price is fair— especially since most of the beers featured in the subscription aren’t available nationwide. I love the convenience of having craft beers sent directly to my door, and it’s so much fun learning about new craft breweries every month!

What time of the month is this delivered? This would be a good christmas gift but for it to arrive on time should I order the november box? or would the december box work?

Hi Jenny,

What a great gift idea! 🙂

I’ve just checked the Craft Beer Club site, and it looks like they allow you to specify how many shipments you’d like to receive (ongoing, 1, 2, 3, etc.). You should be able to sign up for a gift subscription for only one box, and it’s the same per-box price ($39) as an ongoing subscription!

Hope that helps!

Hi Lindsey! Do you know if you can purchase any of these boxes as a one-off? I think they would make great Christmas gifts for my hard to shop for Dad and Brother-in-Law. Thank you for the great review 🙂
