One side of the card reveals this month’s theme, “After Party Masquerade.” I find the themes kind of iffy in terms of curation, but I also really don’t care about the themes. Please note: this is a review of the October package. This normally ships late in the month for me. Although they recently changed warehouses and I have been getting my packages a little sooner than I used to.
The other side of the card gives a little more information about the masks, including directions if they are unusual.
This month there was also a suggested calendar for when to use the masks. I did not follow it, of course (or else how would I ever get the review to you all in a reasonable period of time?) but rather used one mask every weekday. Still, it was a fun thing to include and I’d be interested to see more of these in future packages.
Esfolio Bird’s Nest Essence Mask – Value $1
The active ingredient here is swiftlet nest extract (basically bird saliva). It is supposed o be moisturizing, and I definitely thought it was. The English on the package says this is very concentrated and, to be honest, I did think this had an odor. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it wasn’t a scent I really loved, either. The mask was effective, though!
Berrisom Horror Mask – Value $3
This was good for inclusion in an October box! I think the packaging is pretty cute. This has black rice, which is full of antioxidants and also has anti-inflammatory properties. It also has your standard moisturizing polymers like hydrolyzed collagen and hyaluronic acid (these hold on to water at the surface of the skin).
This is what the “horror” mask looks like. I was sort of hoping it would be cute like the outer packaging but I guess not.
Tony Moly I’m Real Tomato Radiance Mask Sheet – Value $3
If you have been into K-beauty for very long, you will be familiar with this product line. The information card promised a mystery Tony Moly mask and I got this tomato one. I notice it is not on the Beauteque site right now so I am wondering if it is a clearance item? At any rate, it was not expired and I actually found it to be a pleasant experience. I think it is hard to assess “radiance” after only one use, but I have always found tomato to be good at clearing up my skin, so I was happy to use it for that benefit.
My Beauty Diary Caviar (Roe) Mask – Value $1
Like all My Beauty Diary masks, this was super drippy. Tons and tons of serum. The key ingredient here is sturgeon roe (caviar), which has a lot of amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids as well as antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This mask also includes a moisturizer called cosphingo that is extracted from seaweed. I do feel this was effective but I put a robe on over my shirt to control the dripping!
NOHJ Superfood Honey Mask – Value $1
This mask has both royal jelly and honey. This is a good time to mention that you should probably not expect to receive many vegan products in a K-beauty subscription. Anyway, royal jelly and honey are full of minerals and they also have antibacterial properties. Even at age 39, I sometimes still have breakouts, and I like to use honey masks on particularly bad skin days. I think this helped!
Ariul 7 Days Mask Tea Tree – Value $1.99
Tea tree oil is another excellent skincare ingredient for treating skin that is broken out. (In fact, I find it great to alternate or combine with honey.) I definitely think this helped clear up a breakout, plus it didn’t smell like tea tree oil (not everyone likes that scent).
Ariul 7 Days Mask Pomegranate – Value $1
The key ingredient here is pretty obvious. Pomegranate has lots of vitamins and antioxidants. If you get too much sun exposure, I think it is good to use antioxidant masks for their potential anti-aging effects. (Using one mask isn’t going to help if you get too much sun every day, of course. Good SPF should be part of the plan as well.) This does contain some silicones but also arnica extract which should be soothing (I thought it was!) and which may help with issues like broken capillaries.
Tsaio Stayed Up Late Mask (2 count) – Value $4.50
It is unusual to get two of the same mask in this subscription. This brand is not new to me, but this particular product line is. I thought this was soothing and moisturizing (it contains calendula, which I have always found to be soothing). It also has arnica, argan oil, soy protein, hydrolyzed rice bran, niacinamide, and just a ton of other moisturizing and redness-reducing ingredients. I used one of these after a night where I slept poorly and I don’t think it made much of a difference to my immediate appearance, but I figure the added moisture helped and that, over time, the redness-reducing ingredients will have more of a cumulative effect. If you are going to buy this one, I’d suggest a whole box so you can really assess the effects.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $16.49 for the October 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven. That is a bit lower than the cost of the box plus shipping, plus there was the one duplicate mask (not an error, it was on the information card). In fairness, I think all of the masks listed at $1 above were on sale, so the MSRP is higher. I did like the masks I received (favorites were probably the honey and tea tree ones), although this was a little bit of an off month for me overall. I think that is the first time I’ve said that, though, and I would still recommend this subscription.
What did you think of the October 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven? Do you get any K-Beauty or Asian Beauty subscriptions?
