BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog (my dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 90 pounds).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Big & Bold, 50+ pound dog, $29 a month, box.

The Subscription Box: BarkBox

The Cost: $29 per month on a month-to-month plan, save with longer subscriptions!

The information card features a few of the items. The recipes were kind of funny, too (they were jokes, not real recipes).

Barkbox Dog Waste Bags (1 roll) – Value $1

Barkbox has started custom-printing dog waste bags. This is new this month. We go through a lot of bags at my house (I also scoop kitty litter into them) so these are welcome.

Butcher’s Block Bones Beef Knuckle – Value $4

I have found we usually receive a chew or something similar in BarkBox each month. This month a lot of Butcher’s Block Bones have come through. These are made in the USA and you should probably not let your dog chew them on carpet…

Here is one of the bags (they all contain sayings with at least one word replaced with “poo” or something similar).

Apron Rope Toy – Value $10

This month’s theme related to Thanksgiving so this is appropriate (but then, Barkbox custom-makes their toys so they are always a great fit with the theme). Nyx liked this and didn’t manage to destroy it, so that is a bonus. The saying is also appropriate since Nyx’s main hobby seems to be licking anything and everything including people, the kitchen floor, etc.

Pumpkin Pie Plush Toy (heavy chewer version) – Value $9

This was a no-stuffing plush toy in the shape of a piece of pumpkin pie. Of course, Nyx thought it was great, but it is rare that she doesn’t like a toy. (I love that about her.) Surprisingly it was not the whipped cream coming off that destroyed it (that’s actually still attached), but she managed to chew a hole in one of the seams. (That’s Nyx for you…)

barkbox-large-november-2016-treats

Chloe & Cupcake Pumpkin Cheese Yums (5.5 oz) – Value $7

These are wheat free and contain pumpkin and also flax seed so they will be a good source of fiber (some dogs need fiber added to their diets and pumpkin is a good way to provide it). They are vegetarian (so good for dogs with some allergies) and made in the USA.

Natural Pup Turkey Cranberry Trainers (5.5 oz) – Value $7

Turkey and cranberry are seasonal, of course, but if your dog is prone to getting urinary tract infections, cranberry has an additional benefit as well. These are also wheat free and made in the USA.

Nyx wanted to tug the apron toy. It is actually still intact, which is pretty remarkable.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $38 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version). That is above the cost of the subscription by more than a couple of bucks and is an even better deal if you have a longer-term subscription or use a coupon. Nyx enjoyed the toys (and didn’t tear them to shreds), the treats were suitable for dogs with some allergies, and the dog waste bags are useful.

I got the large box and had a football plush instead of the pumpkin pie. It didn’t even stay unripped for one night.

Ragan,
Great pictures of Nyx! She’s so cute! My big dog ripped the rope off the apron in about 5 minutes but the apron itself is still intact. He’s really been working on those squeakers. The medium size box had a sandwich in it. The big dogs have been playing marathon tug of war with it and surprisingly they have not destroyed it yet. This month’s boxes were a win in our house!
