the-story-box-september-2016-info

Here’s the info card/monthly challenge the Story Box sent out for September. This month's focus is to help children build reading-related vocabulary, like saying "here are the words - let's read them!" or "the end!", etc. I like their info cards because not only do their ideas help keep things interesting for the children, they also help when YOU get way totally bored of the story and reading it, too.

I’m a Little Vampire by Sonali Fry – Value $4.14 on Amazon (retail price $5.99)

My copy came scuffed up, but it’s not in a spot that makes it unreadable. I’m a little disappointed but not too mad. This book is about a little boy dressed as a vampire for Halloween. The wording fits the music of the song “I’m a little teapot.” I think the art is really cute.

However, I won’t be reading this book to my son; I think it tells a poor message. The repeating theme is that he pouts if he doesn’t get candy. I’m not sure why Story Box would think this is a good pick to send out… not every book is a winner just because it’s seasonally appropriate.

Where is Baby’s Pumpkin? By Karen Katz – Value $6.45 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)

This book is cute! It’s a lift-a-flap book which has been a very popular kind of book for my 1-year-old lately. I love the little baby dressed in the cat costume too.

The book follows the baby while he or she looks for the pumpkin.

As the baby looks, it finds things like happy bats and friendly ghosts… I think this would be helpful for very little kids to learn that Halloween decorations and such aren’t necessarily scary.

Verdict: This month’s book selections weren’t a great pick for us personally. I don’t care for the Vampire book. The Baby’s Pumpkin book is cute but Halloween just isn’t a holiday where I think I’ll be excited to pull out seasonal books. Maybe, though.

I do love that The Story Box has a speech-language pathologist select the books.  I always find the info card to be really helpful, too. I think it’s good to have a little more intention during reading time with Gideon with their different suggestions each month, and they also help break up the monotony of story time and lets me go into it with a new goal or challenge.

As far as value goes, I got about $11.44 of books for $14.99 so it wasn’t a great value this month. Usually, I think there’s value in the curation and letting kids get excited about a new book and having new stories to rotate, but because the selections weren't a hit with me this month, the curation doesn't save the low value for me personally. I know there are a lot of people who's favorite holiday is Halloween and they may be really excited about these books, so my opinion is based on my own personal preferences.

I’m guessing the first book got picked because of the rhyming words.
