My box included a booklet detailing all of the items included this month.
Nama-Beer Draft Flavored Candy Tablets - Value $0.89
These were the first things I tried out of this box. They were weird, sour, and actually pretty tasty. They don’t taste anything like beer. I was reminded of sour Bottle Caps candy, but with the fizz of an alka-seltzer, with a very sweet fruit flavor. They lasted for almost 10 minutes without chewing them up.
Glamatic Lychee Flavored Gum - Value $1.99
These were not my cup of tea. The gum pieces are a decent size, but I’m not a fan of Lychee (Rose/Flower) flavored things. They were overwhelmingly rose-y.
Azuki Red-Bean Caramels - Value $2.24
I really enjoyed these caramels. They were the texture of a classic chewy caramel with just a hint of red bean flavor. Very sweet with a light salty finish. And there were a ton of them in the box!
Toppo: Creamy Milk-Filled Sticks - Value $2.69
If you’ve ever had Pocky, you know what you’re getting with Toppo. These are basically a cookie stick filled with flavored cream. They are great as a snack, though you’ll probably find yourself eating an entire pack. Conveniently, the box contains 2 foil packs, each containing 6 sticks. I really enjoyed these, though the milk-flavored cream was a little boring. I’ll probably try to hunt down the chocolate ones at some point!
Pukupuku Taiyaki Choco Wafer - Value $1.79
Finally, probably my favorite snack in the box! The fish-shaped Pukupuku wafer was great. The wafer itself is 2-sided and is filled with a light, airy freeze-dried chocolate. As soon as you bite in, the wafer dissolves, and as you chew the chocolate melts. It’s different from any chocolate treat I’ve had before, and I really liked it. The wafer is a little crumbly so I appreciated the included tray to eat over.
Verdict: This box was pretty great. I really enjoyed 4 out of 5 snacks, and I’m sure I can share the Lychee gum with someone who enjoys that flavor. The value totals $9.60, which is below the cost of the monthly box. However, since this box is all about trying new things, I think it’s totally worth it. I would have never tried most of these items if I had happened to come across them in a Japanese market, but now I’ll seek them out!
