Our Subscription Box Favorites for August!
We’re starting a new monthly post highlighting our favorite discoveries from subscription boxes! Here are our favorite items from the past month:
The Item: Vidal Gummy Chicken Feet
The Cost: Candy Club costs $27.99 + $6 shipping per month ($19.99 + $6 shipping per month with a year subscription)
Why I love it: What’s not to love about gummy chicken feet? They’re delightfully odd, and the flavor and texture are incredible. I think it would be so much fun to serve these at a halloween party.
The Item: Crema di Miele Hazelnut Honey Cream (250 g.)
The Cost: $10.99
From: Boxwalla Food
Why I love it: Crema di Miele’s Hazelnut Honey Cream is like nothing I’ve ever had before. It’s creamy, just melts in your mouth, and has tiny little bits of crunch. (Hazelnut pieces, I think.) It’s almost like spreadable candy!
The Item: Zoku Ice Cream Maker
The Cost: $25.99
Why I love it: This little single serve ice cream maker is so cool! It requires no batteries or electricity, and you just freeze the top portion until you’re ready to use it.
I’ve experimented with using it to make frozen Greek yogurt, and It’s really fun and easy to use. This is definitely one of my favorite for August, and it might even end up being one of my favorite items for 2016!
The Item: Ryan Dress by Emerald
The Cost: $62
From: Dia & Co.
Why I love it: I was completely dubious when I pulled this dress out of the box, but it totally makes me feel like an old-school movie star! This has been my summer uniform since I got it!
The Cost: $10
From: Goddess Provisions
Why I love it: FINALLY Mercury has stationed direct as of 9/22 and we are out of retrograde! Neptune has been in retrograde since July and will be through the end of the year, which is bad news for Pisceans such as myself. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been feeling it. Big Time. This little pin came just at the right time to put some levity on the situation, and to remind me that we will all get through it, and probably for the better.
The Item: Denim Jacket by INC
The Cost: $36
Why I love it: I have been looking for the perfect denim jacket for two years, and I finally have it! It’s distressed but not ridiculously destroyed, and it has just the right amount of give. It fits like a glove, too! It’s also the perfect place for my “Always in Retrograde” pin. I love it!
The Item: Ciao Churu Purees from Inaba
The Cost: $0.75
From: Cat Claws Club
Why I Love It: This has to be the best cat treat of all time in terms of generating funny pictures. Here are a few:
The Item: Categories Catty Coil
The Cost: $5.99
Why I Love It: Here’s another item chosen solely based on the awesomeness of photos I took with my cats. (Seriously, though, they had fun playing with these on their own or with me holding the springs.)
The Item: WOW Baking Company Snickerdoodle
The Cost: $1.99
This was really soft (my biggest requirement for a packaged cookie, or any cookie, really) and I never would’ve guessed it was gluten free if I hadn’t seen it on the wrapper. (I see I chose a cookie from Tea Box Express as one of my favorites last month as well…)
The Cost: $28 for 8.5 oz
From: Birchbox (Coupon: Get $5 (50 points) to spend in the Birchbox shop when you subscribe with coupon code SUBSCRIBENOW50 or Try any of these free gift with purchase coupons on orders of $35 or more!) And don’t forget your free mystery sample pack on orders of $35 or more!)
Why I Love It: I never blow dry without some kind of heat protector, and this invisible oil primer from Bumble and Bumble protects against heat and smells downright amazing. It’s also one of the few hair products that really has me noticing a difference. When I use this my hair smells great and is super soft and smooth! I’m definitely buying full size.
The Item: Greenfield Village Walnut Raisin Hobo Bread
The Cost: $9?
Why I Love It: I can’t find this for sale online, so I really don’t know how much it costs. However, I’m going to have to take a trip to Dearborn and the Henry Ford Museum to find out and buy more – this bread is delicious! This bread is inspired by hobos who crisscrossed America during the Great Depression. Greenfield Village recreated these loaves of bread using the same tin-can baking method that they used back then. The bread is already super moist and flavorful, and all the flavors and textures worked together so well. This is probably not something I would have picked up and tried on a trip to the museum but now I’ll know to pick up another loaf (or two).
The Item: Sleepyheads
The Cost: $5.08 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)
Why I Love It: This is one of my favorite books from a sub ever! I’ve been reading and researching different tips and tricks to make bedtime/night time easier and one of the big things is having “key words” and sleep cues – things they associate with going to sleep ad bed time. “Sleepyhead” is repeated on every page of the book and I think it helps build an association, and I can use it in other parts of our routine and for night wakings.
I love how dreamy the art is! One thing I especially love is that my son has come up with his own little game – the moon appears on every single page in different places and he loves pointing it out and finding it in every page! This has been one of my favorite books to read to him for bedtime ever.
The Item: Gudetama Sticker Sheet
The Cost: $3.50?
Why I love it: There is nothing not to love about this sticker sheet. Gudetama is my spirit animal. The designs are funny and adorable, plus the edges are decorated in gold foil. Perfection.
The Item: Project Juice Cashew Mylk
The Cost: $12.50
Why I love it: This cashew milk was so delicious! It tasted like cereal milk or a vegan nog. We reviewed this as a team and absolutely loved it. Now that the weather is cooling down and it finally feels like fall, we definitely need more of this.
The Item: Summer Vegetable Gnocci
The Cost: $12.50
Why I love it: This was a delicious pasta dish. I thought that the flavors might be lacking (I made mine without the cheese) but it was so flavorful. The corn was an unexpected ingredient for a pasta dish but it worked very well. Yum. I could go for a bowl of this right now.
The Item: Yellowbird Sauce – Jalepeno
The Cost: $11.99
Why I love it: This is a massive bottle of hot sauce. It’s 19.6 ounces! With that said, I really love the flavor, and think it would go great with pretty much anything. The flavor is excellent, without being too hot. It uses carrots for some natural sweetness and jalepenos for their mild heat. I love it!
The Cost: $12.00
Why I love it: This after sun mist spray smells amazing and is very soothing. I took this on my trip to Belize a few weeks ago and it provided a welcome relief to the bit of sun I got while we were snorkeling (best trip ever by the way…you should definitely try to snorkel off Ambergris Caye in Shark Ray Alley if you’re ever in Belize.)
The Item: Naive – Honey Organic 68%
The Cost: $7.99
Why I love it: This chocolate bar was really excellent. I loved the dark chocolate mixed with honey – it gave it a nice lightly sweet flavor that worked really well with the usual bitter taste of dark chocolate.
Nancy S’ Favorites:
The Item: Graymelin Rice & Sugar Soft Scrub
The Cost: $20.74
Why I love it: I can’t pick a favorite between this scrub and the Skinfood Strawberry Wash-Off one below. I love how finely grounded this scrub is. It’s gets you that satisfying exfoliation action but never feels abrasive on your skin. My face feels velvety smooth after each use.
The Cost: $12
Why I love it: First off, this sugar scrub looks and smells like strawberry compote. It even has strawberry seeds! The jam-like consistency is perfect for people who want gentle exfoliation. Plus, my face always feels plump and moisturized afterwards.
The Item: Romance Shirt
The Cost: Value $15?
Why I love it: This shirt is a play off of the “notice me senpai” meme. Since my boyfriend and I are self-professed geeks and meme lovers, this is our favorite t-shirt from Akibento.
The Item: Opposite of Far Dog Ears
The Cost: $20
Why I love it: I think dress up creative play is so important for children. I love seeing my kids act out stories, get silly and use their vivid imaginations. These ears are well made and a constant source of enjoyment.
The Item: Forager Botanicals Coconut Isle Body Oil
The Cost: $35
Why I love it: This oil works so well on damp skin. I like to rub some all over when I step out of the shower and it absorbs quickly and leaves my skin smelling great all day long.
The Item: Crescent Moon Necklace
The Cost: $34.00
Why I love it: This is my new go-to statement necklace. I keep reaching for it because it seems to elevate any outfit I pair with it, is comfortable and doesn’t look like anything else in my jewelry box.
The Item: Beaded Elephant Luggage Tag
The Cost: $15.00?
Why I love it: I think the beadwork is so bright and cheerful, plus I love all things elephants. This handmade item is unique and knowing it comes all the way from Africa makes it that much more special to me.
The Cost: $16.95
Why I love it: I wasn’t sure about this stuff when I first tried it. I make my own salt scrub which I really love but I like this one even better (which is saying a lot). The smell is nice even though it doesn’t smell a lot like strawberry and my skin is uber-soft after using it.
The Item: Weleda Calendula Intensive Skin Recovery
The Cost: $17.00
Why I love it: I wouldn’t normally spend this much money on a cream but this stuff is amazing. I have hereditary eczema in my hands and this is really helping a lot. I love it!
The Item: Kiss Me Honey Lip Balm
The Cost: $4.99
From: Satva Box
Why I Love It: I love this lip balm! It’s moisturizing and doesn’t have a waxy, sticky feel when I apply to my lips. I keep this on my night stand to moisturize my lips at night.
The Item: Wine-A-Rita Strawberry Mango Frozen Drink Mix
The Cost: $6.00
Why I Love It: It was a refreshing cool drink that came in handy on a hot August day. It was sweet and mixed well with the Pinot Grigio.
The Item: Orange Cardamom Tea Cookies
The Cost: Value $3.00
Why I Love It: I’m still on the hunt for these cookies. I enjoyed the buttery crunch and the hint of cinnamon and citrus flavors.
The Item: MeUndies Men’s Boxer Briefs
The Cost: $16 when you subscribe, regularly $24
From: MeUndies for Men
Why I love it: My husband loved these right away because of the fit and how comfortable the fabric is, and they’ve happily stood up well with machine washing and drying since. I love the bright colors!
The Item: Turtlepurl Striped Turtle Toes Yarn (75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon) in colorway Graffiti, 450 yards – $25
The Cost: $25
Why I love it: Confession time: I still haven’t finished knitting these socks since I wrote this review! But I love the colors in this yarn and it’s knitting up into a beautiful fabric. I’ve been spending more time on them this week now that the weather is getting cooler and my knitting mojo is coming back.
