Mindfulness Box for Kids sent a card outlining the box items. I appreciate this information as it helps me know if anything is missing and how to find items I’d like to purchase again.

Mindfulness is a buzzword these days! I just picked up a special issue of Time Magazine that is all about mindfulness. Just in case you haven’t heard, mindfulness is the conscious act of living in the moment. This technique is used to treat stress, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, etc but there is also research to suggest it is helpful in everyday life. I want my daughter to learn mindfulness to help with identifying and appropriately dealing with her feelings (a tough skill for a kid!).

Amy’s Light Book by Robert Nutt - Value $8.95

We read this book at bedtime last night. The pictures are lovely and the story of the little girl, Amy, finding solace in the fireflies when she was scared at night fit in very well with what I gathered is the theme this month – addressing your fears.

Here is a description of the book from Amazon:

Remember the wonder and innocence of catching fireflies as they dance through the summer nights? Here is a wonderful opportunity to share the magical experience with your children and also talk about nature, insecurities, and challenges. Amy is afraid of dark shadows in her bedroom, but notices a slight glow in the back yard. With exuberance she catches fireflies in a jar, only to find their lights go dim until they are free again--and that her fear of the dark is gone. The photo-illustrations are lifelike yet dreamy. A wonderful read-aloud.

Feelings Flip Book by HaleySez - Value $6.00

I’m a clinical social worker by day (and clearly a writer by night) so there is no shortage of “feelings talk” in our house but I love this book because it makes the talk much more fun!

Buddha - $2.07

This mini Buddha is so cute and it gave me the opportunity to discussion Buddhism with my daughter which was really interesting. Any chance to learn about something or someone new is welcome in our house!

Bella Luna Luz Awakening Aromatherapy Lip Balm - Value $3.50?

I couldn’t find this product on line but I really do like it and so does my daughter. It has a nice scent and its great protection for my lips. I tried it once and then my daughter put it in her purse. She loves it!

Yum Earth Organic Candies - Value $0.50?

Yum Earth makes great tasting candies using recognizable ingredients. We buy the lollipops usually so these were a nice change. They taste great!

Activities: Abhaya Mudra (gesture of reassurance, blessing, and protection), Super Hero Coloring Page, Courage Coloring Page

These were great activities to do with my daughter. She enjoyed coloring her Super Hero, Purpleism (“prplisum”), and I enjoyed talking about courage and facing your fears.

Verdict: Mindfulness Box for Kids is a great way to support practicing mindfulness at home with the little ones. It’s a struggle for me to practice mindfulness each day so I truly appreciate anything I can get to support that practice. I’m hoping my daughter will be better than I am due to us discussing and practicing it at a young age. The items in this box inspired some good conversations here and I happy with that. The value is at $21 plus the cost of the activities and curation. That probably puts the items at equal or a bit above the monthly cost and then of course, you must factor in shipping which is worth a lot to me since I live in the middle of nowhere!

The hamsa is Jewish and Arabic in origin, not Buddhist. While no one has a trademark on the shape of a hand, the card saying “do not fear” specifically uses the word “hamsa”. FYI to any Mindfulness Box for Kids employees reading this.

Many early cultures adopted the eye as an icon for their protection, others used Hamsa and so over time the most popular universal symbol became an eye placed in the palm of a hand. Hamsa hand bracelet or hand of fatima necklace is worn by people who have the faith in a “Supreme Power” and find themselves at a cross-road in life. They could follow different religions; some of them could be Jewish, Muslim others could be advocates of Christianity or Buddhism. Irrespective of their religious beliefs, they would find themselves in a common ground as far as having faith in a Higher Power is concerned.
