Julep Maven is a monthly nail polish and beauty subscription box. They make all their own products, so subscribers get a good value each month – over $40 retail worth of product for $24.99 a month.

And, if you sign up for 3-months up front, you get the $19.99 rate.

Each month Julep releases a new collection on the 20th, and you can decide which box you want, you can upgrade to the entire collection, or you can skip that month.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Clean Slate Polish Remover Single-Use Pad Kit – Retail Value $14 each

I received two of these in my mystery box.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-clean-slate1

In order to be able to use add-on items with the coupon code, I first added the mystery box to my cart, then started the checkout process. I then added the Clean Slate polish remover kit to my cart. This was priced at $4.99 as an add-on. Next, I clicked back to the part of the website where you can do more shopping. Then I went back into my cart and increased the number of polish remover kits in my cart to 2 instead of 1. I then added my coupon code OCT10. The coupon code subtracted $9.98 (the price of the 2 polish remover kits) from my order.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-clean-slate2

Doing this allowed me to add 2 Clean Slate polish remover kits which would normally retail for $28 total to my mystery box at no additional cost.

These kits each contain 10 individually wrapped, disposable, pre-soaked felt pads for polish removal. These are great for travel and I have found them to work well on all polish except for glitters. I first tried these when a forum friend included a couple in a swap with me as an extra and I really like them!

Let’s dive into the box itself!

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-glycolic-scrub1

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-glycolic-scrub2

Brilliance Glycolic Hand & Body Scrub – Retail Value $32

Julep says this has “natural apricot seed microbeads and a potent concentration of glycolic acid that instantly reveals brighter, smoother skin.” They also note that this “product contains an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn.”

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-glycolic-scrub3

I have used it a few times so far on my hands and I do think they look brighter somehow. They definitely are softer and smoother. I have not tried it on the rest of my body yet, but will do so soon. So far I am a fan! The scrub is paraben and sulfate free. It has a foil seal.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-orbital-eyeshadow1

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-orbital-eyeshadow2

Julep Orbital Eyeshadow – Retail Value $18

This eyeshadow was in Terra which Julep describes as a “Terracotta with Silver Pearlescence.”

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-orbital-eyeshadow3

The eyeshadow is deeply pigmented and can be worn all day. It blends and builds easily as well. Julep now offers this in 9 different colors. I have tried some of the other colors before and I like the formula. It is paraben and sulfate free. Here is it swatched:

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-orbital-eyeshadow4

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-nailcolor1

The rest of the mystery box contained 4 nail colors. That photo is very accurate regarding the true color of all 4 of these nail polishes.

At first glance, I thought it looked like a kind of odd combination of colors, but I realized while swatching and playing around them that these are actually well-suited for Halloween costumes, parties, dressing up, etc.

Julep spoiled that the following 2 colors would be in the box:

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena1

Julep Nail Color in Xena Retail Value $14 (glow-in-the-dark glitter top coat)

This is a glitter topcoat that can also be worn alone. Must-see action shots below!

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-johnny1

Julep Nail Color in JohnnyRetail Value $14 (true black crème)

I don’t know if this was named after Johnny Depp, but it think it is extremely likely.

The mystery box also contains:

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-laure1

Julep Nail Color in LaureRetail Value $14 (blazing red-orange stardust)

I think this is the first time I have tried a stardust polish from Julep. I love it! I will definitely be trying more ASAP.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-virginia1

Julep Nail Color in VirginiaRetail Value $14 (mahogany iridescent molten)

To me, this has more red in it than I would have expected based on the description.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-nailcolor3-swatched

All Julep nail color uses a 5-free, vegan-friendly formula that is breathable and includes strengthening ingredients.

Here are all the colors in different lighting:

Okay, I know I promised must-see action shots on Xena.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena2

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena-glow-in-the-dark1

That is Xena on its own. No tricks here, folks.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena-glow-in-the-dark2

My kids think this looks like a lightsaber. My daughters wanted in.

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena-glow-in-the-dark3

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena-glow-in-the-dark4

My son wanted in (on his toes only)!

julep-bewitched-glow-mystery-box-2016-xena-glow-in-the-dark5

Verdict: This mystery box cost $24.99 and promised $100+ worth of beauty and nail products. The retail value of the 2 beauty items and 4 polishes in the mystery box itself add up to $106 (or $84.80 if you are a Julep Maven and can enjoy the discount). Plus, I was able to use the promo code to get another $28 worth of polish remover at no additional cost. Either way, I think this is an awesome value and personally feel that Xena alone is worth the price of admission. As of right now, the mystery box is still available, but it won’t be for long.

I’m very happy with this mystery box! What do you think of the Bewitched Glow Mystery Box?

Oh man. I didn’t go for this mystery box because I have so many polishes. I got the Casper last year which was supposed to be glow in the dark but never was. If anyone has any of these items to swap or sell let me know. None of them are on the swap site :-/

Chris, is there any method to use the coupons to discount the add-ons in your regular monthly box?

chris

Nope. 🙂

I wanted to try Julep and so I bought this box. I’m so glad I did, I love the hand scrub, it’s the smell I like. It reminds me of a scrub Estee Lauder made about 15 years ago that I loved so much that they discontinued, so I bought another one already! I liked everything thing in the box except the orange polish. I hated it so I gave it away. I’m not crazy about the orange eye shadow but have worn it twice now, it’s fine but not something I would buy, I feel there is alot of fall out. I joined Julep after getting this box, and cancelled the day before we could pick the stuff. I couldn’t justify only three things for twenty bucks. So I’ll stick with the mystery boxes and just buying from the web site. In the last two week I’ve accumulated about 20 polishes, I guess that means I like Julep.

The thing I love about Julep is the option to customize your entire box each month, the option to skip, and the Jules point system. I don’t usually go for their mystery boxes, very hit and miss for me. I hate orange so this one was an easy pass! I did get one mystery box I loved though, last summer I think, they had an ocean/mermaid theme with blue polishes I adored, so sometimes they do manage to woo me lol!

This was my first ever purchase from Julep, and i absolutely loved it!!! I’m wearing Laure now, and i also want more Stardust polishes. It’s gorgeous! And i couldn’t believe how much the glow came from the glow in the dark polish! It actually freaked me out the other night when i crawled into bed half asleep and caught my nails out of the corner of my eye. Totally forgot what was on my fingers and startled myself! lol

Glad to hear you are loving Julep so far! It is one of my favorite subscription boxes! 🙂 The glowing polish freaked me out the first night I forgot I had it on, too! Xena also has pretty impressive staying power. It is still glowing and I think I am on day 11ish now…. It is chipping on the edges for me, though, so I’ll have to re-do it before Halloween.

Luna

Darn, after seeing this review I now wish I had purchased this mystery box. 🙁 I think I was so focused on the two spoilers (which I only felt ‘meh’ about) that I failed to read the full details to see how much product I could get. Oh well…. I hope everybody else has fun with their boxes! 🙂

chris

Hopefully, they will do another mystery box soon! 🙂

Fantastic review Chris!! The glow in the dark shots were incredible photos…good job!

Thanks, Traci! My husband took those! My kids and I are having fun with that polish. 🙂

EC

I miss the days when my boys were little and interested in painting their toes like their sisters. That doesn’t happen so much now that they’re 14 and almost 18, lol. Not that my husband was a fan of me doing painting the boys’ nails at any age! Cherish the time while they’re little; they grow up in the blink of an eye. I’m “only” 40 and losing my first birdie from the nest in 7 months.

Reply ButtonReply

chris

EC, my son will only once in a while want to try clear polish because he wants in on the fun when the girls are painting our nails. He made an exception for this because it is so cool. <3

I absolutely LOVE that hand scrub. It worked magic on my hands (made them so incredibly smooth feeling & looking)! Definitely heed the warning about using sunscreen, as I didn’t wear sunscreen once during the summer, and while driving, my left hand was directly exposed to the sun, and I swear it felt like little needles constantly pricking my hand. It didn’t feel that great. So, I basically had to drive the rest of the day with one hand, as I continued to attempt to hide my other hand from the sun. Afterwards, I ALWAYS made sure to wear sunscreen, and they never felt irritated again, even exposed directly to the sun.

chris

Wow, glad you love it and thanks for the warning! 🙂

I did not get this box because I have so many Julep polishes and beauty items I was sure I’d get all repeats. I also have a glow in the dark polish of theirs from last year that really didn’t glow much. But this box looks amazing (and that glow polish) and I’m seriously kicking myself now for not getting it. I LOVE the glycolic scrub and it’s rarely available for monthly box selection and when it is it’s the smaller version. Going to have to try to swap for it now.

Reply ButtonReply

chris

Good luck, Miriam! I was surprised how large the tube of scrub is! And I hope they bring back the polish soon!

Sarah Steil

I can’t find it either. Im wanting the glow in the dark polish!

Johnny is named after Johnny Cash (the original Man in Black).

April

That’s what I was going to post lol.

Ohh, yes! Good call, thank you! 🙂

Emilia

Glad I didn’t order it. Nothing exciting.

Reply ButtonReply

Steph M.

Same here, and I already have the scrub from a previous mystery box of theirs. I’ve used it on my face too and really like it. No irritation and leaves my skin soft and feeling moisturized.

Reply ButtonReply

Ragan

I got this, but I am kind of regretting it. I am mostly into Julep for polish, not beauty products, and the two polishes that were not spoilered were repeats for me.

Probably a sign that I should stop ordering mystery boxes…especially with the number of times I’ve ordered the full polish collection already this year.

Heather

I just bought the box this morning after waivering all week. I really wanted Xena. Glad I pulled the trigger.

Reply ButtonReply

Kelly

I’m pretty sure the mystery box ended yesterday. I wasn’t interested but I want that Xena polish! : (

Reply ButtonReply

Kelly

I looked and Xena wasn’t an option as part of the Beauty Box options so I emailed to ask them if they will be making it available. It never hurts to ask.

Reply ButtonReply

Ragan

They make a lot of stuff available during the holiday shopping season that is hard to find the rest of the year.

Lisa

I think the Mystery Box promo ended yesterday… I couldn’t find it on Julep’s site.

Reply ButtonReply

chris

It was still available earlier this morning when I checked less than an hour ago. But it seems like they just pulled it, unfortunately!

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

I can’t find the mystery box on their site or Xena nail polish 🙁 Is the mystery box for Mavens only?

Reply ButtonReply

chris

You are correct! It is gone now. It was available to anyone, not just Mavens. I checked less than an hour ago and it was still available at that point so they must’ve just pulled it. Hopefully, they will bring Xena back by itself at least sometime soon!

Jennifer

Great review on the glow-in-the-dark polish! I love it! I won’t be getting the mystery box, though. That hand scrub doesn’t agree with my skin.

Sara

The glow in the dark polish is awesome!!!
