This month Girls Can! Crate celebrates Grace Murray Hopper, the “curious coder.” This card shows what is included in the box and gives ideas to parents for continuing the learning with their child(ren) after the box activities are completed. The “Take it further” section for parents is one of my favorite aspect of this subscription. They always give great suggestions!

Grace Murray Hopper invented COBOL, the first computer language using words instead of numbers. She was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the highest non-combat award anyone can receive!

The 20-page activity book included in each box is amazing! Girls Can! Crate contains 2-3 great activities plus this book which is full of other things to do with your child. Girls Can! Crate is one of the best subscription values I’ve seen for kid’s activities!

Activity #1: Code Necklace

The first activity was for Cira to make a necklace spelling her name out in BINARY CODE!  My husband and I should have stolen this activity from her since we were so excited about it. What a great idea! I loved talking to Cira about computer languages. I hope this box and our conversations are expanding the possibilities for her future. How cool would that be?

Activity #2: Coding Game

The second activity was a game where one player sets the pieces (start, finish, and obstacles) and the other leaves a code (forward, backward, left and right tiles) for how to complete the puzzle. If the code is correct, the coder wins, if not, then the other player wins.  We played the game twice and then moved to the more difficult options.  This game is similar to our Race to the Treasure game. It’s really good for addressing problems solving skills!

Girls Can! Crate also included this adorable Grace Murray Hopper military hat and a paper computer keyboard to be used to “build” your own cardboard computer (instructions are in the booklet).

Verdict: This was a great month for Girls Can! Crate! Curiosity is such a worthwhile trait for adults to recognize and support in children and Grace Murray Hopper was curious and tenacious in an extremely male dominated field. I found this month very inspiring but I think all Girls Can! Crates are well thought out and worth every penny spent. There is so much to do and learn from this box! Girls Can! Crate has a worthwhile mission along with incredible execution, value, and design. This box has a bit of everything I look to when spending money on activities for my child: fun, education, empowerment, interest, longevity, and quality. Plus, they donate 10% of the proceeds from each crate to organizations such as Girls Education and Mentoring Services (GEMS), Days for Girls, and SheHeroes. This subscription is a winner!

Carrie

Admiral “Amazing Grace” Hopper is one of my personal heroes! This looks like an awesome sub this month, wish I had it for myself.
