craft-beer-club-september-2016-flyers

The Craft Beer Club includes flyers that provide information about the brewing companies and beers featured in the month’s box. This month’s box includes beers from Argus Brewery and Diamond Bear Brewery.

On the reverse, the flyers always include “Food for your Brew” recipes and some fun trivia.

Diamond Bear Brewing Company is based in Little Rock, Arkansas and they’ve been brewing beer since 2000.

Diamond Bear Brewing Company Rocktoberfest (6.1% ABV)

Some people might ring in the fall with a Pumpkin Spice Latte, but, for me, nothing says fall like Oktoberfest! This malt-forward beer is brewed in the classic Oktoberfest style, and it definitely has that iconic German Oktoberfest taste. Craft Beer Club describes the flavor as “malty… [with] notes of caramel, herbal hops, toast, and citrus.”

Diamond Bear Brewing Company Paradise Porter (6.2% ABV)

I love dark beers, so I’m thrilled to see a porter in this month’s box! It’s very dark in color, almost black actually, and it has flavors of coffee, chocolate, toasty malt, and caramel. There’s a nice level of bitterness (from the addition of Glacier and Amarillo hops), which gives this beer a crisp finish.

The second brewery featured this month is Chicago’s Argus Brewery, an operation that was founded in 2009 and is run by a beer-loving father & son team.

Argus Easy Rider Pale Ale (5% ABV)

This “easy” pale ale is made with only one variety of hop and one variety of malt, is a “tribute to smooth, balanced simplicity.” The flavor is really great. It’s nicely bitter with some fruitiness that reminds me of peaches. It’s interesting without being too complex, the type of beer I want to sit down with after a long, hard day.

Argus Clyde’s Ale ESB (5.5% ABV)

The second beer selected from Argus is an ESB, or Extra Special Bitter, a strong ale that originated in Britain. To maintain the traditional flavor of ESB, Argus has crafted this beer using British malts, hops, and yeast. This is definitely a flavorful brew! It’s hoppy and full of malty flavors. I really like it.

And he’s a shot that better shows off the color of each brew. (Clockwise from top left, you’re looking at the Porter, Oktoberfest, ESB, and Pale Ale.)

Verdict: I always look forward to my monthly shipment from The Craft Beer Club. I really enjoyed the beers featured in this box, and I think the Oktoberfest and Porter are my favorites. When it comes to value, the cost of each Craft Beer Club box breaks down to just over $3 per beer. While that’s not exactly a steal, I think the price is fair— especially since most of the beers featured in the subscription aren’t available nationwide. I love the convenience of having craft beers sent directly to my door, and it’s so much fun learning about new craft breweries every month!

Seems like $3 a beer is really reasonable. Our local bars charge $4 plus for Miller Lite and $8 plus for any type of craft beer.

This was my least favorite month so far. The porter was the only one we liked, but still found it lacking in flavor and body. I’m not even sure if I can cook with the two brews from Argus. Both of them tasted to me like aluminum with undertones of dust. I’m hoping October brings better beer.
