The Vegan Cuts Snack Box is a monthly subscription box full of vegan and natural food products and snacks. Many of the items will be gluten free, but this box is not a dedicated gluten free box.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The box came with this information car detailing the items in the box.

There was also a coupon for a free bag of Beanitos chips (greater than 5 ounce size, too).  I will use this so that adds a little value to the box right there.

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-bars

Nutiva Organic Hazelnut Spread with Cocoa (0.78 oz) – Value $1.30

I learned my lesson last time I tried to make a sandwich with chocolate flavored hazelnut spread I got in a subscription box – I don’t like eating chocolate sandwiches! So, I am still searching for the perfect thing to use this on. Suggestions are welcome.

Mediterra Savory Bar with Sundried Tomato and Basil (1.4 oz) – Value $2

In theory, there is nothing wrong with a savory bar. Plus, tomato and basil go well together. And this had a nice texture. But. It had a lot of brown rice syrup in it. And that is basically sugar. However, sugar + tomato and basil does not go so well together. I think this would be better if it didn’t have the overwhelmingly sweet taste.

Kashi Peanut Hemp Crunch Bar (1.59 oz) – Value $1.54

I believe we’ve gotten these in Vegan Cuts before. I do like them, though, and for some reason, Kashi is a brand I often overlook when purchasing snacks, so this is a good reminder.

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-beanitos

Beanitos White Bean Chips in Garden Fresh Salsa (0.7 oz) – Value $0.47

Beanitos are a subscription box standby. I do like them, though, and this flavor was new to me.

Joe’s Oat Patties in Portabella Mushroom (2.6 oz) – Value $2 (?)

This is an interesting idea. You can make a savory patty out of oats. However, this small package is supposed to make two servings and it just really doesn’t seem like enough food for that. Also, we couldn’t really get these to hold together. This is the sort of recipe I’d really like to put an egg in as binder, but of course that wouldn’t work for vegans. So if anyone has any tips on how to make patties hold together, please share. (I found a place you may be able to buy this online, and I have linked to it, but it is not clear what the full size package weight is, so I have guessed at the value. The package I received was clearly marked “sample.”)

Home Free Lemon Burst Mini Cookies (1 oz) – Value $1.10

These are free of most major allergens. But they are still whole grain (yay) and they actually weren’t bad. The lemon flavor worked well with the crunchy texture.

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-cocomels

Cocomels Coconut Milk Caramels (5 count) – Value $1.63

I love these. They are almost as good as “real” (dairy) caramels. I’m never sad to see them in a subscription box.

Tsubi Soup Vegan Miso (1 serving) – Value $3

I had this at work so no photos of it prepared (I don’t have a smart phone). I have to be honest, I am not the biggest brothy soup fan, and this wasn’t quite as full of tofu/etc. as the picture on the package would have you believe. But if you have recently become a vegan or vegetarian and are missing Asian dishes, it is nice to know this exists.

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-pantry

Healthee USA Organic Turmeric Brown Rice (7.6 oz) – Value $2.99

This was pretty good. We eat a lot of brown rice and will probably continue just cooking it as usual, but if you want a quick lunch or something, this with an Indian entrée (see below) could work. Also it is shelf stable.

Loma Linda Vegetarian Taco Filling (5 oz) – Value $1.32

This is made by Atlantic Natural Foods; many of their products have appeared in the Vegan Cuts snack box in the past. I honestly can’t tell how this is different from previous incarnations of their taco filling (I once bought a case of one of their others on sale on Amazon). You do need to supplement with beans or vegetables or something if you want to make a meal.

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-ricecooked

Here is half the rice, cooked, next to a Tasty Bite spinach dal entrée (we decided to go all out with our microwave dinner…). I split this with my husband but probably there was really only one portion of rice in the package, even though there were two servings.

Here is a taco with the taco filling, some vegetables, and salsa. (In keeping with the spirit of this subscription box, I photographed this before I put cheese on it…)

vegan-cuts-snack-september-2016-popcorners

Popcorners in Carnival Kettle (1 oz) – Value $0.60

I had these in a recent Love with Food box. This snack has a lot of promise in terms of texture. I am not a huge fan of the Carnival Kettle flavor, though. I just don’t really want that hint of sweetness in a chip with this texture. I would still be interested in trying other flavors, though.

Calnaturale Svelte Enjoy Yourself Cappuccino Flavored Organic Protein Shake (11 fl oz) – Value $2.71

This is another product I’m familiar with from subscription boxes. I did try this in the past, and the coffee flavor is not super strong. But I (really) hate coffee so I gave this one to my husband since he actually drinks coffee, and he seemed to enjoy it.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $20.66 for this month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box.  That is definitely better than last month and, if you include the value of the free bag of Beanitos you can get with the coupon, it is slightly higher than the cost of the box. I discovered a lot of new products this month. I sort of wish there had been more snacks and fewer pantry items (I do like getting pantry items, but there were basically four this time, counting the patties, soup, taco filling, and rice, and a lot of the snacks were repeats for me), but overall, the value was definitely there and it is convenient for me to receive a food box and not have to read ingredients labels for once!

What do you think of the September 2016 Vegan Cuts Snack Box?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I’m sure I have a few of those things around the house (apples, anyway, and maybe some bread I can toast).

The chocolate spread on apples makes for a nice dessert or snack.

The chocolate hazelnut spreads are good with graham crackers, shortbread cookies, pretzels, and strawberries. I’ll also sometimes dip peanut butter cookies in it if I want something really sweet.

The chocolate hazelnut spread is delicious on a shortbread cookie,Buttermilk waffle or pancakes.

Nutella on graham crackers is one of my go to sweet snacks

I use “chocolate hazelnut spread” to make really delicious and moist brownies, but there may not be enough in that package. Also – high sugar content. I agree with the previous poster that dipping pretzels in it is A+. It helps cut the sweetness.

It’s not hugely different than a sandwich, but you might try the spread on toast. I love nutella on toast, but the thought of eating it on untoasted bread as a sandwich is quite unappealing. You might find the same thing. Alternately, maybe try it on pretzels. I like both nutella and peanut butter on pretzels as a snack, though that might be a little more of a pain with a foil packet than with a jar.
And for anyone else thinking about the popcorners, I got a bag of them in degustabox and loved them. I love getting kettle corn at the farmers market (by a big franchise company but shhhh) and this was basically that, but with a slightly more crunchy texture? or something like that. Anyways, for me they were really good, but, unsurprisingly, taste opinions vary 🙂
