This month, the country featured was Brazil. The glossy paged booklet that they send is always a fun read, and they also include hints for the country they are featuring next month!
Brazilian Coffee Candy
This coffee candy is pretty smooth and slightly sweet. I don't generally eat coffee flavored things, because of the coffee breath issue, but these were very good!
Butter Toffee Mousse de Maracuja
These are chewy, butter toffee candies with a passion fruit mousse center. I really wasn't a fan of the passion fruit flavor mixed with butter toffee here. The butter toffee part was delicious, but I didn't think the caramel flavor went well with the passion fruit mousse.
Pacoquinha de Amendoim by Yoki
These are exactly like the little round mazapan Mexican candies - they taste the same, and have the same moisture sucking qualities. I had to take a drink immediately after eating this...these aren't my favorite.
Serenata de Amor Bon Bons by Garoto
These little bon bons are delicious. They are chocolate covered wafer bon bons, filled with a cashew cream. I enjoyed these quite a bit!
Bis Wafers by Lacta
These were great! They are very similar to a Kit Kat, in that they are wafer cookies covered in chocolate. I enjoyed these quite a bit.
Frutabella Goiabada
These bars have just two ingredients: guava and sugar. When you first pull it out, it doesn't look super appetizing, but it was delicious! I love guava, and this is something I would eat regularly if I was able to find it here in the states.
Bananinha Cremosa
This fruit bar also has very few ingredients: banana, sugar, and something that looks like a preservative. I wasn't a huge fan of this bar; if you like bananas a lot though, you might just love it.
Pao de Mel
These little cookies are a spiced, honey bread covered in chocolate. It tasted quite a bit like the soft gingerbread you can find in Germany - I did enjoy them, but they are very dry - be sure to have some coffee or tea nearby.
Torcida Pimenta Mexicana
Honestly, these were hands down the best thing in this box. They are so delicious. The texture is like a crunchy pillow, and the flavor is out of this world. I'm pretty sure it's jalapeño and cheese, but whatever it is, it is the stuff dreams are made of.
Yokitos Bacon
I had a few friends try these and the verdict was mixed. Two loved them and two hated them. I didn't like the smell - it was a bit maple syrupy. They said they were similar to chicharrones with maple syrup flavoring.
Pipoca Vovozinha Caramelizada
This caramel popcorn was mediocre at best. It was all stuck together and I think a bit stale. It is supposedly super popular in Brasil though, so maybe I just got a bad batch.
Biscoito Polvilho
The description of this in the Universal Yums booklet is kind of funny. It says something to the effect of "they're not the worst thing we've ever tried..." I had 5 people try these: myself and four friends. Everyone except for me disliked them. I didn't mind them that much, but I also would never reach for these as a snack. They're fairly tasteless and would definitely benefit from some flavoring.
Verdict: I always enjoy my Universal Yums boxes - I love trying new snacks from other countries, and seeing what I'm missing out on here in the States. This box was filled with mostly delicious things, and having a few of my friends try everything was super fun. I might just keep doing that! As far as value goes, I never do a value judgement since it's practically impossible to find these snacks locally. With that said, I do find that the value is pretty consistent to the cost of the box.
