Here’s the info card/monthly challenge The Story Box sent out for August. It encourages parents to point out things happening on the pages and discuss them, and to use different voices and such. Not only does this help keep things interesting for the children, it also helps when YOU get way totally bored of the story and reading it, too.

Red Bird Friends Come in Different Sizes – value: $5.95

This is a colorful and cute book to remind kids that friends and good people can look different in any way, shape, and form.

There’s lots of different animals and good qualities to all of them shown throughout the book.

Glasses to Go – value: $6.57 on Amazon (retail price $7.99)

This book is all about the different kinds of glasses and different people they belong to!

The inside of the book has a pocket, and inside there are some cardboard punch-out sheets with different kinds of glasses. Throughout the book there are spots where you can place the glasses on the different people!

The illustrations are so cute! Each face on the right has a little slot where you can slide the cardboard glasses into.

I think this book is cute and would be really fun for a kid who gets his or her first pair of glasses. I really like the idea but I wish the glasses were plastic. These cardboard glasses really don’t seem like they’ll last long, especially since the book is supposed to be for kids. Just separating these birthday glasses from their surrounding cardboard caused some damage to them.

Verdict: This month’s books seem to focus on inclusion and accepting differences! Teaching kids that friends come in all shapes and sizes and a book that helps kids have fun with glasses can be really useful in many ways for children.

I love that The Story Box has a speech-language pathologist select the books. I always find the info card to be really helpful, too. I think it’s good to have a little more intention during reading time with Gideon with their different suggestions each month, and they also help break up the monotony of story time and lets me go into it with a new goal or challenge.

As far as value goes, I got about $12.50 of books for $14.99 so it wasn’t great as far as savings goes, unfortunately. That’s a little disappointing, especially because the glasses book won’t last long with any kind of regular use from kids. However, I do also think there’s value in the curation and letting kids get excited about a new book and having new stories to rotate.

Let me get this straight. Boys can be aviators, race car drivers, and scientists. Girls walk the red carpet, use opera glasses, and blow out candles on a cake. Way to go! We can’t professionally gender bias too early! Can’t get those stereotypes in place too soon!
