This month’s recipe is Cookies & Creme Donuts! I received a full-color booklet with detailed recipe instructions.

The ingredients needed for every step of the recipe are clearly outlined. Color pictures accompany every step.

SoBakeable recipes are designed “for the beginner to the advanced baker.” Full disclosure: I bake professionally, so I’m definitely in the advanced category. To help get a beginner’s take on this recipe, I enlisted the help of a non-baker friend. I brought this box over to her house, and we made the donuts together in her kitchen.

(SoBakeable also has an app available that helps demonstrate the techniques used in their recipes. I think this is a great way to help support beginners who may be unfamiliar with things like piping.)

My box also contained a handwritten note— a nice touch!

Everything needed for the recipe was individually packaged and clearly labeled.

To begin, my friend and I made the donut batter & piped it into the provided donut mold. (I’ve never seen a mold like this before, and I think it’s super cute!) We baked them at 450 degrees, and they took about 7 minutes to cook.

Since this kit only included one donut mold, we baked off the donuts in two batches. While the donuts baked, we melted white chocolate and created these chocolate swipes. Each swipe got topped with some cookie crumbs, and we placed the swipes in the freezer to set while we finished the donuts.

sobakeable-september-2016-glaze

The glaze was a combination of Oreo cookie filling, milk, butter, and some provided glaze mix. Both my friend and I thought it was really creative to incorporate the cookie filling into the donut glaze!

We dipped the donuts and then piped chocolate frosting (made from frosting mix, butter, and milk) onto each one. We each piped about half of the donuts, and had fun mixing up the designs.

We then added some fancy sprinkles on top. SoBakeable has included these sprinkles before, and I’m a big fan. They’re beautiful, and the larger ones are filled with chocolate. (They taste a little like Sixlets!)

So Bakeable recommended topping the donuts with the white chocolate swipes, but we actually preferred the way the donuts looked without them.

My friend and I were thrilled with how cute these mini donuts came out, and we were really excited to try them. Unfortunately, we both thought they fell a little short of flavor. The glaze and chocolate frosting were both yummy, but the donuts themselves were just so so. The flavor of the cake was a tad bland, the texture was a little disappointing, too. We both agreed that they lacked the soft outer crunch and fluffy middle of a typical fried cake donut. I’ve never baked donuts before, so perhaps the texture wouldn’t be a problem for fans of baked vs. fried donuts, but neither my friend nor I was that keen on them. We each ate one donut and didn’t go back for seconds.

Verdict: Sadly, this box was a bit of a miss for me. The donuts were beautiful, but the flavor fell short. This is my third box from SoBakeable, though, and I have to say that it’s the first one that hasn’t wowed me. (I loved both my first and second box.) Flavor aside, the donuts were a lot of fun to make, and the recipe was well-written and easy to follow. A three month subscription breaks down to $33 per box, which is on the pricey side for a box like this. (For comparison, Treatsie’s baking box, which I reviewed last month, is only $19.95 per month.) The last couple of boxes felt like they were worth it to me, but, unfortunately, this one missed the mark.

I think they could easily add value to the subscription by providing more recipes. I don’t have a lot of stuff in my kitchen so I think the donut mold is cool but what else am I supposed to do with it? Give me tools, give me the ingredients for one recipe and give me at least 3-5 more detailed recipes either printed or online to give me some more ideas. The value would be better for me as novice to get more use out of the provided tools.

This is really cute and looks fun to do a with a friend. That said, I would never pay for it. You could buy all the ingredients and other supplies for the price. I do see that they spend a lot of time with packaging and presentation, which is nice.

Those were some expensive doughnuts!
$33 is way too much for one recipe/dessert.

Do they give you a recipe that you can then duplicate if you want or is it a one time thing? Are the other baking kits a one time thing as well?

Hi Catherine! Since so many of the ingredients come pre-portioned and pre-mixed, the recipes really are a one time thing. That being said, the techniques and ideas could certainly be repeated using a similar recipe and your own ingredients.
