Shtrands Subscription Box Review + Coupon – August 2016

SHTRANDS is a subscription box that sends you customized hair care regimens from a team of hairstylists and cosmetic chemists every two months. The hair care regimen includes 4 full sized cleansing, conditioning and styling products. Products included in the box should last you two months. At any point in the subscription you can choose to receive a completely new regimen or a mix of new products and ones you have already received and loved.

FYI – Before SHTRANDS sent me the first box to review I filled out a hair questionnaire. Because my items are based off of my personal preferences, my Shtrands delivery will probably be different than others. After receiving you receive your first box they let you provide feedback and you can get the same products or different ones.

Each box comes with a really nice, durable canvas bag. It has loop handle on the left side and a zipper top. It’s nice and big and would be perfect for traveling and organizing. I’m so excited to have a bunch of these.

Each box includes an info card. The handwriting is a nice touch that makes it feel personal, but part of me wishes it were typed just for ease of reading. I could make it out, though, so it was fine.


Teadora Miracle Shampoo & Conditioner Set, Rainforest After Dark – 12 oz each, value: $52

I can happily say that this set is my favorite shampoo & conditioner I’ve received in a subscription box ever. These are fantastic and work seriously well. I really noticed a difference after one wash and I look forward to how my hair will be after each shower. This set really softens my hair significantly but makes it feel stronger, and it looks shinier too. I felt like I had TV commercial hair.

The fragrance is light and different than most shampoos and conditioners I’ve used. Along with hydrating, softening, and making your hair shinier, these also prolong the life of hair color, help with frizz control, help protect against UV Damage, and have anti-inflammatory ingredients to support scalp health.


TONI&GUY Casual Sea Salt Texturizing Spray – 6.8 oz, value: $14.95

I tried this sea salt spray a couple years ago thanks to Birchbox, and I like it! I have been playing with sea salt/texturizing sprays lately, trying to figure out how to get them to work for me. This one smells great and hasn’t left my hair crunchy.

Abba Smoothing Blow Dry Lotion – 5.1 oz, value: $18

This smoothing blow dry lotion is very thin and a little goes a long way. It has key botanicals of barley proteins, mango extract, and ProQuinoa Complex and helps tame frizz and enhance shine for all hair types. I’ve loved using this! It detangles pretty easily too, but I still like using a heat-protecting detangler too. I’ve notice a serious increase in the hydration and shine of my hair with this.

Verdict: This was a great first impression for me from SHTRANDS! I’ve never seen such a dramatic difference in my hair from a new hair regimen, so it’s easy to say that I’m definitely happy with this box. I’m also happy with the value – everything adds up to $91.95. Plus, I’m really happy with the practical and roomy canvas pouch they come in.

  1. I’d like to sign up, but their website is severely dampening my enthusiasm. I selected one plan and added it to my cart but then changed my mind and selected a different one. Problem is that there is no way to remove the unwanted sub from my cart! After trying this several times, including just starting again on a different page, I now have a crazy number of subs in my cart. It’s a silly oversight in designing their site, but very frustrating to potential. customers!!

      Im the founder of Shtrands. I just checked the site by myself and got the same thing…yeah its damn frustrating. Sorry but we were not aware of this problem. Ill make sure it will be fixed.

      What I did to get rid of that, I used a different browser, or you can just clean the history for today (or even for the lat hour) in your browsing. Or just switch devices.

      Sorry again, I had no idea about that. You are the first one to let me know and thank you for that.

  3. I live Shtrands so far! One of my Teadora pumps didnt work and they sent me another one within a day! Awesome customer service! They didn’t send me a follow up questionnaire like I’ve been hearing that most people got though and it’s almost time for another box to be shipped to me? I hope I don’t receive the same products twice just because I didn’t get a survey. I really liked the stuff I got but I’m a hair junkie and wanna try new stuff 🙂

  4. Talk about box envy! I am obsessed with my hair and hair care products – to the point of my hairstylist asking me if I’ve tried anything new and fantastic LOL. But $60 a pop is a little high for me – I’ll have to use up some products first then re-evaluate.

  5. I LOVE Shtrands- they have the best customer service and clearly care about subscribers. I am currently unsubscribed because I accrued too much shampoo, partly because the frequency ended up too frequent and partly because I was also doing ipsy and Birchbox so I’d get hair products from those too. But I can’t wait until I use up everything I’ve got and can resubscribe- I’ve actually been using more shampoo at a time than I really need to just so I can get back to this sooner 🙂

  6. Does anyone know how this compares to the other hair care subscription which also customizes? Can’t recall the name of it.

    • I’m thinking you’re either referring to eSalon or Latherology. Those are the only customizable ones I can think of off the top of my head. I’ve never subscribed to either of those two, so I can’t help with the comparison, but I thought I’d try to help out in coming up with the names you might be referring to. 🙂

    • I subbed to esalon for shampoo & conditioner and I hated it. Got the volumizing products. The shampoo made my hair feel like straw! The conditioner helped with that, but I didn’t think that taking the texture to straw and back each time I washed was good for my hair. When I called customer support they ended up lecturing me on how to wash my hair! Really?? Not helpful!! They also sent me a free product with my shipment – a temporary root cover packaged like mascara. The color was not a good match for me, but even more importantly, the wand you use to apply the coverage was impossible to use. It just tangled up in my hair. Needless to say I cancelled. But I’m definitely looking at subscribing to this one.

  7. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: This is one of my must-have subscriptions. The level of customization is fantastic! It’s like having your very own hair-care personal shopper. I get confused easily when looking at row upon row of shampoos, conditioners, products, etc. The pure relief of never, ever having to face that again is worth the cost of the subscription.

Not to mention, the founders seem like they genuinely care about their customers, which is always a plus!

  10. I was very pleasantly surprised by the level of customization and customer service provided by Shtrands. Upon filling out the detailed questionnaire, I noted in the comments section, that despite the fact I checked that I use styling products, what I’d appreciate receiving are hair treatment focused products (i.e. conditioners, leave-ins, oils, etc.), and this exactly what I received! I did receive the Teadora shampoo/conditioner set (I’m not sure what scent), but I also received a leave-in conditioner and a hair oil. I was VERY happy with my box. 🙂

    I think it’s just my product junkie tendencies, but I wish they would offer this box monthly.

  11. I also got the Teadora shampoo and conditioner (but in a different scent) and the Abba blow dry lotion and I loved them! This has actually become one of my favorite boxes to receive. I love the customization and their customer service is really great!

  12. Wow! Your boxes have been completely different from mine. I had much lower value items, which is probably good if I fall in love with something. I really like the service as a whole but I haven’t found anything that I love after 2 boxes. The personalized service is great!
