Pupjoy is a fully customizable subscription box for dogs. Treats are made in the US, often from smaller or artisan producers. You can select a box for one or multiple dogs, a box containing treats only, toys and accessories only or all three categories of items. Other choices include grain free, protein sensitive, and organic, toy preferences, and dog size. This is a review of Uno-sized Natural Box which includes grain free treats and “inquisitive"-durable toys (that is, designed for dogs who destroy soft toys). The size selected was “large,” which is 50-100 pounds. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who weighs about 84 pounds right now.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

I thought the box-in-a-box with bubble wrap was a bit of overkill, since there wasn’t really anything breakable in there.  Oh well.

There’s not  a traditional information card for this box.

pupjoy-september-2016-greenblender

There was also a coupon code for Green Blender in the box. It’s a nice change from the Hello Fresh ones I seem to get everywhere else.

pupjoy-september-2016-rope

Beco Rope Jungle Triple Knot (large) – Value $8.49

Rope toys are always a hit with Nyx and this one is big enough to give to her (maybe not big enough to tug but you don’t want your hand anywhere near her teeth when she gets going). Beco toys and bowls are made with eco-conscious materials, which is also nice.

Rushing Waters Fisheries Rainbow Trout and Sweet Potato Dog Treats (6 oz) – Value $7

I don’t think I’ve seen rainbow trout as a flavor in dog treats before. It’s nice to see novel/unusual protein choices. Plus, these are grain free which is great for dogs with allergies. The trout used in these are farm-raised in Wisconsin.

Zippy Paws Z-Stitch Snake (large green) – Value $12.99

Nyx thought this was AWESOME. I left Sneaky in the picture to give you a sense of scale. Definitely size-appropriate for a large dog. And well-made/durable.

pupjoy-september-2016-treats

Good Reasons Charlie’s Cheddar Chomps (7 oz) – Value $7.99

These are wheat, corn, and soy free, in addition to being vegetarian. The first ingredient is brown rice flour and they also have some protein from green peas. Good Reasons is a not-for-profit company providing jobs to people with autism and other disabilities.

Wagatha’s Steak and Eggs Dog Biscuits (8 oz) – Value $8.50

These are also wheat, corn, and soy free. Nyx has done well with beef in the past but these have barley flour so I’ll be passing them along to another dog to enjoy (Nyx was recently diagnosed with prednisone-induced Cushing’s disease so we are once again altering her medication and I am reluctant to give her treats until that is all sorted out, which could be as long as 8-12 weeks). These are made in Vermont in small batches with human-grade ingredients.

I hope you can see from the photos how much fun Nyx had with the snake toy. And she didn’t even destroy it – she’ll get to play with it again!

Verdict: I calculated a value of $44.97 for the September Pupjoy Box. That is a little bit better than the cost of the subscription (and you can always do a longer-term subscription to save a bit more). What I really thought was great, though, were the focus on high-quality, low-allergen treats and the durable and size-appropriate toys. If you are missing PawPack (they got sold), this is looking to be a good replacement for that box.

Sorry to hear about Nyx’s diagnosis. Cushing’s Syndrome is no walk in the park…. (I had the human version a few years back caused by an adrenal tumor)… I know that in doggies diet can really make a huge difference.

Best of luck!!! Please keep us posted on her progress!

Nyx can only eat one prescription food due to her IBD so dietary changes are out. In her case it is caused by being on prednisone so it should be reversible if we can get her on a lower dose and irregular scheduling to give her adrenal glands a chance to function better.

I’m sorry to hear about Nyx recent diagnosis! I have a min pin who has discord Lupus and will be on prednisone for the rest of his life. The long term steroid use has also given him Cushing’s! We do what we can to keep him comfortable and happy, while we still have him! He’s 12 now and still carries his favorite toys around. 🙂 Good luck to Nyx!

I subscribe to 3 different pet boxes (yes, it’s overkill), but I have been very very happy with the quality of this box overall in comparison to the other two and I highly recommend it to anyone with dogs. I get the box for the small dog size. A few favorites I’ve gotten from these guys include a leash from bait free (my favorite choice), a puzzle plush toy (meerkat plush toys in a larger plush ball)- my one dog played with this for about 2 hours strait when it first came and it’s still a favorite), and I really enjoy (my dogs enjoy eating them) the treats we’ve gotten from small batch companies.
