pourmore-september-2016-booklet1

This box did not include supplemental information from Pour More, but the whisky did come with an accompanying booklet from Ardbeg.

pourmore-september-2016-booklet2

The booklet talked a bit about the Ardbeg distillery and the different whiskies made there.

There’s also a map, showing the location of the distillery on the Scottish island of Islay.

Ardbeg Uigeadail- £59.00, which is approximately $76.90 (on sale for $57.40 via Master of Malt)

First of all, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably still glancing up at the name of this whisky and wondering how in the world you’re supposed to pronounce it. It’s pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal,” and according to the Ardbeg website, this single malt takes it’s name from “the mysterious loch which supplies the peat-laden water used to make Ardbeg.” How delightful!

Ardbeg has been producing whisky since 1789, and their whisky is well known as one of the peatiest in the world. The distillery is located on the southern coast of Islay, and I was lucky enough to visit the spot about five years ago. Islay is a beautiful island, and the rocky southern coastline is particularly striking. Here’s a shot of the distillery from Ardbeg’s website:

Ardbeg Uigeadail has a powerful 54.2% ABV and is aged in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks. It’s been on my “want to try it” list for awhile now, so I’m thrilled to see it in this month’s box!

The flavor is strong, intense, and very peaty, and it has a hint of sweetness that’s balanced really nicely with bold spice and lots of smoke.

I’m a really big fan of this whisky, but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The robust peaty flavor has a medicinal quality that certainly won’t be for everyone. I love it, though, and I’m happy to see that Pour More isn’t afraid to send something with oomph!

Verdict: I’m a big fan of Islay whisky, and the Ardbeg Uigeadail is a star! It’s a little disappointing that this box didn’t contain any supplemental information, but according to one of the comments they made on a previous review, it seems like Pour More has been having some difficulty getting their distributor to include their info sheets in subscribers’ boxes. (FYI- my box last month did contain supplemental information but others haven’t.) Hopefully, they’ll get that issue ironed out soon. In terms of value, this bottle falls short of the subscription cost; however, it’s important to note that the first bottle I received from Pour More came in significantly over the subscription cost. I’m happy to see fluctuations in value from month to month, as long as it averages out over time.

I bought a pourmore subscription for my wife’s birthday a few months back with high hopes and dealt with the same thing regarding no included information on the bottle. That was part of the fun for me buying the subscription and was a bit of a let down. We also received a bottle that wasn’t particularly “craft” or unavailable at a our local retailer. Top it all off and they promised a free month because of the complaints we had , we responded and then we never heard from them again. Seems like they still don’t really have their stuff together at pourmore and are “working out the kinks” as a start up. That said, making promises or offers and not keeping them isn’t a good way to retain customers. I’d save the cash, head to your local store and pick something up you haven’t heard of before trying a whiskey subscription again. Glad you enjoyed your selection though!

This was a very good review. I am so jealous because I live in Texas and therefore I can’t subscribe. I love Scotch and this one looks/reads as one that I REALLY want to try. I will check with my local liquor store and see if they will order it. But, I am so sad that I cannot join.

I’m in TX too, so I join you in wishful thinking with whisky subs. And this is one of my all-time favorite scotches, if not #1. I have it on hand all the time. Very smoky and peaty. If you have a Total Wine store near you (2 recently opened in Austin, and I know there’s one in San Antonio), they usually carry it.

Have you ever tried Regal Salute? I had it on a Carnival Cruise after another cruiser suggested it. I fell in LOVE. They charged the same for it as all the other scotches. I went to our pretty great liquor store in Houston – Specs – $200.00 a bottle. I will probably never taste it again – oh well! It was fun while it lasted. But, I would really like to try this one.
