Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs. Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds). This review is for a large dog box. My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 84 pounds right now.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Here is a close-up of the meme on the inside of the box. I love the dog’s eyes. (Nyx would be very happy if every toy was a stick.)

pettreater-august-2016-letter

This box included a letter addressed to Nyx! (And also a note on what to do with one of the items if your dog has a large neck.)

pettreater-august-2016-cards2

There were also a couple of other cards with themes, photos, etc.

pettreater-august-2016-hellofresh

And a gift code for Hello Fresh. Is there anyone who doesn’t have enough of these to paper the walls in a small bathroom by now?

I had some help opening the box, as you can see. Sneaky REALLY wanted in there. (More on that in a bit.)

Juicy Crittoure for the Decadent Dog Shampoo/Conditioner/Brush Set – Value $15.99

This had a tag on the box that said MSRP was $55! However, I can only find it for sale for much less than that, at overstock sites and from third party sellers on Amazon/eBay/etc. It seems Juicy Couture abandoned the trademark “JUICY CRITTOURE” over 8 years ago, though, so I am guessing this is a legitimate product but pretty old. Nyx has to use medicated shampoo for her skin condition (a side effect of being on prednisone) and I never much saw the point of conditioner for a Rottweiler, so I will be passing this on to another dog owner.

pettreater-august-2016-brush

Here’s a closer look at the brush, with my hand for scale. This is not really an appropriate brush for Nyx’s coat in terms of size or bristle type.

pettreater-august-2016-notepad

Dog and Human Things To Do List Notepad – Value $1

There is always one item “for humans” in Pet Treater. It is usually marked with a sticker although this month it wasn’t. I will use this when I have need for scraps of paper. (Note: Nyx doesn’t sleep in our bed because she can’t climb stairs. But Mr. Kitty manages to take up about 7/8 of the bed, and he bites if you try to move him.)

I could only find this on eBay (just try searching for “dog things to do” on Google) and if I am reading the listing correctly, $10 covers the cost of a box of 10 of these pads, so I have divided to get the value of one pad.

pettreater-august-2016-toys

Petlou 23” Raccoon – Value $13.29

You will see a lot of Petlou plushes in Pet Treater. They are size appropriate and hold up relatively well. I knew this had a squeaker in the body, but Nyx found an additional squeaker in the tail.

Multipet Rope and Rubber Ball – Value $9.63

This has both rope and rubber and is a good size for a large dog. Nyx can destroy rope but rubber usually holds up when she chews it, so we will see. (Nyx ALWAYS gets supervised with new toys, so don’t worry about that.)

pettreater-august-2016-treats

Dingo Market Cuts Chicken Jerky (8 oz) – Value $8.91

These don’t expire until next year (I always check) and are currently in production, so that is great. They are made in the USA and have no byproducts (they’re 100% chicken). One area Pet Treater is improving is in the treats they send out. But, Nyx can’t have chicken because of her IBD, so sadly, I can’t share her opinion of these.

6” Chicky Twizzies All Natural Dog Chew – Value $3.99

These are grain free and made in the USA. The first two ingredients are chicken meal and chicken hearts and they are said to be “non-staining” and “100% digestible.” Reviews on Amazon suggest these don’t last very long, though.

pettreater-august-2016-sneaky

Aha! THIS is what Sneaky wanted out of the box. (I didn’t actually give it to her. She would’ve run off with it and I would’ve found it under some piece of furniture in a few months or years.)

pettreater-august-2016-water

H2O to Go Portable Water Bowl from EVRI – Value $3.50

This wraps around a water bottle and is a good way to transport fresh water for your dog for summer or other outdoor activities. (This item varies WIDELY in price depending on where you look.)

Natural Dog Company Paw Soother (0.15 oz) – Value $1.35

At first I thought this was a lip balm. I’m glad I read the card before using it, because it is definitely NOT a lip balm – instead, you put it on irritated dog paws to help soothe them and make them less rough. These are vegan and made with ingredients that are safe if dogs lick it off their paws. I think this size is more of a sample; it comes in a larger form that would be easier to use on a large breed dog.

Bowtie – Value $1.38

This would’ve made for a cute picture if my dog’s fur wasn’t primarily black. I appreciate Pet Treater switching things up every now and then, though. Usually they send out bandanas.

Here are a few shots of Nyx enjoying the raccoon toy. We took this away after five minutes because she has a little sore in her mouth (she is going to the vet soon to have a look at that, among other things) but it is still intact and she’ll be able to play with it again.

Verdict: I calculated a value of around $59 for the August Pet Treater dog subscription box. That is more than double the cost of the box, which is nice (and fairly typical for Pet Treater). I think this month had more of a “closeout” feel than usual, though, since I actually DID find everything online, and most of it at places like eBay or from third-party sellers on Amazon. Of course, the hit for Nyx was the plush raccoon, and I have to admit I always enjoy when Sneaky bites things.

I love love LOVE that they gave me a “Try One Box” option. I have been subscribing to BarkBox, but I’m always looking for fun things for my furbaby! I’m excited to get my first Pet Treater box!

Another home run box for me. I can’t say enough how glad I am that I dumped bark box for PetTreater.

We love our Pet Treater boxes, however, I agree with the previous commentor. We didn’t get our July box until Mid August. I always get charged for the next month’s box before I receive the current months box, which is a bit frustrating. My Nita, (who is 4months old and 42lbs) always enjoys the treats and toys. Our box was slightly different, we got two bags of treats and did not get the chicken stick, paw ointment, or hello fresh card (which I’ve been interested I trying ?). The toy that she got was a porcupine, which is a great large size and although is does have a honker in it, it has so much fluff what she doesn’t really ever make it sound. Nita is more of a nibbler of toys not a tearer or destroyer, lol.

I don’t really like how they send it out in 3 waves and don’t consider sending a month ahead of holidays. I got my July box in August because of when I ordered initially, so I got a patriotic bandana over a month after 4th of July. It was also giant so I will have to cut it since when I fold it it is too bulky for my small dog. Otherwise I think it is a good value.

I have the opposite problem with the bandanas they send — far too small for a Rottweiler neck!

Agree with you on the shipping times. I got a Cinco de Mayo box in June…
