The Subscription Box: Gainz Box
The Cost: $32 + $6 shipping on a month-to-month basis, save with longer subscriptions
The Products: Women or Men's apparel (in your size), equipment, snacks and supplements, and other fitness items. (Gain[z] Box markets to a CrossFit audience, but I do not think you absolutely have to be into CrossFit to enjoy this box – many of the items are suitable for general fitness enthusiasts!) They promise a $75 value in every box.

There was a full color fold-out information card featuring CrossFit Games athlete Brooke Ence using some of the items from the box. Wow, has she got some muscular legs! I like that they featured a woman athlete and, although it’s a little hard to see here, she was clearly having fun modeling the items from the box.
Kill Cliff Mojo Rising Cold Brew Coffee (11 fl oz) – Value $3.75
This wasn’t on the information card, but Gainz Box confirmed all subscribers received this item. I am often afraid when I receive a large can of a drink in a subscription box that something will be broken, but everything was super well packaged here, with lots of bubble wrap separating items. This is sweetened with erythritol and it does contain coconut cream. I am not a coffee fan so I gave it to my husband, who enjoyed it. (He has a cold right now so no comments to offer on overall flavor…)
Brook Ence Special Edition Knee Wraps from Exosleeve – Value $32
These are an exclusive print for Gainz Box, so I’ve used the value from other Exosleeve knee wraps and linked to their main “wraps” page. These are made with Neoprene and are antimicrobial. I am very excited about these. I am about to start a recomposition phase where I do a lot more weightlifting and I have problems with my knees during squats. These are definitely going to help there. (They did have kind of a chemical smell when I opened the package but it dissipated fairly quickly.)
Brook Ence Coffee Mug – Value $10
I took the value from the information card since this is an exclusive item. We go through a lot of mugs at my house (usually for tea or Crio Bru) and I don’t mind one promotional item with the subscription box logo on it, especially if it is something useful.
Pure Pharma Synbiotics SB3 (4 packets) – Value $5.60
I see that Brooke Ence is featured on the Pure Pharma page for this product, too! But, I think this is a good product to include in a box, and off the beaten path for a fitness subscription (it’s refreshing to not get a protein powder, BCAA supplement, or pre-workout supplement). Gut health is really important and is being linked to all sorts of other aspects of health by new studies every week. This contains probiotics, prebiotics (fructo-oligosaccharides and inulin, which help the good gut bacteria from the probiotics take root), and vitamin C.

Limited Edition Brooke Ence + Gainz Box Tank – Value $25
This is another exclusive item for Gainz Box. It is still in the 80s and 90s here in Georgia (in September) and my basement (where I work out) is hot, so I will take all the workout tanks I can get. This one allows freedom of movement but doesn’t get in the way.
Sweat Cosmetics Skin Balancing Cleansing Towelette – Value $0.70
This has vitamins and minerals and is infused with coconut water; it can be used on the face or body. They also have lots of antioxidants like vitamin E and those in green tea extract (and they’re vegan and gluten free, if either is of concern to you). I don’t mind getting one or two small things like this if the rest of the box has a good value, and this product is new to me. Some days I don’t get to shower for an hour after a workout, and I hate it when my glasses are slipping down my nose from sweat and oil. I think this helped refresh my skin without drying me out. I don’t know if the foil packet extras like this are the same for men and women, but they do ask your gender before you sign up.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $77.05 for the August Gainz Box. That is more than twice the cost of the box and it is also over the promised $75 value, so they did great from a value perspective. The two most expensive items in the box (knee wraps and tank) are both super useful for me, personally, and I like the other items as well (and my husband is happy to have gotten the coffee). I think that this subscription would be great for CrossFit enthusiasts or anyone into strength training, at least from what I’ve seen so far. This is a pretty popular area lately (what with WODBOM and Strength Crate) so it will be interesting to compare box contents over time.
