September's theme is Kyushu, the "nine states." It is the most southwesterly island in Japan and served as one of the earliest ports that traded and interacted with the outside world. Kyushu also has a subtropical climate that produces things like rice, wheat, mangoes, and sweet potatoes.
Mango Chiffon Cake
This is heavenly. Each chiffon cake is made with real mangoes.
The cake is soft, moist, and delicate. The mango filling is slightly tangy and beautifully complements the cake's creaminess. I am beyond elated that they included four of them!
Cruz Cookies
These are wafer-thin sandwich cookies with various filling. The name comes from the Portuguese word for "cross." Bokksu included three flavors: Original, Strawberry, and Coffee. All three taste amazing.
This is the coffee flavor. The word "cruz" and a cross is embossed on each wafer.
Kurobou Meimon
Kurobou (literally "black stick") is a traditional sweet made with 100% Kyushu-grown wheat, black sugar, and eggs. It's shaped like a biscotti, but the kurobou has a soft fluffy interior covered by a crispy exterior. This snack has a much sharper flavor compared to the smoother, more buttery sweetness of the mango chiffon cake.
Dondo Age Kyushu Soy Sauce Flavor
These are crunchy rice crackers covered in sweet soy sauce glaze. The crackers have a complex flavor-- it gets savory, then sweet sweet, then savory, and there's even a little spicy kick on the back of my tongue! Every bite is a different experience.
The puffy, scalloped edges reminds me of popcorn.
Bontaname
Bontaname literally means pomelo candy. To me, this tastes like a cross between a mochi and a fruit snack-- AKA, very delicious.
Each candy is wrapped in edible rice paper. Don't try to peel the paper off-- it's too difficult to remove, plus it is meant to be eaten.
Kukicha
Kukicha means twig tea, and it's a green tea blend made of stems, stalks, and twigs. True to its name, this looks like it was collected from someone's backyard.
It smells like dried seaweed but, don't worry, it tastes very much like regular green tea. The earthy flavor complements the sweet snacks included in the box. My favorite combo is kukicha with the Cruz cookies.
Verdict: I am very pleased with the selection from Bokksu this month! Everything tasted delicious, but my favorite was the Mango Chiffon Cake. I counted 15 items total, so the cost breakdown is $2.60 per snack. This subscription continues to be a fun way to discover premium snacks while learning about Japanese culture!
