One side of the card reveals this month’s theme, “Post-Race Cooldown.” I find the themes kind of iffy in terms of curation, but I also really don’t care about the themes. Please note: this is a review of the August package. This normally ships late in the month for me.

The other side of the card gives a little more information about the masks, including directions if they are unusual.

Beauty Friends II Pomegranate Essence Mask Sheet Pack – Value $1.90

Beauty Friends II Royal Jelly Essence Mask Sheet Pack – Value $1 (sale price)

Outside of the ingredients in the names of each, these have very similar ingredients, so I will talk about them together. Both have purslane (which may be anti-inflammatory or analgesic), glycerin and hyaluronic acid for moisture, antioxidants from acerola, grapefruit, and apricot, licorice root (which may help even out skin tone), and Gastrodia elata extract (which may have an effect on melanin production, though I doubt it would penetrate the skin in most cases).

Meanwhile, pomegranate also has a ton of antioxidants, while royal jelly (a bee secretion for feeding larvae and queens) is commonly used for softening and moisture retention and has some minerals as well as antibacterial properties. I thought these masks performed fairly similarly (fit well enough, were moisturizing, did not irritate my skin), though I did like the light honey fragrance to the royal jelly one. In both cases, I believe it would take more than one use to really see long term effects.

It’s Skin Glow Cream Mask Sheet – Value $2.50

This one has a creamy white serum (I’m seeing more of the cream-based sheet masks these days) that is a bit thinner than a traditional lotion or moisturizer. The envelope for this one was HUGE compared to the mask size, not sure what is going on there. This one contains common moisturizers like glycerin and shea butter, plus tea leaf, grapefruit, and peach extracts for antioxidants (to fight free radical damage which should help with prevention of both UV-induced skin discoloration and fine lines), as well as allantoin, which is supposed to soothe/smooth rough skin. I am liking these cream masks; I find them much less messy than some of the ones with transparent serums.

Missha Real Solution Tencel Sheet Mask with Collagen – Value $3.25

This is a good one for moisturizing as well as brightening. It has niacinamide, which has always worked well for me for reducing redness. It also has hydrolyzed collagen (so it is not vegan, since collagen can only be produced by animals). For moisture, it includes phytomucin from lotus roots, which hangs onto moisture and should help improve the appearance of fine lines at least a little, as well as extracts from jicama (helps with moisture and may help in situations of stress), mallow (anti-inflammatory and moisturizing) and cauliflower (contains salicylates so may help with acne). Brightening is hard to assess after one use but this is definitely moisturizing.

maskmaven-august-2016-water

Dr. Jart+ Vital Hydra Solution Deep Hydration Sheet Mask – Value $6

This one had so much serum it took a really long time to dry after I removed the mask. This has something called “Aquaxyl,” which is a combination of xylitol and glucose and is supposed to fight dehydration and improve skin’s moisture barrier function. This also has seaweed to remove impurities, and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which is a carbohydrate that holds onto water and may have a plumping effect and/or reduce the appearance of fine lines (at least temporarily).

Saference H + W Skin Rx Moisturizing Mask – Value $2.39

This one fit my face pretty well and wasn’t drippy. So that made me happy. This one also has hyaluronic acid for moisturizing purposes and purslane, which may be anti-inflammatory or analgesic. This further has matricaria extract, which I find to be calming and Opuntia coccinellifera (a type of cactus) fruit extract, which I would expect to be moisturizing since cacti are really adapted to retain as much water as possible in a harsh desert environment. This further has Centella asiatica extract, which is used to treat small wounds, burns, and psoriasis (this ingredient has actually been studied scientifically, which is something I don’t usually find).

maskmaven-august-2016-yadah

Yadah Moisturizing Mask Pack (Honey) – Value $2.49 (sale price)

Yadah Soothing Mask Pack (Cactus) – Value $2.49 (sale price)

We have also seen this brand in past Mask Maven bags, though I do believe the mask varieties were different. Both of these masks have very similar ingredients once you get past the special ones pictured on the packaging. Both have glycerin, aloe, and hyaluronate, which are great for moisture, a brown algae extract, and grapefruit extract (a source of antioxidants). They further contain Epilobium angustifolium (or fire weed) extract, which may be antimicrobial, anti-irritant, and antioxidant, and, weirdly, Szechuan peppercorn extract, which some people consider to be an irritant.

The cactus mask is pretty moisturizing since cacti are good at retaining water. This is also supposed to relieve environmental stress but I think maybe you have to use it longer than I did (which was only once…) to see a result. Meanwhile, the honey mask is full of vitamins and minerals and may have some antibacterial properties. Neither mask had a strong scent and neither caused irritation.

maskmaven-august-2016-lipliner

Tony Moly Auto Lip Liner Easy Touch in Rose Beige – Value $4.66

So that “mystery mask” from the information card? It’s actually a lip liner. (Kind of like how Nancy Su’s “mystery lip product” from the Beauteque BB Bag was a blush…) Well, I know the Beauteque store is undergoing a transition to a “mask marketplace” and so they are probably getting rid of old stock. I don’t mind. I will use this. And it has a brush built in (I just didn’t see that until well after I took the photo).

Here’s a swatch of the lipliner.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $26.68 for the August 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven. That is a big improvement over the past few months (granted, K-beauty prices are all over the map). Most of these masks were new to me and I appreciate getting the chance to try some more expensive sheet masks. I don’t know that price always equates to quality and I have definitely found some $1 masks I like along the way, but it is nice to see the full range.

I have never tried sheet masks before, but I am thoroughly intrigued with this trend. I have sensitive skin though so I’m fearful of the unknown and don’t want anything that might irritate or cause me more breakouts. I jumped on the Asian BB cream bandwagon many years ago and fell in love with those so I’m hoping I can find a safe, reputable company for sheet masks too. If anyone has any favorite sheet masks to recommend, please let me know. (I have combination skin.)

Hi Lindsay !
I actually just signed up to pink Seoul and received the August box ( if you sign up now September would be your first box). I thought the box I received was great, they let you pick your skin type and a concern (like anti aging, etc). The mask box is $30/mo (MSA has a discount I think it’s msa10 – 10% off the first month). Also, you can skip a month by just sending them an email, which I think is great, if you are overloaded on masks. In the August box I also received a skinfood wash off mask which I thought was awesome -it was full Size and made my skin feel so soft. I haven’t tried any other mask box but hopefully this helps.

I think they should stick to “mystery product” and cover all bets lol

My mystery item was also a mask. This was a weird month for me. It seems like I received the dry skin/moisturizing variants than the ones for oily skin. I ended up swapping almost all my masks.

Between this subscription and Miss Tutii, I had fun trying sheet masks but ended up canceling both those as I discovered I don’t like how clammy they make my skin feel. I learned I’m more of a wash-off/clay mask type of girl. 🙂

I wish there was a non sheet mask subscription box (and I wish lip love monthly always included a lip balm/chapstick ?). I also much prefer the wash off kind. Beauty Fix is my favorite box because I love skin care products the most. Plus the value is great! Yet, it is rare for them to include a dedicated mask, as in not a cleanser or moisturizer that can also be used as a mask. Occasionally a skincare brand will offer a trial mask set, like Peter Thomas Roth. Those are a lot of fun.

I wish there was a mask subscription that offered all types of face masks in one box (sheets, wash-off, peel-off, peels). I recently started to use sheet masks (I just used one tonight!), and while I love how they make my skin look & feel, I think it would be fun to discover more conventional types of masks. However, I do have to say that my skin has never looked so good after using a sheet mask, when I compare it to how it looks after using a more traditional mask.

My mystery lip product in my BB bag was a mask! I guess our mystery products got switched. 🙂
