BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 83 pounds.)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

They even customized the paper lining the box to look like part of a yearbook to go with the “Back to School” theme!

The information card doesn’t list the items but is clever and kind of fun to read through.

Milk Carton Toy – Value $12

This was really big and I wasn’t sure whether Nyx would be able to chew on it, but she found a way (see below). It was pretty darn sturdy, too (and yay for no stuffing).

No. 2 Pencil Toy – Value $14

Rubber toys are usually safe bets for Nyx. This one has a hole down the axis where you can stick a treat (alternate view below). Nyx will probably like this just fine without a treat, especially if I put a little of her wet food in the cavity.

Here’s a shot of the hole through the pencil toy.

So you may be wondering why there is a picture of a cat here. Sneaky was VERY interested in this box. I think because of one of the items below:

barkbox-large-september-2016-treats

Uptown Pup Scene Alphabet Treats (5.5 oz) – Value $6

These are also made in the USA and the first ingredient is chicken.  I think they are a good size for medium or large dogs but you probably want to break them up for very small or toy breeds.

Bark & Co. Teacher’s Pet Snacks (5 oz) – Value $6

These are made in the USA and have a really short ingredients list: oat flour, pork, honey, apples, canola oil.  They have no wheat, corn, or soy, and should be good for a lot of dogs with allergies!

Beef 11” Woof Stix (2 pack) – Value $7

These look like they were made for going in the pencil toy. Nyx’s medications are being adjusted right now (aren’t they always?) so she can’t have them, unfortunately, but I did allow the household BEEF EXPERT to inspect them:

And they have received the official Sneaky Bite of Approval! (I didn’t actually let her eat them.)

Here are a few photos of Nyx enjoying the milk carton toy:

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $45 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version). As usual, that is above the cost of the box by a fair amount. Also as usual, they did a great job of choosing a theme (probably easier since they work with suppliers to make custom treats and toys) and designing cute packaging. Nyx thought the toys were pretty awesome, too, and they were suitable for a large dog who is a heavy chewer.  (We do get the heavy chewer option.) Overall, BarkBox has consistently been good in terms of quality and value!

This month was our 4th month and was one of our favorites. In addition to the 3 bags of treats, we got a cloth lunch sack (with crinkly paper sound) complete with a squeaky pbj & cookie inside, a squeaky apple (that breaks into half and velcros together) and a toy that looks like notebook paper with cute doggy themed assignments. BarkBox has been so worth the money.

Other sub boxes should learn from BarkBox. Beyond the great curation of themes and the quality and uniqueness of the toys and treats, I’m impressed with the attention to detail here. Since the dogs don’t give a hoot about how their stuff got there, it’s a bonus to open up a box that is nicely packed with an entertaining, well-put-together info card and themed wrapping paper that makes me feel like I’m getting a present, too.
Ragan, have you looked into the BarkBox Destroyers Club?

Haha, I haven’t, but I think I should send them a photo of that gymnast toy from July.

Love the Nyx the Destroyer photos! And definitely send the photo; they say they’ll give points=credit for new toys if you send in wrecked toy pictures.

Bark Box had the cutest boxes – I live reading the reviews bc they stick to their theme so well.
I think I’m going to have to get this for my mom’s dog for Christmas, she goes through toys frequently bc she’s a heavy chewer so they don’t usually last long. And of course she’ll love the treats

Heads up about the pencil!! The eraser pops off for easier filling, but my Great Dane puppy could pop the eraser off far too easily which made it a choking hazard for such a big doggo!

BarkBox had excellent customer service though (as expected!) and sent us a new toy out, we expect it tomorrow!

We got the medium box. The cutest toy, and Oberon’s favorite, this month was a squeaky PBJ sandwich. He’s been carrying it around everywhere!

We have the large dog box plus extra toy. My GSD, Theia, loves her Bark Box. We got the milk carton toy but instead of the pencil, we got a squeeky toy apple and a squeeky toy book. Theia loved all the treats except for the Teacher’s Pet treats. She really didn’t care for them so I will probably give them to a friend who has a dachshund mix 🙂

I was super happy with barkbox this month. We get two boxes (different sizes) and we bought both when there was a deal for a free extra toy – which makes the value REALLY good.

I thought the toys were super cute this month as I loved the theme and more importantly all the toys and treats were a hit with my menagerie!
