SoBakeable-July-2016-Brochure

This month’s recipe is Salted Caramel Brownies! I received a full-color booklet with detailed recipe instructions.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Brochure2

The ingredients needed for every step of the recipe are clearly outlined. Color pictures accompany every step.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Brochure3

SoBakeable recipes are designed “for the beginner to the advanced baker.” Full disclosure: I bake professionally, so I’m definitely in the advanced category. Still, I tried to approach this box with beginners in mind. (Last month, I let my non-baker husband take the lead on So Bakeable’s recipe, and he found the instruction clear and easy to follow. You can check out that review here.)

SoBakeable-July-2016-Letter

My box also contained a handwritten note— a nice touch!

SoBakeable-July-2016-Packaging

Everything I needed for the recipe was individually packaged and clearly labeled.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Scraper

This box also contained a metal pastry cutter. The pastry cutter is one of my favorite kitchen tools! It can be used for cutting, lifting and moving sticky dough, and cleaning off a work space.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Pan

To begin, I prepared my brownie pan by lining it with parchment paper.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Chocolate

Next, I melted chocolate with butter over a double boil. (Note: despite the recent heatwave, my chocolate arrived in perfect condition!)

SoBakeable-July-2016-Batter

I stirred sugar and a few eggs into the chocolate, and I then folded in dry “brownie mix.”

SoBakeable-July-2016-BatterPan

I poured the batter into my prepared pan, smoothed out the top, and put the brownies in the oven to bake.

SoBakeable-July-2016-ChocolatePan

While the brownies were in the oven, I prepared the chocolate planks that would eventually top them.

SoBakeable-July-2016-ChocolatePanClose

I melted another portion of chocolate (in the microwave this time) and smoothed it out onto a piece of parchment. I made a swirly design in the top using the back of a spoon, and then I sprinkled gold sugar and salt flakes on top.

SoBakeable-July-2016-ChocolatePlanks

The tray chilled in the fridge until the chocolate set, and then I cut the square into planks using the pastry cutter. As you can probably see, some of my planks lost their corners in the cutting process. (I think I got a little over excited with my swirling, which led to a few thin/weak spots in the chocolate…)

SoBakeable-July-2016-BrowniesBaked

After about 30 minutes, my brownies were done!

SoBakeable-July-2016-BrowniesSliced

I allowed them to cool (waiting is always the hardest part!), and then cut them into 8 pieces.

I also made salted caramel buttercream by whipping softened butter with “frosting mix” and caramel sauce.

SoBakeable-July-2016-PipingBag

SoBakeable included a pre-cut piping bag for the frosting. The end of my bag was cut to resemble an open star piping tip. I love the attention to detail. This is such a thoughtful (and time consuming, I’m sure) touch.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Brownies1

I filled the piping bag and topped each brownie with three dollops of buttercream.

SoBakeable-July-2016-Brownies2

I placed a chocolate plank on top of each brownie, followed by another three puffs of frosting, and then topped each brownie with “fancy sprinkles.”

SoBakeable-July-2016-Brownies3

Aren’t they so pretty!? I love the way they turned out, and the flavor was spot on. The brownies themselves were gooey, rich, and chocolatey, and the chocolate plank added texture and a salty kick. It’s not easy to make brownies seem gourmet, but SoBakeable absolutely nailed it with these.

Verdict: I don’t think I can say enough great things about this box from SoBakeable. First of all, they took a classic comfort food dessert and turned it into something high-end and special. The recipe was easy to follow and well written, and it feels fresh and original. Best of all, the brownies were outstanding. Determining value for a box like this is tricky, but I would estimate that these brownies would probably sell for $6- $8 in a professional bakery. You could certainly make brownies at home for less than the cost of this box, but, for me, the quality of the recipe and the pre-portioned ingredients help justify the cost. I can definitely recommend this box for avid home bakers, dessert lovers, and even for kids. While the recipes are fairly detailed, I think kids with an interest in baking could definitely tackle them with a little adult supervision.

I just love this box. Totally agree with folks who say it’s not just about the end product. It’s also about the experience. My daughter made these brownies with my mother (her grandmother) a couple of weeks ago, and it was a totally sweet bonding time for them. Would not have been the same with just a plain brownie recipe. They both felt so proud and satisfied with the gorgeous end product when they were done, and the brownies tasted GREAT. It’s about the joy these boxes bring us, and this one definitely brings me joy.

It would be nice if they gave an actual recipe so you can make them again without the mixes…

Your brownies came out beautiful ! If I had the extra funds, I might try this box. It’s a neat idea.

What a GREAT sub! Not gonna lie – $35 a month is a little rich for my blood, however it looks like a fun activity to do with others (kids, friends or significant other) and it looks like they sent you everything you needed except the pan and wet ingredients.

Would love to try this one out – maybe I’ll grab a single box around the holidays.

I also took a look at the pricing on their website. It’s $33 for 3 months or $190 for 6 months. Then add the $5 promo code in the review, which also helps to get the price down to like $31. They say shipping is included too, so I think that’s good value.

Why does it say Makes 8, Serves 12?

Jenny

That’s a great question, I see that the brownies look very large & very rich – so maybe it’s for sharing like cutting some in half for a serving size.

This is the best at home dessert box out there, specially 100 percent better then the other box that sends already made chocolate cake for every recipe and box. Gross…. This is the right idea. Alittle to expensive for me for a every month box but this is a perfect box to get when you have a holiday or some sort of gathering that you want to impress. This also would be a wonderful gift to buy for the baker at Christmas or even a Yankee Swap type deal too.. Yummy. Great job with your dessert. Look beautiful and yummy too.

While I like the concept of this and it’s definitely better than that other baking monstrosity – I can’t justify the cost. Making brownies from scratch will cost someone less than $10. For $30 I’d expect to see not only the pastry cutter, but the pan included.

And I’m sorry but I’d never pay $8 for a brownie!!!

Although I think the cost is way too much for this – those brownies look AMAZING!!!!!!

I thought the same thing about this, too much money ….at first. Then I thought of it in terms of a “craft box”.Not everyone is crafty,so I could see this as fun for someone who cant bake…no stress. It would be a great kit for a family to do together!

I think the added value is that it is also a cooking lesson. Teaching people to bake their own specialty goodies is far cheaper than having to pick it up from fancy bakeries. It would be cheaper to get everything yourself and do it from scratch but its like exercising, always easier to think we can just be motivated but sometimes we need the outside inspiration and push.

Novi

I’d accept that, but considering that the recipe includes “brownie mix” and “frosting mix”, I’m not sure if they’re teaching something you can replicate.

Suzie

I think what they are trying to do is teach new techniques to replicate, whether it be with that recipe or not. As a beginner baker, I don’t think I’d be able to bake this without a baking kit like this to help. I see this as more than the ingredients, but a lesson in baking too.

Suzie

I think what they are trying to do is teach new techniques & skills that you can replicate, whether with the same recipe or not. As a beginner baker this would be really helpful, I really don’t think I’d be able to bake anything like this myself without a kit like this.

Julia

I cannot justify paying $35 for ONE course of ONE meal. Even if you spend $10 on a pastry cutter, that’s still $25 for eight brownies, that I had to put time and effort into making. Just. No.

I would feel like a fool parting with my money if I subscribed. I’d rather do a search, or borrow a desert cooking book from the library.
