Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs.  Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds). This review is for a large dog box. My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 84 pounds right now.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This box included a letter addressed to Nyx!

There were also a couple of other cards with themes, photos, etc.

pettreater-july-2016-book

Barron’s Mini Encyclopedia of Dog Health by Roberta Baxter – Value $3

This is kind of a fun little book to flip through but not very in depth. I could write something this long just on how to deal with inflammatory bowel disease, hip, and knee issues in dogs. This seems to be out of print so I have linked to AbeBooks, where a lot of these are available in the price range of $2.50 to $3.50.

Blue Stars Bandana – Value $3?

This looks like it was supposed to have a tag on it (it had one of those plastic things for hanging) but it didn’t, so the value was a guess. Pet Treater includes a lot of bandanas. This one could kind of be made to fit Nyx (she has a thick neck) but I have discovered that Nyx does NOT like to wear anything more than a collar around her neck. (I kind of think bandanas are overdone in dog subscriptions and wish boxes would stop sending them.)

pettreater-july-2016-toy

ASPCA Rope Toy – Value $4

Oddly, this is the second football and rope toy we’ve received this month, although they were different. I didn’t even know this was a thing. Regardless, Nyx likes rope toys so this was a win. And it was size appropriate. (This is sold out/only available on closeout sites.)

Spongeables Spa-in-a-Sponge for Dogs (2.5 oz) – Value $15.99

Nyx has to be bathed with medicated shampoo for her skin condition so I will probably pass this on to another dog owner. It is supposed to contain enough shampoo for six baths but I find that larger dogs always require a LOT of shampoo.

pettreater-july-2016-treats

Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Patriotic Heart Cookie – Value $2 (?)

We see a lot of treats from this brand in Pet Treater. I am glad Pet Treater is branching out to provide some items like this and not all closeouts. And it is a good fit for a July box! These aren’t available on the Emmy’s site so the value is an estimate based on other treats sold there.

Loving Pets Grill-icious All Natural Beef Treats (4 oz, 2 bags) – Value $7.27

These are made in the USA with beef and sweet potato. And, they are good until November of 2017 so Pet Treater is really stepping it up in terms of treats. I am happy to see this change.

pettreater-july-2016-ice

Silicone Ice Tray – Value $8.09

Nyx loves ice cubes – she thinks of them as treats, which is good since she can’t have hardly any other treats. I will probably just fill this with water due to her dietary issues, but there is a recipe included for those of you whose dogs’ stomachs are not so sensitive. I could only find this on AliExpress so if you order it, it will take 2-3 weeks to arrive.

pettreater-july-2016-bowl

Frosty Bowl Chilled Pet Water Bowl – Value $13.99

You put the inner part of this in the freezer and then it will stay cold for a few hours. Nyx stays inside all day due to her health issues, so I might pass this on to my mom for her dog to use (also Nyx drinks all her water immediately, a side effect of being on prednisone). But, this is a really good inclusion in a summer themed dog box. I think this is an old style of bowl as it doesn’t look like the current offerings from this company.

pettreater-july-2016-nyx2

I put a little of Nyx’s food on the rubber part to try to interest her in it.

pettreater-july-2016-nyx1

But she wanted to tug the rope.

pettreater-july-2016-nyx3

And here is the death knell of any toy – Nyx gnawing on some part of it with the side of her mouth like that. We took it away when she had about eaten one of the knots in the rope…

Verdict: I calculated a value of around $57.34 for the July Pet Treater dog subscription box. That is definitely above the cost of the subscription. Nyx liked the toy and the treats will be good for more than a year, so that’s great. I kind of wish there were more toys this month and fewer supplies (bowl, sponge, etc.) but I also realize that Nyx has (very) special medical needs and people with healthy dogs may get more use out of the supplies.

I loved this month’s box. It was awesome and the toy and treats were GREAT! My dog loved it all. She didn’t take to the bowl at first but then she did after a day or so, she just uses it after playing outside in this Texas heat, she loves cold water so this bowl is great for her.

My bowl broke after the first use. I had it in the freezer for a few hours, filled it, put it on the ground for the dog and cats, went to refill it and as I was picking it up the two layers fell apart. I just tossed it, it wouldn’t stay together and I didn’t want to fuss with fixing it. We have enough bowls. I also got the book instead of the cooling towel, which was nice. As for the pupscicle recipe, I would cut it in half or more unless you have additional molds that can be used.

Mine broke first use too! I found my dog eating the little beads and about panicked. They sent me some treats to replace the broken bowl. It sounds like the same thing, froze it, let them have it and the layers split.

I want to clarify with the bowl. The layers with the blue/green balls in between them.

We only received one bag of those treats not 2 and our toy was a scooby-do dog themed multi squeaker

I contacted customer service about only getting one bag of treats. Apparently if you got 1 bag of treats, it was an 8 oz bag and if you got 2 bags, they were each 4 oz. I got the 8 oz bag, but they are still sending another because they said there were some contradictions in shipping and some people got 2- 8oz bags. I was pretty impressed by that! But my bowl also broke after 1 use like another poster said….so that stinks!
