Chococurb is an artisan chocolate box. They have three subscription 'sizes' so to speak: their mini, the nano (which is what I am reviewing today), and their regular subscription. Their nano box is a new addition to the lineup. They also have a shop, so you can repurchase the chocolates that you love!

CC3

Chococurb has the right idea when it comes to shipping chocolate. They shipped the Nano and Mini package in this cooler. A cooler with ice packs and a metallic bubble wrapper around the chocolate, to be specific! The day I received my box, it was 106. 1 truffle and the caramel were slightly soft, but nothing else. That's how you ship chocolate in the summer!

Wallie's Cacao - Milk of the Gods - Rio Caribe 44

I received this in my last Chococurb Mini. This milk chocolate bar is 26 grams of pure milk chocolate delight. This isn't the super sweet, flavorless milk chocolate you know and hate - this was lightly sweetened with the chocolate flavor coming through strongly, but still cut with the creaminess of milk.

CC5a

Videri Dark Milk Chocolate

The packaging on this little piece of chocolate was top notch. It is a thick, textured paper folded into an envelope. This is described as: "Milk chocolate with a dark chocolate twist: we’ve added even more cocoa beans. Our only blend with organic whole milk, these bars are still much darker than standard milk chocolate. The Dark Milk hovers around  55% cocoa content, and is sure to please both sides of the chocolate debate."

It is definitely still on the dark end of the spectrum of chocolate - don't bite into this expecting that creamy milk flavor from milk chocolate. With that said, it is very good - it's a bit of a light, creamy dark chocolate. I enjoyed it!

Chocolat Dolfin Lait Cafe

I've had the opportunity to try Dolfin chocolate often with Chococurb, and I always enjoy it. Dolfin is a Belgian brand that is hard to come across in the states. I appreciate that I can try different flavors through this subscription! I really liked this particular square - there was hints of coffee, but it wasn't overpowering!

Seattle Chocolates San Juan Sea Salt

This was delicious. It was a truffle like texture, with large salt crystals inside. The textural juxtaposition was awesome, and the flavor was even better. It's a good thing I only received one of these - I would eat a lot more!

CC7

Evolve Truffles Salted Chocolate Caramel

This stout beer infused salted chocolate caramel was amazing. This is one of the items that came a bit soft from the heat, but it was still delicious - I ripped in to it right away! It was perfectly salted and the caramel and chocolate went great together.

Verdict: Many of these chocolates are not available online in the sizes that I received, so I am going to do a general value judgement. For the cost of the box, each item here costs you an average of $2.00 per piece. For artisan, high quality chocolate, I think that is perfectly reasonable. I always enjoy the assortment of chocolates that Chococurb sends, and this month was no different!

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

We didn’t realize about the extra $10 shipping charge, until after we ordered our first box. Paying that much might not be the worst thing ever, if it actually guaranteed that everything would arrive intact. I’m pretty sure that the only real way for that to happen during Spring/Summer is for Chococurb to ship via FedEx or some other one/two day service, the way subscription meal boxes do to make sure all of the food stays cold/fresh. I’m not sure about FedEx trucks, but I do know that UPS and USPS trucks are not air conditioned at all so, if meltables sit in their trucks for hours in transit during Spring/Summer, the items will likely always arrive melted. Our box arrived this week and everything in it (including all of the ice packs) was completely melted and warm. We put the chocolates in the fridge to solidify, but they likely won’t taste the way they are meant to, because the chocolate won’t recrystallize the same.

We contacted Chococurb via their website yesterday and have received no response at all yet.

Hi Chris,

We replace all melted boxes when melting occurs. We would switch to Fed Ex but customers paying $30 for a box on 2 day freight in extremely un-reasonable. I’m sorry your box melted, I can send you a replacement right away.

Can you please email me at [email protected] so I can send out a new box for you on Monday. I’ll send it with one day express to ensure it arrives ok.

Thanks,
Kamran

Hey Bekki! Thanks so much for the review. Knowing you actually sampled all the chocolates and felt they were worth the quality plus the coupon code and the affordable Nano price as well as being able to try new brands prompted me to subscribe for a year and try it out.

I can’t recommend this subscription. When I signed up the webpage said shipping would be $3 which was fine, but then I was charged $10. I received my box yesterday (8/17) and it was the July box with chocolate that expires August 30. When I complained that I received last month’s box and that the chocolate was nearly expired I was told that:

1. everyone will receive July’s box as their first box and that
2. “Chocolate does not expire like cheese or dairy, selling a small bar that is 2 weeks out and going to expire on a date doesn’t indicate it’s not sellable so I’m extremely surprised you are angry about that”.

I am still waiting for the $7 refund on my shipping charges.

Update: After being overcharged on July 30 and notifying them the same day, I finally received my refund in my bank account on August 19.

My chocolate, by the way, did in fact arrive intact. It was shipped Priority Mail and arrived within a day of being shipped. I live in NJ. I am disappointed to have received the July box with the soon to be expired chocolate. (even Bekki commented in her July review about this)

I wish them well but they need to 1. fix whatever causes people to be overcharged because that builds DISTRUST, 2. promptly respond and resolve issues, especially financial issues, and perhaps most controversially, 3. don’t include nearly expired chocolate. Only one bar had a date on it, and with the “who cares” attitude of the co-founder, God knows when the other unmarked chocolate expires.

Hi SG,

We fully refunded you back for your order and we do not sell expired chocolate. The bar you received was received 3 weeks before expiration in the Nano. Our nano subscription is the only product not personalized and we start out on the first nano box with a mix of Menakao, Dolfin, Ethereal, Seattle Chocolates and TCHO. We then go into the second box which is shown above.

We pride ourselves on protecting our chocolate from heat and our customer service. If you have any questions or concerns on any of our product feel free to contact me. I can show proof that the customer above was refunded back and not miss treated at all.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am a little confused. I thought the shipping was included in the $10 per month. I was tempted to get this box but not after reading this. Anyone who says chocolate doesn’t expire doesn’t know enough about chocolate to be selling it. I have eaten plenty of stale chocolate though the years and it is horrible. It may not self destruct at midnight on the date on the package but it definitely doesn’t improve with age. Selling a bar with 2 weeks out from its date isn’t horrible but their reaction sure was.

Hi Helen,

In the summer time we charge a surcharge for extra freight, coolers and ice packs. It becomes expensive to ship when the temperature is above 70 degrees F. In OCT we transition to free freight across the board except for the South which we move to free freight in NOV.

The cost to ship is more than double in the summer so we have to pass the costs on to our customers in the spring and summer time as well as part of the fall when the temperatures are still high.

We do not sell expired chocolate and I’m sorry to hear someone degrading our brand and company on this article. We work extremely hard to make our customers happy.

Have a lovely day,
Kamran Amir Ali
