BLUUM BOX AUGUST 2016 - BOX

Bluum
3.1 overall rating
24 Ratings | 12 Reviews

Bluum is a monthly subscription box for babies and toddlers. Their boxes are very customized – specific to the month of your child’s age. Also, they recently began allowing you to “build your own Bluum,” meaning you can even pick what products you’ll receive out of a very wide selection of items (one of my very favorite parts of this subscription!). However, subscribers can still skip choosing their items in order to still be surprised each month.

BLUUM BOX AUGUST 2016 - packaging

The box I’m reviewing is customized from my preferences and choices for my son, who was born this past September! Because of this, my box may look completely different than someone else’s box.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

BLUUM BOX AUGUST 2016 - info

Bluum doesn’t send item description cards in the boxes, they email you the information about the items.

My baby’s a year?! How did this happen?

BLUUM BOX AUGUST 2016 - items 1

Everyone Baby Lotion, Calming Chamomile + Lavender – 8 oz, value: $6.99

This lotion is made with mild, hypoallergenic products. The scent is light, and I love the combination of chamomile and lavender. This lotion also absorbs really well too.

Dr. Brown's Soft Spout Transition Cup – value: $5.99

I’ve received one of these cups in a different subscription box before, but it’s one of my favorites/most used so I was fine picking it for my Bluum box this month. It has a soft spout but is just like a sippy cup otherwise, and it has nice little handles on the sides for baby to use. I’m definitely happy having an extra.

BLUUM BOX AUGUST 2016 - items 3

Melissa & Doug Peek-a-Boo House – value: $9.99 (on Amazon for $4.79)

This is such a cute little house toy! The windows and door are attached with an elastic and you can flip them open and closed to show members of a bear family. My only complaint is that the elastic is very stiff (at least new – maybe this will change as it gets broken in) so it’s kind of hard to manipulate the windows/door, and either my baby or I have to hold the main piece of the house in order to flip one of the pieces. Otherwise you just push the toy away.

Melissa & Dough My First Sidewalk Chalk Set – value: $4.99

I love the idea of having these easy-to-grip handles on chalk! Really playing with chalk is still a little advanced for my kid but I think he could have fun seeing these make funny marks on the pavement before summer’s over!

And here’s some baby spam of my son checking out the little wood house!

Verdict: I’m okay with my Bluum box this month. FYI - I always pick my own products for my Bluum Boxes, rather than the option to be surprised, just because I really like having the control over what I get. I don’t think I was blown away by any of the products but I think they’re all fun or practical. The value adds up to just over $22, which really isn’t great for a $34 box… I did pick the items so a lot of that is on me, but honestly, the products can be slim-pickings so often. The way I seem to have to pick my items lately is stalking the product selection options around the beginning of the months and pouncing when I see something I think I’ll really like. I didn’t always have to do it like that – there used to be much better choices all the time. I’m hoping they’re going to get their selection back up to par and it’s just been a few off months… The way things have been lately it’s just a lot of effort for subscribers (which we shouldn’t have to do) to try and find products they’ll like to get in their boxes. I really hope I see some improvement next month for inventory from Bluum.

What do you think about Bluum? What items did you pick this month, or were you surprised?

Bluum must be going out of business and their just not telling us. When I tried to choose items for October there was almost nothing to choose from. Several categories were completely empty and the book category only had one item, a bookmark. The toy category only had super cheap items like glitter glue and stickers. How hard can it be to keep books in inventory? I had to email them because I can’t put together a box with the items available. I pay full price and there is no way I’m getting anywhere close to the 34 dollars I’m spending a month.

I really enjoyed Bluum at one time. They extended my sub by a month when my mail was stolen. But the last few months have been total misses. And last month, the highest value and only one we were really excited to receive was out of stock. They replaced it with a very low value book. This month I see selection only available in 2 categories, none of it worth even the time logging in never mind paying for. I want a refund.

I was really dissatisfied with the selection the past 2 months as well. We only had 2 books and 3 toys( 1 of which we received already) to choose from. Most of the toys were things like stickers that my 25 month old is really not interested in. I don’t want to keep filling in with plates and storage bags because that’s not really exciting for him either.

I wonder if choices get worse the longer you are subbed. I tried this for my four year old for 4 months and each month was more lame than the one before. And the “girl” products were all girly pink stuff my pink hating girl, well, hated. I dislike companies that promote such a pretty pink princess only image for girls- and the converse is true for my son!

By the way, my nine year old has the same pajamas!

I also had this box for quite some time but realized that as my son got older I had less and less choice every month. In fact I never received clothing for him which would have been nice once an while. We did get some really great and unique items but overall the value just wasn’t there. I was mostly getting him toys, cleaning supplies for me or food storage items. I can do that at Target with a much bigger range of options and some just as unique as what Bluum could offer and probably cheaper.

When my Bluum box arrived this month, the bubble bath and spilled and ruined two of my four items. Customer service was very nice and added two extra products to my next box, but I’m only being given like 4 options right now and 2 of them are way to advanced for my 4 month old! I’m just a little confused… Not sure if I’ll continue receiving this box.

This happened to me too and I thought it was so nice that they would “replace” the items but when I received the 2 “extra” products the next month they would only let me add 2 small/low priced items (a sippy cup and food pouch). It was like there was a price cap on the box and so I could add 2 extra things but it was stuff under $5 when the stuff that was messed up in the prior box was worth more than that! Hopefully you have a different experience but just FYI in case you wonder if you are losing your mind. Nope, they are just super frustrating.

Bluum has really jerked me around. They don’t tend to honor their advertised coupons. I don’t know how many times I have logged into my account and it shows me paying the full price($34) for a discounted subscription I signed up for($29). It’s really irritating. Then this last month I couldn’t access my bluum choice on the 8th(the day to start picking your items for the next month)! I contacted them but wasn’t able to access it until about 4 days later. Needless to say the options had all been picked over! I was furious! They basically told me…too bad. You have to choose from what’s available. Then one day later I get an email to resubmit my next month’s choices because something’s out of stock!
Jeez guys get it together already!

Sigh. I miss Citrus Lane.

We had a similar peekaboo panda and it never loosened up really, always have to hold it pretty tightly with the other hand for it to work. That made a great idea just kind of okay.

August was a great Bluum box for me, first time in like 3 months I actually got all the items I picked!! I got screwed over in July I got none of my selections and they sent crappy replacements that barely added up to $20. I complained and they extended my sub another month. But by the time I got to pick my September selections, everything was already gone. This box is in no way worth $34 ever!!! I’d never pay $20 for it. I have a groupon for it and this was my last month, but now I get Septembers box too. I hate the way you can “pick” your products and then almost never get everything you picked. Out of 6 months I think 2 or 3 times I actually got everything I picked. Then they send cheap replacements. I agree with Pam, you could take your $34 and get better baby stuff elsewhere for less money.

I feel bad that you also got a not so great box this month but I’m happy to know that it is not just me! For last few months I’ve been a little frustrated because I could have just bought the stuff off amazon myself for less money and avoided the hassle of trying to pick and see if I could get decent stuff. It makes me crazy when they then “replace” that stuff with even cheaper junk that I don’t even want 🙁 I think now that they have less competition they are just trying to cash in but I don’t see why any of their customers would stick around unless they are like me and just got it as a gift. I definitely tell my friends now to avoid it for themselves and for gifts.
