Blockhead Box is a new subscription box from Fight4Them, which is an organization of dog lovers and combat athletes working to prevent dog fighting and animal cruelty. Expect chews, toys, and treats for your dog as well as clothing and other gear for dog owners. And feel good knowing that a portion of all proceeds to charities, rescues, and humane law enforcement! Toys and chews are designed especially for bully breeds and heavy chewers.

My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler, so according to some lists (and insurance companies), she is a bully breed. When I lived in my condo, her best friends were bully breeds. And there have been lots of bully breeds in my family in the past including boxers, English bulldogs, and a Bull Mastiff, so this box was definitely of interest to me both in terms of products and the causes it supports.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The box came with this information card and another card with more information on Blockhead Box’s charity efforts.

Hoof Chew – Value $1 (?)

Nyx hasn’t had one of these before. I am assuming it is from a cow and Nyx has done OK with beef (though hooves are mostly keratin). So we will see.

Etta Says Deluxe Turkey Bully (7 inch) – Value $2.99

These contain “bully fines” which I assume means leftover bits from processing bully sticks (sounds kind of gross, but dogs like really gross things…). These do also contain turkey meal as well as some “binder” type ingredients (e.g., potato starch). But, they’re grain free and made in the USA. Unfortunately, Nyx can’t have turkey so this will be passed on to another dog to enjoy.

Etta Says Crunchy Deer Chew (7 inch) – Value $1.99

We are familiar with these from BarkBox (where they are often a little “extra”). This brand is made in the USA and this product is made from rawhide (processed in a way that is safer) and deer meat.

KONG Ballistic Ring (large) – Value $11.99

This was a pretty tough toy (plus no stuffing) and Nyx liked it a lot. Apparently these float, but Nyx doesn’t like water so we couldn’t test that aspect. The funniest thing was how she had trouble picking it up because she was going after it from the middle, while her front paw was holding the edge down.

Blockhead Box Magnet – Value $3 (?)

This is a pretty new box and I think they are still trying to get the word out, so I don’t mind a few promotional items like this. Especially since they donate some of their profits to anti-dogfighting organizations!

blockheadbox-august-2016-treats

Exclusively Dog Jerkeez BBQ Chicken Flavor Chewy Dog Treats (7 oz) – Value $4.59

I’ve been seeing this brand in subscription boxes a lot lately. But they seem to have good quality ingredients (no added sugars; no wheat, corn or soy; etc.). They are also sourced and made in the USA, which is great.

DachsBarkery Homemade Dog Treats Bone-Ana Biscuits (5 oz) – Value $8 (?)

This is a small company that has a Facebook page but doesn’t seem to have a website, so I estimated the value of this based on similar banana-containing treats from Etsy. I like seeing little companies like this show up in subscription boxes; I learn about all kinds of products I never would have known about otherwise!

Nyx enjoyed the KONG ring. It was pretty strong; the weak spot she latched on to was actually around the embroidered label.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $33.56 for the August Blockhead Box. That is pretty close to the cost of the box, but I could be underestimating by some because I couldn’t find a few of the items for sale online, and a few of the prices quoted are Chewy.com sale prices. You can always do a longer-term subscription and/or use the FIRSTBOX20 coupon to come out a bit ahead. I am actually pretty happy with this box. I liked the number and variety of items and I do feel like they were selected with tough chewers in mind.

Stink warning: If that hoof is anything like the ones I’ve gotten my pup, I suggest keeping it outside. The smell is horrible even when it isn’t being chewed. Add slobber and it’s horrifying. It’s even better when you find this out after leaving it out all day while you’re at work, then walking in to a house that smells like farm waste. You know how the smell of bacon or fish lingers for what seems like days? Same deal.

Ah, no, I haven’t eaten meat since 1993 so I don’t know that smell. I haven’t given Nyx the hoof yet. But I will keep that in mind.
