One side of the card reveals this month’s theme, “Beauteque’s Beautiful Blend.” I find the themes kind of iffy in terms of curation, but I also really don’t care about the themes. Please note: this is a review of the July package. This normally ships late in the month for me.
The other side of the card gives a little more information about the masks, including directions if they are unusual.
Scinic My Juicy Bottle Mask Soothing Ampoule Juice – Value $2
I am pretty sure I’ve used this mask before – if not this exact one, something from the same product line. But, this one is especially well-suited for my skin. It has aloe extract, which I find moisturizing (and which would also be excellent to use after a day in the sun, if you are into that). Further, it has tea tree oil, which is definitely very good for acne (but it doesn’t have that tea tree oil smell that some people don’t like). This is supposed to control sebum production and I would say that it did a good job at that for me, since I used it in the morning before makeup and did not need blotting papers that day!
Scinic Intensive Dual Mask Soothing Solution – Value $2.99
This is an interesting mask. It actually comes in two parts, one for the top half of the face and one for the bottom half of the face. The part that goes on bottom really wraps around to cover a good portion of the underside of the chin, which I like a lot. This has similar ingredients to the mask above (including tea tree oil and aloe), but it also has tea leaf extract which should have anti-aging benefits as well, since tea is known for its antioxidant content.
Missha Pure Source Cell Mask (green tea) – Value $4.90
Unfortunately I am not finding many English sources for this, but it is my understanding from scanning blogs that these masks often have sodium hyaluronate or hyaluronic acid, which is a carbohydrate polymer that holds on to a lot of water. This can have a moisturizing effect as well as do a little plumping and *might* lead to a lessened appearance of fine lines. Also, of course, green tea has a lot of antioxidants that will help fight free radical damage. I found this to be pleasant and hydrating. It did not have a strong fragrance, either, which I appreciate.
The Face Shop Mascream Sheet (brightening) – Value $1.39
This is a little different from other sheet masks in that it has a cream as the “liquid” ingredient instead of a clear serum. This one is supposed to improve dull skin tone and contains argan oil and black pearl. Argan oil is high in vitamin E (an antioxidant) and fatty acids and is super moisturizing. Pearls have a long history in Asian skincare and contain polysaccharides (will be moisturizing), amino acids and proteins, and minerals. I kind of doubt the pearl is being taken in through the skin (unless the liquid ingredients are leaching out components of the powder), but this was definitely a moisturizing mask. (Too hard to tell with respect to other effects after only one use.)
Esfolio Honey Essence Mask Sheet – Value $1.99
Honey has antibacterial properties so it may be especially good for acne-prone skin. This also has purslane, which has high omega 3 fatty acids, minerals, and lots of antioxidants. And, it has Chaenomeles sinensis fruit extract, which may have some astringent properties. (This extract is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for rheumatoid arthritis, so it may also have some anti-inflammatory properties.) I can’t say for sure how much this did after only having used one mask, but the ingredients intrigue me enough that I would definitely consider buying more of this one.
Esfolio Green Tea Essence Mask Sheet – Value $1.90
This has a lot of the same ingredients as the mask above, but it also has tea leaf extract (lots of antioxidants) and ginseng extract, which also has some anti-inflammatory properties. Most of the work on ginseng has been carried out on people taking it orally, though, and that doesn’t necessarily translate to skincare. But, this is another mask I would consider buying more of.
Tsaio Chamomile Licorice Skin Soothing Mask – Value $1.29
This mask is supposed to be good for dry, itchy, and peeling skin. It contains chamomile, which I have definitely found to be soothing in the past. It also has licorice root extract, which has anti-inflammatory properties and may help with hyperpigmentation and dark spots (this also has niacinamide which is also good at reducing redness). And, there is aloe for moisture. I think this brand is my favorite discovery of the box and I’m glad we got to try multiple masks from them.
Tsaio Green Tea Whitening Mask – Value $1.29
This has a ton of antioxidants from green tea leaf as well as pomegranate and mulberry extracts and ginkgo extract, which is supposed to help improve blood flow and which may have antimicrobial effects. All the antioxidants will help fight free radical damage, which should be beneficial in terms of discoloration that occurs as a result of sun exposure (as an example) and which may also help reduce the formation of fine lines.
Tsaio Sweet Orange Moisturizing Mask - Value $1.29
This does have a scent but it is pretty mild and doesn’t last long. This has cucumber extract, which I find soothing, as well as sodium hyaluronate for moisture/plumping, and niacinamide. I really enjoyed this mask and found it moisturizing (though it did not interfere with subsequent application of makeup). This is another one I’d seek out (if I ever decrease the size of my stash enough to warrant buying new masks).
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $19.13 for the July 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven. That exceeds the cost of the subscription, just barely, and is an improvement in value over last month. I personally find this subscription fun and valuable, and I learn a lot while researching the various masks! Plus, I just like trying new sheet masks and nearly everything this month was new to me. I’m particularly excited about the Tsaio masks.
