The Products: Over $40 worth of stitching goodies including two cuts of stitching fabric and a variety of threads and embellishments. (Note: patterns and instructions are typically not included. However, the StitchyBox blog has some project ideas. And you can choose one larger piece of fabric instead of the two smaller ones when you sign up.)

Ships to: US for free, $6 international.

Good to Know: You can buy extras of supplies you liked from this box from the StitchyBox shop (while they last). I’ve taken most of the values listed below from the StitchyBox shop when I could.

This is a review of the “Big Picture Box.”

This month’s StitchyBox came with a card detailing the theme for the box. This box’s theme is “The Little Sunbather.” This month, there was also a free beach-themed pattern.

Preciosa 11/0 Egg Shell Pearl Seed Beads (1 strand) – Value $0.50

Toho 15/0 Purple Galvanized Matte Seed Beads (1 gram) – Value $0.50

These are nice little extras. I may end up using them for jewelry projects instead of stitching, but it’s all good!

Picture This Plus 28 Count Lugana in Chime – Value $5 (?)

Fabric Flair 16 Count Aida in Stone – Value $5 (?)

You always get two pieces of fabric with this subscription, one linen and one evenweave. I am more of a fan of stitching on Aida but I think that’s because I don't have as much experience on linen. Both of these are quite pretty and do remind me of summer and the beach.

From the Cauldron Hand-Dyed Velvet Fat 16th in Newt’s Eye – Value $5

I have never worked with velvet before. There are a lot of possibilities here. I actually think this would look nice (and potentially mid-20th-century retro) with some white flowers embroidered on it; I need to find some waste canvas and a good pattern now!

Ship’s Manor Cotton Floss in Clear Waters (5 yards) – Value $2

Stitchy Box did a really good job picking summer colors this month. Usually they are a few months ahead in terms of theme so you have time to complete a project, but I don’t mind getting seasonal colors – this is a very pretty blue.

Weeks Dye Works Cotton Floss in Daylily (5 yards) – Value $2.50

Weeks Dye Works is a StitchyBox mainstay. This is easy to work with and is a nice, bright, summery color.

Gloriana Bellagio Red (6 yards, 12 stranded silk) – Value $7.75

This is beautiful, and probably my favorite color this month, but I have decided that I am not a fan of working with silk. It is much harder to separate a few strands from silk to work with and I kept getting tangles (under conditions that would not cause tangles with cotton floss). Maybe my liking for Aida and cotton makes me less sophisticated as a stitcher, but it also makes me less frustrated…

Classic Colorworks Belle Soie in Carnation (5 yards, 12 stranded silk) – Value $7.50

This is another great summer color but I had similar issues stitching with this silk as I did with the Gloriana silk. Still, I’m glad I got the chance to try it.

The Gentle Art Limited Edition Floss in Variegated Sand and Blue – Value $2.40

The variegated color in this is fun. I’m not sure yet how I would use it in a project, but I do like the effect you get when the two colors meet.

stitchybox-june-2016-swatch

I made little squares with all the threads. From left to right: (1) Classic Colorworks Belle Soie in Carnation, (2) Gloriana Bellagio Red, (3) Weeks Dye Works Cotton Floss in Daylily, (4) The Gentle Art Limited Edition Floss in Variegated Sand and Blue, and (5) Ship’s Manor Cotton Floss in Clear Waters. All are stitched with 2 strands.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $38.15 for this month’s StitchyBox. That doesn’t *quite* match the promised $40 value, but it is close, and it is slightly higher than the price of the box. Since the box contains a lot of floss and fabric from smaller producers, I still consider it to be a good deal – if you were to order the items individually, you’d have to pay a lot for shipping. But with this subscription, you get to try out different threads and learn about indie thread dyers with a lot less risk. For example, although I think the silk threads are beautiful, I have learned that I just don’t like working with them very much.  And that is useful information to me.

Personally, I don’t think this sub would be worth it for me unless they included projects you can make with the stuff in the box. I’m just not creative enough on my own to see the stuff and have ideas come to me out of thin air. I really like the stuff individually, but can’t see how I’d use it, so it seems more random to me than what the curators may have intended.

About stitching with silks and tangling, I find that using shorter lengths helps somewhat.

Maybe next time you can give the actual measurements of those fabric in your review, length and width wise? I usually get fat quarter size for my projects, so fat 16th is won’t make it for me.

The silk thread do look very yummy, and those are high quality silk. When working with silk, keep it short, no longer than 18 inches and it won’t tangle or fuzz as much, and you be fine.

I think you are pretty far off on the cost of the fabric. I’m not sure on the size, but I usually buy from 123stitch, and the hand dyed fabric is quite a bit more. The smallest size of hand dyed from picture this plus is about $9, I think.

Hmm – or maybe not if it is a really tiny piece of fabric.

Those particular fabrics were not available in the Stitchy Box shop, so I based the price on other hand-dyed fabrics of the same size from the Stitchy Box shop. They are fairly small and there just really isn’t a good way to show scale for pieces of fabric.

Love this subscription, enjoy getting new threads and fabrics to try out. I also get the monthly threads subscription as well. Liz picks great quality fabrics, threads, and embellishments. She also just started two add on’s, she added designs and buttons to this subscription.

Too much money. Go to Michaels or Joann and pick out a kit you like, for less, and with their weekly coupon.
